Non Grills passengers.

I would suggest that anyone of a nervous dissposition does not read this anarchistic thread.

It will I think come as a suprise to a lot of people that there are members of this forum,I am one,my wife is one, that cannot afford to travel in P or Q Grills.

We are fairly long standing Cunarders and are more than happy with our lot.Reading threads I sometimes get the impression that the first thing in a lot of peoples minds is to, as quickly as possible mention a Grill.

It is not my intention to be offensive, and I appologise if it comes over that way.It is just an observation on reading many Cunard threads.

Yes, there are quite a few posters who never fail to mention that they travel in the Grills. I feel that they are just trying to convey what a great experience it is and explain to the rest of us that it is money well spent if you are so inclined.

Not quite sure whether this is a question or a statement. I suspect the Grills are a fascination as they are portrayed as the epitome of the Cunard experience. Vestiges of the old class system, they represent the bye-gone era of ocean liner travel. Many liner afflictionados are allured by this (myself included).

I have to agree with our Host that most threads are focused on Britannia. Over the past few years I have gained a wealth of information about different Britannia grade staterooms and general life on board Cunard ships.

That said, like airline forums, discussions about economy grade travel often tangents towards life at the pointy end. Without presuming to speak for all, I'd wager it has something to do with being aspirational. I claim this after reading numerous threads about visits (and hopeful visits) from the metaphorical upgrade fairy.

I don't see anything wrong with this, nor do I think you were suggesting as much. But certain topics do seem to crop up in number at certain times. Recently there has been quite a few on both upgrades and Grills.

Surprisingly, there hasn't been much on the dress code recently. Of course, now that I write this I'm probably going to spark a hundred or so threads on the subject...

Transportation companies, have long known that offering more service to some travelers is a way to charge more money while getting a passenger from A to B with other travelers all at the same time. First and Business air travelers generally get wider seats and better meal and drinks service than economies. Some are willing to pay more for that service. Cunard has that degree of specialization too with the Grills and Britannia Club. Having traveled on QM2 and QV for fourteen trips so far, Its pretty clear to me that all passengers get pretty good treatment, Most of the facilities are open to all passengers including most bars, casino, spa, shops, library, most decks and the entertainment venues. I cannot imagine any passenger who cannot find fun and enjoyment aboard. So whether you book a Q1 or an inside cabin, all will get there at the same time, and it is more likely than not you will have a great time.

We can't afford Grills either. Lotto win or a visit from the Upgrade Fairy is the only way we'll ever get up there.

Having said that, if ever we did go Grills, we'd likely not want to ever go back which would potentially spoil future Voyages.

We started off in the Grills but once it became obvious that "once in a lifetime" was turning into twice a year we had to review spending.

Our Britannia experiences have all been perfectly acceptable, we have come to realise that a day in Britannia beats a day on any of the other lines we have tried (with Azamara as a possible exception).

I'm not ruling out a return to the Grills if there is a great deal or for a special occasion but for the moment we don't feel we are missing out massively.

Funny,it seems a bit of a sore point to you,yet you start a thread about the very thing that obviously upsets you with yet more posts on Grills...

We use reward points for our tickets. So I could just use double the points and go Grills. But we opt for Britannia. We don't spend all that much non-sleeping time in our cabin. We like sleeping lower in the ship. And we like the sheltered balconies close to the water where we have seen whales, dolphins, and other sea life right outside our door.

As for cabin size: I always buy a spa pass and use the Canyon Ranch facilities to shave and shower on formal nights. That gives my wife the whole cabin to get ready without me being in the way. It's like having a two bathroom-suite.

We booked another T/A (our 4th) just the other day. We again discussed PG or QG. Deck 5 sheltered won out again.

I accumulate so many points a year from work that I don't even have to pay for the grills, and I still elect to go Britannia. I'll use the saved points for something else.

As a follower of CC for over ten years, I have noticed an interesting shift as it relates to the Grills. In the old days it was extremely rare to see a post from anyone sailing in Grills category particularly Queens Grill. CC was not on these folk's radar. They sailed Queens Grill because that was how they lived at home and they wanted a similar experience when they traveled.

Then Cunard began to flog the Grills to the general market place as something "special" a treat out of the ordinary. They did this I believe because they were running out of the old line Grill passenger who were either passing away or turning more and more to first class or private air travel.

Now Queens and Princess Grill paxs are for the most part people who have saved and are treating themselves to this something "special" and they want to talk about it.

Just my observation, no flames please.

We probably should try the Grills experience (or a suite, Neptune, or whatever on other lines) but so far we are perfectly satisfied with basic balcony on several lines - including Cunard. Like most people, we realize that every time we decide to spend discretionary funds on something we are simultaneously deciding against something else. Crossing in Grills would mean one less week in St. Maarten in January - or some other belt-tightening we would not appreciate.

Because we see Cunard primarily as a civilized way to come home from visits with family in England and not a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, we may never experience Grills - much as we might be tempted.

I choose not to cruise Grills as I prefer to have multiple cruises.:D

Totally agree..until I win the lottery !

Also agree that there are some people that always manage to fit into their forum posts that they are "grills" whatever the subject, it's one of the little perks, isn't it....

I really cannot see the point in this discussion in the sense that someone may prefer grills and can afford it, others may treat themselves on special occasions, and yet others choose not to travel grills for a variety of reasons. Only the individuals know their own financial circumstances. It seems that some are trying to imply that if you mention in a post you are travelling in the grills you are somehow trying to show off to those who are not. I don't believe this is the case at all as many many posters on here change the type of cabin they have on each cruise, depending on whether they can 'bag a bargain' or not. I doubt by mentioning the grills they are trying to 'show off', more likely they are excited about the prospect. Also there are many genuine questions raised about travelling in the grills that are helpful to those considering which category to book. Is the op trying to suggest we should all keep quiet about which cabin grade we are in in case we offend others in a lower category? I suggest if you cannot bear to read any posts appertaining to the grills you probably should do your own censoring and leave everyone else to enjoy freedom of speech......

Thank you for putting in words what I was thinking. I often think that Grills passengers take an unnecessary bashing.

I concur.

It's not as if Grills guests are throwing half eaten brioche onto the main promenade from the terrace and proclaiming 'let them eat cake!'

Being a nostalgic of the QE2, I only recently resumed cruising with Cunard. Our first 3 cruises (2 WC segments and 1 Baltic, on all 3 Queens) were in Britannia and Britannia Club, and all 3 were great in their own way.

This time, we are splurging a bit and going to the Med in the Queen's Grill. We naturally have high expectations, and a bit of trepidation, that have been well calibrated by the wealth of information found here. I am thankful to those who shared their views and their experience.

A Grill cruise/TA is not that expensive that many people cannot afford to go Grills if they so choose (possibly instead of some other thing they might do with that extra money). Many frequent cruisers apparently do either, depending on the time, somehow trading grade for frequency. But in my case, the main limitation is more the number of vacation days that I can 'burn' for a cruise in a year, rather than the actual cost of the cruise.

A great thing about Cunard is that, no matter what you choose, Grills or Britannia, you will get value for money.

I have travelled in both the Britannia and Queen's Grill level on Cunard and I just think of the experience as different in both levels. Nothing to rub into a wound if that is the issue here. I like both levels of travel. The food is generally great in both dining areas, Service is similar level except for the Butler but I don't put them to work very much anyway. When I am in the Queen's Grill cabin I like to think I am something but I know I really am just a Southern Tennessee Volunteer with a slightly bigger cabin on a nice vessel going on vacation. I usually don't stick my nose in the air unless there is that smell in the hallway coming from the sewer lines. I say however you travel so long as it is on Cunard you are doing well. ENJOY! :)
