Stockholm 2016 information and advise

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am looking for a mid-range restaurant, either in Gamla Stan or close to T-Centralen, so we cna have a pre-boarding cruise dinner for members of our roll call.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

What is midrange for you? As leavesofapple asks, how many is there in your group?

There is a small place in the Old Town called Under Kastanjen which have good reputation on review sites.

Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Under+Kastanjen/@59.3247774,18.073028,3a,90y,237.4h,93.44t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sFFisMOLeVkRoMP3oRYFj-A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x465f77e296b25d85:0xa477119c8df3a385!8m2!3d59.3247534!4d18.0729622!6m1!1e1

In general, the restaurants in Old Town are quite expensive.

Another one who seems nice is Restaurang Knut in Vasastan, it's about 10-15 min walk from T-centralen.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/59.3307914,18.0593022/Knut+Restaurang+%26+Bar,+Upplandsgatan+17,+112+25+Stockholm,+Sverige/@59.3302256,18.0593985,16.16z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d621a19d7a7:0x1dadf3fda4ab3e8d!2m2!1d18.0528151!2d59.3381653!3e2

http://restaurangknut.se/en

Slightly cheaper then Under Kastanjen though.

Our cruise ship will dock at Frihamnen Saturday and Sunday (June 25 and 26).

Should we be concerned of getting stuck in traffic because we plan to take Bus 76 (or Bus 1) from there to town?

How long the construction at Slussen would last?

If your ship docks at Frihamnen, the construction work at slussen shouldn't affect you that much. Slussen is between Old Town and Södermalm,

while Frihamnen is on he eastern outskirts of the central city.

On Tuesday next week, May 17th, there are some temporary changes to some of the bus routes in central Stockholm

due a march that are going to take place as a part the celebrations of Norway's national day.

The march will start at Nybroplan at 15.00 and will walk this route:

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Nybroplan,+Stockholm,+Sverige/59.3242267,18.1010778/@59.3305157,18.0806754,15.25z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m5!1m1!1s0x465f9d5bca7ae5a5:0x8f1eb9b2c1ac767b!2m2!1d18.0762415!2d59.332918!1m0!3e2

This means that these roads will be closed between 14.00 and 19.30 and buses/taxis will have to use alternate routes which means that some stops will not be stopped at by buses.

So buses ( #69 #76 will not stop at Djurgårdsbron, Styrmansgatan and Nybroplan. 14.00 and 19.30.

For quick transport from Vasa/Djurgårdent to the Old Town area, use Djurgårdsfärjan.

See this link (info is available in Swedish only) for a complete list of affected bus routes and bus stops: http://sl.se/sv/info/nyheter/syttende-mai/

We are arriving on the Serenade of the Seas on Tues. May 31 at the Frihamnen cruise terminal. Our hours in port are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

What are the options to get from Frihamnen (we're in berth 634) to Vasa? I see on Vasa's website that the summer hours (opening at 8:30 am) don't start until June 1, so I guess we'll plan to be there at 10:00 am when it opens on May 31. Is there a harbor ferry option from Frihamnen?

From Vasa to Gamla Stan, on your Cruise Stockholm Google drive map, it looks like the harbor ferry is an option, but where do we get on and off?

At the end of our day, how much time should we allow to get back to the ship, if we're coming from Gamla Stan?

Thanks!!

From Frihamnen to Vasa.

There is a harbour ferry (called Sjövägen) however it won't get you to Vasa until well past 10 meaning that there will likely be long queues already.

So use bus #76 (it runs every 10 min) towards Norra Hammarbyhamnen and get off at Djurgårdsbron, from there go across the bridge and follow the signs to Vasa.

http://sl.se/#/Travel/SearchTravelById/Frihamnen%20%28Stockholm%29/Djurg%C3%A5rdsbron%20%28Stockholm%29/1170/1100/2016-05-31%252009_00/depart/sv/null/null/2,8,1,4,96,/null/null/null/null/null/false/null/0/0/null/false

Djugårdsfärjan departs from Allmänn gränd. http://kartor.eniro.se/m/tMhsw

It will drop you off at Skeppsbron, walk northwards (water on your right side) to get to the Royal Palace.

bus #76 will get you back from (east side of) Old Town to Frihamnen it will take 20-30 minutes or so depending on traffic and etc.

You can also walk to Nybroplan and ho with Sjövägen from there but this will take much longer time.

About 20 min walking from southern old town to Nybroplan and another 50 minutes with Sjövägen to Frihamnen.

Just be aware about the ticket system for the buses and Sjövägen (read first post).

Hello,

We will be in Stockholm June 12th and would like to take the kayak tour that is offered by Stockholm Adventures. I'm concerned that it might be still a bit early in the season to go out in a kayak. What do you think?

Also, the Regal Princess will be at the Nynashamm port which means that we will need to allow travel time to and from Stockholm. This makes booking tours a bit more difficult since I don't know what train we will be on. The plan is to take the 7:49 train but that all depends on when we can get off the ship. I'm getting anxious just thinking about our day in Stockholm so if anyone has any suggestions to help me out I would appreciate them.

Thanks!!

I don't know to be honest. Currently the water temperature is around +10C so it should hopefully be another couple of degrees warmer in a month for now.

Weather wise, you never know, could be anything. The first full week in may was very hot with >+25C temps then the past weekend the temp dropped to around +7-8C.

One advice regarding the train, use the official SL ticket app to buy tickets to the commuter train, this way you don't have to wait in line at the ticket machine at the station.

Hi there,

We are taking a city tour in Stockholm that will include time in the old town district-Gamla Stan. I am wondering how much time one could spend there, is it very small or quite extensive? If we decide to break from the tour there to spend more time shopping would it be expensive to taxi back to the port, Stadsgarden? Are there any must try foods or unique souvenirs to watch for?

Thanks so much!

You could easily spend many many hours in Gamla Stan.

Taxi cost depends on where ship will dock, from Kornhamnstorg to Frihamnen about 3000SEK (~$36) if you would take the trip today at a quarter to 4 pm.

If your ship docks at Stadsgårdskajen, the price would be slightly cheaper since it is closer.

For Stadsgården you could also walk if you have the time/energy to do so, it is about 2.5KM and would take about 30min (+extra time for stopping and enjoying the view):

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/59.3228037,18.0710437/59.3196388,18.0727535/59.3188878,18.0762995/59.317765,18.0822744/59.3171419,18.0893405/59.3154606,18.0938227/59.3155808,18.09541/59.3144075,18.0987562/59.3160625,18.1021831/@59.3189321,18.0810572,1172m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!4m1!3e2

Souvenirs, try Dalhäst One place to find them is at: http://www.woodenhorsemuseumsweden.se/ which is located at Stortorget in Gamla Stan.

The souvernir/tourist shops along Västerlånggatan probably sells them as well but I think those likely are imported and not real.

All kinds of moose souvenirs are very "popular" (more like an obsession) among Germans and German tourists.

It´s very extensive. Lots of shops, cafes and restaurants. And the Royal Castle is situated at one end. There are several mueseum in the castle and just the castle alone could take hours.

Many tourists want to see the state apartements, but I would recommend the Treasury and "Museum Tre Kronor" where you can view the oldest remaining parts of the castle, after entering through a 5 m thick defensive wall.

In Gamla Stan don´t just walk along most popular street, Västerlånggatan. It also has the most tourists. Österlånggatan has more interesting shops and is quieter and feels more genuine.

Our plans for the day are pretty similar. We arrive on the Celebrity Silhouette at 9am at Frihamnen -638. We too would like to do Vasa first followed by Abba Museum. From what you have written I understand how to get to Vasa and then it seems that we can walk to the Abba Museum, is that correct? The next stop will be the Royal Palace - is there a changing of the guards ceremony everyday? what time? Should we plan on the Abba Museum later in the day in order to get to the palace in time for the ceremony? Or is the logistics too confusing to do that? We also want walking around time in the Old City. How would you get us organized?

Thanks for your advice!

Yes Abba museums is 5-10 min walk from Vasa museumhttp://kartor.eniro.se/m/B4i73

Changing of the guards take place every day in the outer courtyard at the Royal Palace in the Old Town.

Time is 12.15 for all days except red days at which the changing takes place at 13.15

on May 27th (Friday next week) it will start earlier due to the christening of Prince Oskar. It will then start one hour later (13.15).

The same will likely be for the day when Prince Alexander will be christened (no date announced yet).

Changing of the guards ceremony are also cancelled on July 1st - July 3rd due to some Triathlon event.

http://www.forsvarsmakten.se/siteassets/2-var-verksamhet/hogvakten/vaktparad-med-musik-maj-december.pdf

Normally you would save time by doing Vasa and Abba "together" but you are correct that you probably won't have time to do Abba before changing of the guards.

So what you could do is to start with Vasa then head over to the Palace to watch the changing of the guards, then do Old Town and then finish

the day by doing Abba on the way back to the ship (if you have enough time remaining) since Abba is more or less on the way back to the ship.

From Vasa to Old Town, bus or ferry shouldn't matter but from Old Town to Abba, I would choose Djugårdsfärjan since it's berth on Djurgården is very close to Abba

Thanks again for all of the information.

In your post above you mentioned that the changing of the guards ceremony will be cancelled from July 1 - 3 due to a triathlon event. We are going to be in Stockholm on July 2 and I wanted to know how the triathlon will affect our visit. Our plan is to take the ferry from S167 to Vasa, followed by the bus to the Royal Palace (would like to tour the palace) and then a walking tour of old town. We are then planning on walking back to the pier or talking the number 53 bus back to the pier if we are tired. We are going to be in port from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Ok, I did not know about the event until I read about it in the Högvakten schedule.

Anyway here is the track: http://wts-assets.triathlon.org/stockholm/VWTS_Motion_2016_SWE_v2.png

This will probably affect the buses that passes Gamla Stan (including the Royal Palace) and the City hall but there is not any information available on the SL website but I will try to find out.

To be on the safe side, expect disturbances for buses #76 and #53. If you want to be on the safe side, you can go with Djurgårdsfärjan from Allmänna gränd to Skeppsbron/Gamla Stan.

As for #53 you should in anyway be able to find it at Slussen bus terminal (see maps in first post). Just make sure you hop on the one that goes in the right direction (Henriksdal or Finnberget).

For those who intends to use the official SL ticket app, make sure you have the latest version since earlier versions will stop functioning on May 31st.

The latest version is called "SL-Reseplanerare och biljetter"

It's version number is 3.0 and it was updated at May 11th for the Android version.

it's version number is 3.0.1 and it was updated at May 16th for the Ios version.

For those of you who are on a Baltic cruise but already have been to Stockholm, seen Vasa, the old town, the Royal palace, drottningholm, Södermalm, and etc.

If you want something else to do/see, perhaps a trip to Mariefred could be tempting on a nice summer day?

It is a small "summer town", with plenty of small wooden houses in the central area and it is located about 50km west of Stockholm.

Here are some pics of mainly the castle, named Gripsholm, and the Harbour area (with the church in the background).

Some the pics are standard links due the the limit of 6 images per post.

First off, thank you for all you do! Its very helpful to read this thread when planning a trip to Stockholm (versus trying to read 25 different threads!!!). I will apologize now for any of my questions you’ve already answered :). I have read through the entire thread and tried to figure everything out. But I still have a few things I’d really appreciate your confirmation on – and a couple things I couldn’t track down. I realize you may not be able to answer all of these questions, but any you can would be great!

We are arriving on HAL msZuiderdam on Aug 4. The port says “BOJ1 FÖRTÖJNING PÅ STRÖMMEN”. Our plan is to go over to Vasa Museum first. Then we will come back and probably spend the rest of the day at the Palace and Gamla Stan.

From what I’ve read here, it appears we will tender in to the southeastern part of Gamla Stan and the Djurgårdsfärjan would be our best option to get over to the Vasa Museum.

Questions

1 – Am I interpreting the port info/tendering location correctly? And that the Djurgårdsfärjan is our best option?

2 – Assuming the Djurgårdsfärjan is our best option, is there a specific “company name” or sign we should be looking for when we get off our tender to be sure we have the correct ferry?

3 – I’m trying to find the cost of a round-trip ferry ticket….but am struggling with the website. Do you know what a round-trip ferry ticket would cost in SEK?

4 – If we bought that paper 24hr SL card (115SEK) instead, would that cover this particular ferry? I thought I saw it did, but want to be sure, as I'm trying to determine which makes more sense (a round-trip ferry ticket or a 24hr SL card).

5 – Because we have chip and signature cards (ugh) – not “true chip and PIN cards” – we might have trouble at unmanned machines. Do you know where the closest manned place would be to buy the round-trip ferry ticket? Is there a manned ticket booth at the dock? If it is "pay on the boat, do we need cash?

6 - Do you know the closest place to buy the 24hr ticket from where we tender in? I located what appeared to be something on Slussplan….but am not sure if it is manned or unmanned.

7 - Would it be better to just go to an ATM and get cash? Any idea if there is an ATM where we tender in? I'm guessing it's not really a "cruise terminal" where we get dropped off....?

Again, thank you so much for what you do!

1. Yes it is at the south eastern part of Gamla Stan, the exact location might have moved about 100m north due to construction works at Slussen, but I am not sure.

Yes I would say that the ferries are your. There are buses as well but they doesn't have the same capacity.

The ferries can accommodate 300 passengers while the bus' capacity might be slightly less then 100 passengers.

2. Yes. The ferries looks like this (number on side is 8, 9, 10 or 11 but those are just the individual ferry name and all goes on the same route):

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Djurg%C3%A5rden_11_2012.jpg

The signs looks like this (scroll down to the image with the circular Djurgårdsfärjan sign): http://blogg.flygstolen.se/blog/2011/08/08/med-bat-till-djurgarden/

3. As far as I know there are no round trip tickets so you have to buy two single ticket.

A single ticket cost 36SEK if you buy it in a ticket machine and 50SEK if you buy it from a manned booth.

4. Yes it does. These ferries are now part of SL's public transport network so all SL tickets/travel cards are valid on these ferries.

However I am not sure where they sell travel cards in that part of Stockholm so a single ticket will probably be easier.

5. Yes at both Skeppsbron/Slussen and at Allmänna gränd, you can choose to buy ticket at manned booth or from a ticket machine.

6. Not sure, seems to be at a Tobacco/gambling store at Slussplan 1-3.

Directions between store and Djurgårdsfärjan berth.

I sent an email to SL and asked them but they only answered that information about changes due to the triathlon event will be announced "later" (no mention of when "later" is).

Pretty poor behaviour if you ask, they obviously know that there will be changes and probably also already know what the changes will be

so why not just publish them then?

I found a website that shows the triathlon course. It looks like there will be races on both July 2 and July 3 and there will be a lot of racing activity in Gamla Stan.

Here's the link: http://stockholm.triathlon.org/en/elite/course/

Thanks for all your input. And I'm a very visual person, so the links with pics were MUCH appreciated!

Thank you for your useful advice. We visit Stockholm on June 9th and will probably be tendered to Gama Stan. I notice the ferry tickets are priced at 36sek single if purchased from the ticket machine or 50sek from a manned booth. Can I pay by card from the machine and/or if I put a 100sek note into the ticket machine will I get change?Roughly how long is the journey across and how frequent are the boats?

The machines accept credit cards but I don't know if the also require the cards to be chip and pin,

I do not think the machines accepts cash but I can't give you a definitive answer on either of those questions.

Journey is about 10 minutes and it departs every 15 minutes most of the day.

http://sl.se/ficktid/vinter/V82.pdf Time tables can also be found by going to http://sl.se/sv/reseinfo/ and type 82 in the search box and click sök.

Your ship. the EMERALD PRINCESS, will moore at the buoy in Strömmen and then tender into Skeppsbron/Gamla Stan.
