Hotel recommendation in Puerto Iguazu

We would like to stay two nights in Puerto Iguazu rather than at the Sheraton (which is too expensive). Any recommendations for a mid-range hotel within easy walking to restaurants? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Depends on how you define "easy walking". We're staying at the Grand Crucero which is about a 10 minute walk from downtown. That's an okay distance to me. Highly rated on Trip Advisor and really reasonable rates for the dates we're staying. Much less than other properties (1/6th the rate I saw for the Sheraton). Bus stop right out front for a bus to Iguazu Falls. I don't know if there are other bus routes heading downtown that stop there as well, but that would avoid the walk if 10 minutes is too long for you.

We stayed at Jardin de Iguazu in early Feb.

We were very pleased. Central location, about three blocks from the bus station where you catch the bus to the falls. Five minute walk. Restaurants are in the same general area.

As an aside....we did an independent tour. We booked air directly with Aerolineas by calling their call center in Buenos Aires a month or so before leaving Canada. By doing this we saved about $100 each on our return fare.

The NA Aerolineas 1800 folks gave us the details on how to do this. It was a snap. I used my long distance calling card..it used up 50 cents of airtime. No language issue whatsoever. If you get on the Aerolineas Argentina site (English option) you will see the the prices vary by date and by time of day. The only hitch was the maximum value that the call center can process on a foreign credit card is 5000 peso. Our agent simply put through a seperate transaction for each of us.

Highly recommend this trip and there is absolutely no need for an escorted tour.

Two years ago we stayed in La Aldea de la Selva, walkable from downtown, maybe 20-25 minutes (we did the walk several times) but a nice restaurant (and swimming pool) on site. I don't know the cost, it was part of a package our tour company put together, but we had asked for "mid-range" for lodging. Bus stop to downtown and to the falls nearby. Taxis readily available. Very satisfied.

The rooms are isolated cabins in the rainforest, reachable via a boardwalk through the dense foliage. [Not really isolated, they are built in clusters of four, but they felt isolated.) Comfortable!

Updating my post. After staying there, I would not recommend the Grand Crucero. While we didn't try the "10 minute walk", it sure looks much longer than that, and it's not a particularly nice route to walk along a busy road. The hotel itself was just okay. Service is first-rate, but I wasn't a fan of the breakfast buffet (tons of items, but very few things a picky eater like myself would like). We also tried dinner there after our arriving flight got in late, and the dinner buffet wasn't good at all. Maybe it's the norm for Iguazu hotels, but I felt like I was in a two star motel at the beach.
