Bruges canal boat rides

Recommended Posts

So on our day in Bruges, we are planning on doing the city on our own, without the ship's tour, and we'd love to experience the canal rides. However, looking online, information about this is scarce when it isn't included in a tour package. Does anyone know:

1) Where the canal boat rides start and where they end?

2) The frequency of boats?

3) If it's possible/necessary to book online in advance, and if so, with whom?

Thanks!

There are several operators, Karen has linked one of them.

They all offer the same tour & (I think) the same prices, but they start from different points along the route. So whichever you choose (ie whichever starting point you come across first) it'll be the same tour route & length - just a different start/finish point along that route.

Note that they're all open boats & all about the same size. This is due to the low bridges.

The one linked by Karen doesn't accept advance bookings except for the full boatload. I very much suspect it's the same with the others.

Inexpensive & very worthwhile, subject to the weather & possible long lines.

JB :)

As mentioned above, there are lots of places around Bruges where you can begin the canal boat tour but one of the most popular spots seemed to be just off Burg Square - that is where we began our canal cruise.

There is no need to book the cruises they leave continuously. As soon as the boat is full, which is a few minutes, they leave. Almost immediately another boat comes along.

I think the cost is 7 Euros and the trip lasts about half an hour.

You've now got all the info, and it looks like this. All the best, Tony

As others have mentioned, the canal boats are plentiful & easy to access. No need for a special tour. We also did the horse & carriage ride from the main square. It is a bit pricey but we enjoyed it. They start at 9am which is a great time because the crowds have not started yet & the route is quite pleasant.

Of course we tried & enjoyed Belgium waffles with fruit.

A bit later we had to try the fries with mayo & Belgian beer.

And we topped off our day at a chocolate shop before returning to the ship.

Have a great time in Bruges!

We were rerouted to Bruges on our cruise last week due to the strike in France. It was probably one of the best ports for us. We did the ship tour 'Bruges on your own' which got you into the city before everything was open. We sat in the main square and had a coffee, enjoying the sun. We then wondered over to the canal area. They boats leave from multiple places and return to the same place you boarded. It is a 30 minute tour. The cost is 8 Euro (I believe) and very worth it! The only tip I can provide for you is to do it right away. We were there at 9:30, after that we noticed quite a long line up. Not sure how fast it moved.
