Moorea day trip from Papeete

Has anyone done a day trip from Papeete to Moorea? Am looking at taking the 09.45 ferry from Papeete and returning on the last ferry at 16.45 from Moorea on 27th May.

A couple of questions:

1. Are there tour operators at the ferry terminal in Moorea and has anyone used them.

2. Any recommendations on what tours to take? ( not looking for snorkelling or beach type tours.

A day trip from Papeete is a great idea. I'm not sure if your exclusion of snorkeling and beach tours excludes the water completely. So I'm not sure if these are relevant to you. But here goes.

I can recommend Alberts. I've gone on their Lagoon Excursion and really enjoyed it.

Alberts also has ATV and Jet Ski tours. I've gone on the ATV tour by another operator (forgot the name). But I think the ATV tours all basically go to the same places, so I think Alberts would be fine.

An alternate to taking a tour is to rent a car from Avis and explore on your own. The Avis office in Moorea is right across the street for the Moorea ferry dock. You can circumnavigate the island in about 1.5 hours, plus stops.

Alberts ATV trip was a highlight of our trip. You get to see the island with a little excitement thrown in!

I would make sure to book your car in advance. And Albert's also rents cars, as well as Avis. Make sure you drive up to the Belvedere, the view is great, and you can walk through the woods and see some of the old ruins of the marae (temples, but just ground-level, no walls to speak of.) There's also the agricultural research station up in the same area, you'll see it on your way to the Belvedere as I remember.

Think about what you want to do for lunch, if anything. Any of the big hotels, and the small hotels as well, such as Les Tipaniers (their restaurant is right on the lagoon). And there are smaller, local restaurants too.
