San Francisco Cable cars

Will be in San Francisco for a few hours on a back to back cruise. (San Francisco is where folks will be disembarking and embarking) How far form the port are the cable cars? Anything of interest close to the port?

Loved the cable cars.... some thoughts....

• check out the fare.... after a couple of rides... you might want to get a day pass
  
• the day pass is also good for the buses
  
• they can be extremely popular.... I remember waiting 90 minutes to board at Fisherman's Wharf.

The port will put you near Pier 39 as well as Fisherman's wharf. Both are touristy but fun for a visit. Probably the number one attraction among cruise day visitors is the tour to Alcatraz. Well worth the visit. While you might consider it to now be a tourist attraction, remember it was built to be a prison and has a long and storied past. Good visit for both kids and adults. Look for tickets in advance. If you do take the cable car look for the Powell and Hyde as it is the better ride IMO. Otherwise San Francisco is actually a very small city in area and many other spots, Chinatown, union square, the ferry market are easily done from the port on foot, by transit or cab/Uber in a day visit depending on your level of mobility.

Sounds like he might also like the cable car museum. Actually shows how the system operates and is free. It is at 1201 Mason. Not a long stop but something different that you do not get elsewhere.

Do you ask for a day pass when you get on the cable car?

When you get on the cable car... someone will come to you for money.... At this time you have a choice for a single fare or daypass.

The cable cars that are near Fisherman's Wharf both end up at Powell and Market in downtown SF. If you want to return to the Wharf via cable car be aware there are LONG lines at the Powell and Market turn around. Waits up to an hour and a half are not uncommon. If you get in line mid-afternoon on your way back to the ship you could easily miss the boarding time.

Taxis are usually in front of the St. Francis Hotel, 3 short blocks from the cable car turn around.

The cost of a single ride cable car ticket is $7.00. So round trip is $14.00 .A one day visitor pass is $21.00

You can pay cash- small bills on-board to the conductor. the one day is pass is good on all Muni buses, but the pass doesn't apply to BART.

so from the cruise port dock, turn right (west) and walk past Pier 39, Fisherman's wharf to Ghiradelli Square. These are all tourist things worth seeing. Eat some crab and sourdough bread at Fisherman's wharf. You can catch the Powell-Hyde car at Ghirardelli and ride that to market and Powell street. The cable car passes Union Square, if you are interested in seeing that and then walk down to Market street. If you don't want to return on the cable car, use your day pass to board the F trolley line on market street and take it North towards the Ferry Building. it will turn left on the Embarcadero and go past the cruise port, where you can get off, if you want or head back to Fisherman's wharf.

There is lots to do and see near the cruise port. And the views are magnificent!

The ride is lovely past Grace Cathedral and the grand buildings atop Nob Hill. You can walk, about 20 minutes, from the cruise ship terminal to the end of the line at the Hyatt. And while you are around the Hyatt, visit the terrific market at the Ferry Building and enjoy the views of the Bay and the Bay Bridge. I'm around this area on a regular basis and never get tired of it.
