Thanks, John.

Can't wait to see where they are going to put 15 single cabins. I got a chuckle over the lamp post and fire hydrant addition.

Hi Scrapnana,

The Empire Casino currently has 17 windows along its length... in two groups.

Just perfect for providing those "Ocean View Single" cabins with an ocean view!

Just saying, probably wrong as usual!

Best wishes.

Don't think they are ocean view but inside singles will also be on deck 13.

Just tried a false booking and inside singles are on deck 13.

Thanks, I got "404" on the original link as well since I'm in the US.

Micky Arison was opposed to putting in single cabins. If memory serves he had said it was not cost effective to produce some one-off cabins when the vast majority were mass produced. Since this is a retrofit however that cost argument no longer is true.

Deck 13 cabins will doubtfully extend past B stairway since that open area between B and C is the low hover medivac area.

The kennel extension will likely take over the Boardwalk Cafe galley. I recall it used only on port days in warm weather. I hope they will keep the port side stairway to deck 13 open and not closed off as is the starboard side when the kennel is occupied.

On any ship space is money. Did anybody use the golf simulator? I've seen the two hot tubs used from time to time but never the ankle-deep splash pool. However I do have a memory of this area on a December Caribbean cruise as we awaited sail away from a freezing New York - the incongruity of a bag of rock salt perched next to a steaming hot tub. :D

I've mentioned in another thread that I believe Payne has been involved in this all along but client confidentiality kept him from divulging anything.

As Cunard marked its illustrious 175 year history with yesterday's celebratory departure from New York of its flagship, Queen Mary 2, it is proud to announce the next chapter of innovation and investment, introducing new designs and guest experiences to the world’s most iconic ocean liner.

From the company’s inception, Cunard has been at the forefront of ocean travel. Through establishing the first scheduled transatlantic crossings, to the first electric lightbulbs and en-suite bathrooms at sea, to the grandeur of the floating palaces of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, to the launch of the current fleet.

To ensure the tradition continues, Queen Mary 2 will undergo an extensive 25 day dry dock refurbishment at the Blohm+Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany next summer, 27 May- 21 June 2016.

This major refurbishment will further refine and refresh guest interior spaces and launch new exciting innovations designed to exceed guest expectations. Three of the key developments are announced today, reflecting the changing needs of Cunard’s guests:

Research shows that increasing numbers of guests are seeking to holiday in multi-generational groups – grandparents, parents and children. Often this necessitates one member of the family travelling as an individual. To support this, and for those simply travelling alone, for the first time, 15 Single Staterooms will be introduced onto Queen Mary 2 during the refit.

With further growing trends for those booking Balcony staterooms and those wishing to have more flexibility in their dining arrangements, 30 additional Britannia Club Balcony Staterooms will be created on board. Guests travelling in these staterooms will be able to dine at a time of their own choosing in the dedicated Britannia Club restaurant, which will be expanded.

Just as families are holidaying across the generations, so pets are increasingly seen as integral to the family group. Queen Mary 2 is already the only cruise liner in the world to offer dedicated kennels and currently carries up to 12 dogs and cats on each Transatlantic crossing. To meet strong demand - these kennel places frequently sell out - a further ten kennels will be created for four legged travellers.

With an eye to the detail that differentiates Cunard, both a lamp post and a fire hydrant will be installed on the area of deck reserved for dog walking as part of the kennels development, so that dogs from either side of the pond will feel equally at home. This was previously a feature of the kennels on Cunard’s former flagship, QE2, and was first introduced on board Queen Mary at the suggestion of The Duke of Windsor.

Extensive research has informed a series of further developments which will be revealed over the coming months, building on the flagship’s strengths as the epitome of luxury on a grand scale.

Angus Struthers, Cunard Director, said:

''Queen Mary 2 is an icon in the world of luxury ocean travel. A ship that turns heads everywhere she goes, she is the pride of the Cunard fleet and we are committed to ensuring her reputation grows ever stronger.”

“These enhancements are just the beginning of an exciting revitalisation for Queen Mary 2, and we look forward to making more announcements about this impressive refit in the coming months,” Struthers added.

The newly announced additional accommodation goes on sale on 15 July 2015 for Queen Mary 2 Summer sailings from late June 2016.

We saw the door marked 'Kennel' on QM2 when we were on the fall colors cruise. I was intrigued then as I am now....is this for TA crossings only?

If we take our dogs along, will we have to do a b2b to get them home without having to fly? We've always wished we could take our 2 little pooches along on our cruises.

Yes, the kennels are only used for crossings. Loved the comment about the lamppost & fire hydrant !

I just received an e-mail from Cunard about the QM2 refit. Here are the contents of that e-mail. I think some of the details about the kennels mentioned here expand a bit on what was mentioned earlier in the press release.

A royal rejuvenation

We are pleased to announce that flagship Queen Mary 2 will undergo a multi-million dollar refit at the Blohm & Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany in Summer 2016. The renovations will include the enhancements listed below, with further exciting changes to be announced in the coming months.

Additional Britannia Club staterooms

The refit will see the addition of 30 Britannia Club staterooms to Deck 13. Queen Mary 2's grand size assures that the added accommodations will not affect the plentiful amount of public space. Britannia Club guests enjoy a pillow concierge menu, as well as single seat dining in the Britannia Club restaurant.

Single staterooms

In consideration of the solo traveller, single staterooms will be added to our flagship during the refit, making this offering now available fleet-wide. The 15 single-occupancy Oceanview rooms will go on sale today, 15 July 2015.

Additional kennel spaces

As the only kennels at sea, this very popular feature will see an additional 10 spaces added during Queen Mary 2's refit. Further modifications include an enhancement of the owners lounge, a new inside play area and a larger outside walking area. New kennel spaces go on sale today, 15 July 2015.

Thanks for sharing the diagram. As I dig around on the Cunard website, I cannot find any information relevant to single staterooms for post-renovation sailings (i.e. no Single Stateroom category appears or any reference thereto. Also, no post-renovation deck plans for relevant bookings). Very frustrating.

Wonderful! What goes around comes around-so says wise grandmothers. Back in 2004 when QM2 was new, I was speaking with the late John Maxtone-Graham about the ship on which I had just traveled. We agreed that the Winter Garden was not a well executed idea; and I expressed real annoyance about the absence of single cabins. John said that he had been brought in as an advisor during the development of QM2 and that he had urged the creation of Single Cabins; in his experience a large percentage of Trans-Atlantic passengers were single travelers; also he urged the provision of a proper Barber Shop like the original Queens because many men do not care to use beauty salons. So now -at last -we get the Single accommodations. I wonder what they will do with the Winter Garden? I do hope they don’t do anything like the redo of the firstQE when they put in that dreadful mid-ships bar with a totally inappropriate decorative scheme. They also mucked up the decor in some of the cabins. I don’t think we’ll get a proper Barber Shop.

This is a plea that they don’t mess with the real elegance of the ship. PLEASE, if it ain’t broke DON’T FIX IT!:D

Thanks for posting this. The drawing may not be perfectly to scale, but it seems oddly wide and shallow compared to balcony cabins, which are fairly narrow, but quite deep. It looks like a lot of space. What category/dining room will these be in?

Hi Jack and Diane. We were on qm2 for the first bit of 175 crossing. The band of the Irish guards were playing on deck 13. Can't do that again

It's funny that you mention that performance. One of my first thoughts about he conversion of deck 13 to cabins was the loss of open space for deck events like that. On Shrove Tuesday, they had pancake races up there. I can't imagine that being moved to the Queens Room.

The aspect ratio has been adjusted to fit the breadth of the former Photo Gallery passageway that connects the C and D Stairways without having to pass through the Britannia dining room. These six singles will be about 172 sq, slightly larger than a standard inside, but definitely smaller than the standard balcony cabins. Like the other new singles on Decks 2 and 13, these passengers will be served in the Britannia restaurant.

I wonder if we - meaning this board collectively - may have forced Cunard to make some public announcement? We did post of the booking engine showing new staterooms that heretofore did not exist. Guess they couldn't pretend this was not happening once certain people on board started to get bombarded with questions. :D

Quite suprised Cunard have only just announced the dates for the refit. My latest cunard broucher shows no cruises for the QM2 on those dates, so I thought it was obvious that would be the dates for the refit. Cunard must have known for a least 2 years, for all the pre booking of ports they would have had to make:confused:.

The refit dates are not news but this is the first details they have announced.

I was curious. I have only sailed the QM2 once and we loved it but I would have thought that the Kings Court was in need to be updated. Were people surprised that it was not listed?

Just wondering.

Keith

It might still be, the email I had said further details will be released in the coming months.
