Weather for the Norwegian Fjords cruise May 28th to June 9th 2016

Just a little bit of fun for anyone who’s interested. For many years I have used the internet to keep records of weather all over the World and as we are going on P&O’s ‘Arcadia’ the end of the month I have selected a number of locations around the Fjords to give some idea what the weathers like as the days run up to the cruise and will try to update each day.

It would be guesswork to say what the weather is going to be like for the 12 day cruise, but weather models have been indicating high pressure in the Scandinavian region later this May, which if comes off, will be good for some dry and warm weather, I’m keeping everything crossed. :confused:

We have booked quite a number of excursions, some of the outside active ones, while we can still do that, and clothing wise are preparing for ALL weather types. Also worth bearing in mind is change of temperature with altitude. As a rule the temperature drops about 6c for every 1000ft, so if on the day you were going up the Trollstigen, the Norwegian County Road 63 that connects the town of Åndalsnes in Rauma and the village of Valldal in Norddal Municipality, which has a highest point of 2,300ft, the temperature maybe 20c in the Fjords, yet only 8c at the top of the road.

I've added another location to the list, Mt Mannen, two reasons, first this is a higher altitude location, so you can see how much colder it is up in the mountains and secondly it is situated in the next valley near to Trollvegen and the troll wall.

The medium range model forecast charts are still indicating high pressure over Scandinavia, currently they run upto 1st June 2016. A day or two before departure I will try to give a better idea of what weather we can expect with more confidence, especially for the first week.:)

One thing worth mentioning Mt. Mennen (1294m, 4245ft) weather station also reporting 58cm of snow on the ground, thats over half a metre or 2 feet in old money.

In 2 weeks time it is possible for the sun to be out for 21.2 hours a day , wereas Tronheim it won't set :eek:

Models still showing high pressure over Scandinavia from 28th May to 2nd June, as far as they run atm. Some are promising some very warm weather. I shall pack sun screen, shorts and T-shirts if this continues.

Mt Mannen reporting 163cm (1.63 metres deep)of snow today, so a lot must have fallen this week at high altitude. No worries about waterfalls for us :) Just hope the road is open :eek:

Although some wobbles on the models (weather speak ;)), high pressure still showing up for our first week in the Fjords, not wall to wall sunshine, but good news.

For the week 28th May to 3rd June high pressure looks pretty certain over Scandinavia with a general easterly airflow over the mountains, opposite to the normal conditions. I looked back at previous years that had this type of pattern the end of May/early June and found many of the locations above reported temperatures in the range of 20°C (68f) and as high as 27°C (81f). Much depends on the origin of the air, but my current thoughts are to expect a lot of dry weather with temperatures somewhere around 23 to 25°C (73 to 77f).

Some hints of a cooler northerly beyond the 3rd, but that could change.

Also because you are travelling quite some distances I would expect quite a lot of variation.

I look at many, but I look at the model forecast data, the general circulation of the atmosphere on the big picture. So detail isn't something you can forecast at this range. So forinstance in July pressure *maybe* high over Iceland which would bring dryer finer weather, but because of the distance, pressure would very likely be low over Scandinavia, so could be wet. I would be guessing at these anomalies at this range.

Plenty of rain and showers again around the Fjords yesterday, no worries with waterfalls, even if it didn't rain now until we return ;)

I'm hoping to get some rays on deck in the North Sea on Sunday 29th May, finger crossed the easterly flow doesn't come with a sea fret (mist & fog) as the North Sea is only about 10°C (50°f) atm, brrr...
