Mexico Travel Warning Update

Mexico is a cesspool of crime.

Now it's worse than ever.

From the LA Times.........

"Prosecutors opened 2,234 homicide investigations last month, according to government statistics released Friday. That’s an increase of 40% over June of last year and 80% over June of 2015.

Rising demand for heroin in the United States and a bloody power struggle inside one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels have put the country on track to record more killings in 2017 than in any year since the government began releasing crime data in 1997.

The 12,155 homicide cases opened from January to June make 2017 the deadliest first half of a year.

Though violence used to be concentrated in a handful of states, it is now rising nationwide, with 27 of Mexico’s 32 states recording an uptick in homicides compared with last year.

That includes states that are home to formerly tranquil tourist destinations including Cancun and Cabo San Lucas, which have each been the site of deadly shootouts".

Cozumel is specifically mentioned.

Quintana Roo (includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, and Tulum): U.S. citizens should be aware that according to Government of Mexico statistics, the state of Quintana Roo experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents, in which innocent bystanders have been injured or killed, have occurred.

Unfortunately, Cozumel is also included in the warnings. :(

Good possibility that the Mexican Riviera cruises may come to a screeching halt like they did several years ago.

And they are repositioning Royal from the east coast to LA. Wonder how that will play out if there are no Mexican Rivera cruises.

Booked on one of those in 2018. We shall see what happens as time goes on. A California coastal would be fine if an itinerary change is in order.

Sounds like they're going to pay for that wall in ways they never thought of.

US citizens are not the only ones that come to my wonderful country, México.

Actually it's less than a half.

We have many tourists from Europe, Canada, and all over the world. Where there is no travel warning against Mexico!.[emoji1166]

Unfortunately, that is not true. Canada also has issued a "high risk" travel warning for non-essential (read "leisure") travel.

That´s true, but does not affect as many states as the one the US has.

My post was to reply to a clearly political and non sense post.:)

Thanks for the link! Wow! That is scary. We have Mexican Riviera cruise scheduled in April 2019. Maybe there's hope this will be cleaned up by then??? We will probably just stay on the ship and enjoy what the Royal has to offer. Not really interested in the ports anyway but wanted to experience the Royal since she will be close to us on the West Coast.

As the U.S.State Dept. notes, since most of the heroin trade in Mexico is bound for the northern borders and the increased demand in the U.S.A., perhaps Mexico should be sending us the bill for their large expenditures to keep tourists safe... :o

12,155 homicides since January 2017 are political? Pfffft. NIce try.

If your family members were killed or affected by this would you still be posting this nonsense?

Unfortunately, those numbers are not accurate. There are many more that are currently listed as missing (disappeared as Mexico likes to call them). These individuals are unaccounted as their bodies are not yet found.

Many will say that murders in Chicago are up therefore is just as bad as Mexico. The murders in Chicago are concentrated in certain areas where there are gang wars going on. Not spread across vast areas frequented by tourists. A few weeks ago there was a shooting in broad daylight (around 2 pm if not mistaken) right on the beach in Cabo.
