Buffet Etiquette

This will be my second trip on Azura and to be honest we didn't have any issues on our last cruise. As I say be polite don't push and treat people as you would like to be treated. If it's very busy go for a walk and come back later.... It is your holiday after all.... "Simples"[emoji3]

Agree, we've just returned from Azura and never had any buffet problems, we have a toddler who needs a high chair, so always found table first, got highchair, one of us went with 5 year old to choose for him and toddler, then other went back to get theirs, and finally the first person went back for theirs! Eating in MDR is much more civilised, but after toddler kicking off in MDR on second day we avoided it for lunches after that as buffet was quicker getting food on the table for him!

This thread has made me chuckle! If any of you have worked in retail like myself you would know that what goes on in the buffet is just Joe Public being his rude, ignorant and often aggressive self. It just brings the worst out of people and shows how little respect people have towards each other. I take the buffet in my stride because i see this everyday at work!

It is quite staggering how little respect people have for each other in todays society. It's especially bad in older people I've found. People just doing whatever they want to do, however they want to do it and when they want to do it. It's the same reason why you see so much bad driving on the roads.

Those who say they experience no problems in the buffet could well be those who push and shove.

Making sarky comments that sound clever is all very well, but not when it means making a assertion of very bad behaviour against specific people.

Anyway, most people in the buffet behave well. A very few don't. there is no pushing and shoving.

I was not making assertions against specific people. This thread has run to 6 pages with contributors making numerous points. An earlier post by a person who has worked in retail referred to people being rude and aggressive and earlier comments referred to how some individuals behave by for example walking/elbowing through the buffet (presumably the wrong way) to make their choices and then pick up their trays and walk their way through those who queue in an orderly fashion.

And that is perpetrating the idea that there is a right way and a wrong way, and the moaners are those doing it right.

Silly me. I had assumed that the entrance was where you picked up your tray and not through the sign on a stand that read "Exit". Those who enter through the exit are one of the main causes of congestion.

Absolutely.

Walk in through the entrance.

Have a browse around to see what is available.

Pick up tray.

Get food.

Leave (through exit for the pedantic)

Eat.

Simple.

Agree - Well said

This is a copy of my post on another thread in our support, based on personal experiences

Quote

From all posts it is proven that obnoxiousness and rudeness is a subjective point of view, based on personal acceptable standards, being where the bar is set.

It appears, if say, person number one finds person number two obnoxious and rude, others may find person number two's presence and persona acceptable, same being likeminded as person number two.

Add to this the premis, that person number two, together with likeminded people, are genuinely not knowing they are obnoxious, and you have a strange mix.

But then, totally deluded person number two, together with likeminded people, condemns person number one of being rude and obnoxious. The saga continues.

Unquite

You missed the part that person number one was the one who was deluded, believing that their behaviour was acceptable.

Just like the many people on here saying that you MUST use the buffet this way and not that way.

Manners are not prescribed. You either have them or you don't.

This topic is a hoot keep it coming.

We will be on our first P&O UK cruise in a few weeks time, our first with them after sailing with most of the others. Perhaps I should bring my old army helmet on board to cope with the situation.

Not sure which line, think it was HAL, back in the day there were waiters at the end of the buffet line who would take your tray and escort you to your table. Kind of like they used to escort you to your cabin.

They used to do this on the old Thomson Destiny too, a very civilised way of doing it. They then served fruit juices, tea, coffee and fresh toast. If you wanted more food you just joined the queue again.

On the Thomson Majesty one MDR is used like a buffet, they seat you first then you go and get your food, your preferred fruit juice is usually waiting for you when you return.

I wanted to go and upset the diagonal diners on the Arcadia, Mrs Holiday said "Don't you dare":mad:

It's fair to say this is a small minority who carry off like what some posters have mentioned.

Some are not even using the buffett and abuse it , the times we have seen folks sat no drink or food sat with their feet up reading a book,

no intension of moving or eating for that matter .Regardless of how busy it is .

Whilst we are on the subject of a minority ,the MD's get their fair share as well.

The 6.30 sitting is a classic when the MD doors open and some go into stampede mode pushing and barging past people and the daft thing is

they are all going to pre assigned tables but they must get there first.

Then you get the "Photo my meal guy" ... if the waiter puts it on the table , he's going to photo it with his super sized camera that with every flash lights up half the dinning room every other minute for the duration of the entire meal.

When the waiter comes and asks us "if we need anything else" you feel like saying a welders mask would be handy .;)

Thing is what I'm trying to get accross is that whatever your choice be it buffett or MD you are going to get someone who once in a while makes you think

I could do without this .:)

Well I can assure you I've had no problems with ANY buffet and I certainly don't PUSH AND SHOVE, or maybe I've had no problems because I'm more tolerant and I'm on holiday so don't let silly things bother me.

Best one.

Have enough stress in my job.

So I just chill.

If someone is in that must of a rush for food, they can have it. Lol

No different to any other cruise line. I have sailed with a few different ones and they all have the same problems.

As mentioned previously the perpetrators are often not those who experience problems. After all those who wander around the buffet in a disorderly fashion will have nothing to complain about. I'm not suggesting for a moment that that is anyone in particular on here but some of the points suggest it might be. If the cap fits and all that!

In fairness there are very few who adopt the "I'm all right Jack" attitude but it only takes one or two to upset the apple cart. The major issues are caused by those who simply get in the way by either entering the buffet through the exit and those who wander around looking to see what's on offer and then walking back to the entrance to pick up their trays past diners coming in the opposite direction.

Let's face it bad manners are rife on cruise ships epitomised by those who reserve sunbeds but that is a whole different issue.
