Just found the new travel warning to Mexico for U.S. Citizens..

https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/mexico-travel-warning.html

We will be on The Reflection which has a scheduled port stop in Cozumel Dec. 31..

Has any one been notified of any schedule changes for Mexican ports in the next few weeks.. If so, please advise what the changes were.. I was looking forward to going into Cozumel, again, but understand the major problems with gangs, they have had in many areas of Mexico.. It's sad for me to see these problems that the people of Mexico have with gangs..We've driven in Mexico many times in our young single years & had such wonderful experiences there & met so many lovely people in Mexico..:(:(

It's doubtful that you will have any schedule change, unless things deteriorate very badly in the next few months. You can watch the Celebrity website and look to the Roll Call -- if anyone sees any changes it will certainly be reported there.

There is always a chance of trouble whenever you go on shore, and if you are worried, you can stay on the ship that day.

Here is part of the US government's warning statement:

"Gun battles between rival criminal organizations or with Mexican authorities have taken place on streets and in public places during broad daylight. The Mexican government dedicates substantial resources to protect visitors to major tourist destinations and has engaged in an extensive effort to counter criminal organizations that engage in narcotics trafficking and other unlawful activities throughout Mexico. There is no evidence that criminal organizations have targeted U.S. citizens based on their nationality. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the level of drug-related violence and crime that are reported in the border region or in areas along major trafficking routes."

This is actually pretty much the same travel warnings that the US govt. has been issuing for Mexico over the past several years. There is really nothing new. The northern border towns and drug routes are the hot spots that the warning addresses. Many of the resort areas on the Pacific side are safe, with some exceptions, and most of the resorts on the Yucatan are safe. With your concern for Cozumel, it is very safe given that it is an island on the Caribbean side....along with Isla Mujeres etc. While the state has seen an uptick in homicides, the tourist are not the ones being targeted.

The U.S. is also investigating deaths and possible sexual assaults after drinking at some big name all inclusive resorts. Bootleg type liquor bottled and served illegally. Bad news for guests in the Cancun area and agencies like Apple Vacations. Tourists are being seriously warned before visiting.

I have been to Cozumel twice in the past year, once on the Reflection, and also for one of my daughter's wedding. We never felt unsafe. Unless something radically changes, we would happily go back.

We'll be on a NCL Panama Canal cruise next year that stops in Acapulco and Cabo. We've never visited the Mexican Riviera and are looking forward to seeing it. I expect we will have a great time, but we plan to be careful, and probably use ship tours. Right now, I see no reason to avoid cruises that visit Mexico. In the world we live in, we all have to be vigilant and careful, unfortunately everywhere.

I would also be concerned about drinking any alcohol when there. There have been reports on the news about some resorts in Cancun and a few other places that were serving some stuff that was tainted.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/news/2017/07/28/expert-tips-avoiding-tainted-alcohol-mexico/518368001/

It was only at a few AI resorts but it could easily be popping up at other places.

Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌞

There has been tainted alcohol found at popular bars like Senor Frogs too.

I'd NOT drink any alcohol anywhere in Mexico again. It has been found in Cancun, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta and Playa del Carmen.

Also the hospitals and police are colluding to get money, delaying life saving treatment. Always make sure you have at least 5 thousand in credit limit on your credit cards. ( Some tourists needed $50,000 to get care in a hospital). Some travel insurance small print will not cover you if proven intoxicated..whether by drugs, over drinking or tainted alcohol.

Please check out this website started by a parent of a dead child with facts the Mexican govt. is trying to hide. Even tho we have been to Mexico on land vacations 6 times, we won't be drinking in Mexico again. We'll have our Margaritas onboard.

Unfortunately, we could say the same thing about some areas in large US cities, notably South side of Chicago. We just have to avoid such areas both domesticly and internationally.

I spent two years traveling to Mexico and working there. I had to have body guards with me from the time I passed through customs until the time I flew out. Police and taxi cabs are not to be trusted. The streets are not safe. I stayed at the same hotel as the Pope when in Mexico City and was woken up by machine gunfire outside one night.

Mexico is not safe. You are foolish for thinking that you can travel there safely, despite travel advisories.

I was in Mexico a few years back. On our last day of vacation, I Fell at the hotel, was escorted by the hotel manager to the American hospital. The ambulance EMT was originally from California. I was treated with respect, the hospital set my arm, and then back to the hotel, who assisted my husband and I to the airport to make our flight. Went to my orthopedist when I returned and he said they did a fine job.

We are off the Mexico again in November, with no apprehension. We are world travelers, just back from Europe, we are always aware of our surroundings, so I will stay on our resort, enjoy my glass of wine or two. I don't live far from San Bernardino where the terrorist attack occurred. You never know what could happen even in your safe little neighborhood. We will just enjoy the rest of our life, traveling the world.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I did not, but I am not so foolish to think nothing will ever happen to me. My point is, until I hear otherwise, I don't think cruise ship passengers will have problems, unless they act foolishly and ignore guidelines.

I guess we can agree to disagree about travel in Mexico.

Mexico is in for some hard times with gang violence. Then add the alcohol issue, at least for me, why take the chance.

You can have a great time there in Mexico or in any other destination or have an issue including any city in the US, so I am not suggesting it is only Mexico. I think the events happening in broad daylight and in/close to tourist areas is concerning along with trusting what you are drinking. Glad I like bottled beer as my choice assuming that is at least safer.

Being from the Chicago area (admittedly not the south side) I am curious as to why you singled that out as an area in the US of particular note? It does have it's problems, but there are similar areas in all major cities in the US. I agree with your main point - we have bad areas here at home as well which one should avoid or use extra caution.

Didn't see Cozumel on the list but did see Ensenada...a port on our next cruise. We did not plan on getting off there anyhow...

We don't get off at Cozumel anymore....have visited it many times..nothing enticing us there anymore..Only thing we would drink in Mexico was beer and I hate beer

We were lucky to enjoy W Coast Mexican ports on a cruise a few yrs ago..some ports were fine & very enjoyable, but we would not do that itin again..

On our cruise Acapulco had just had a tourist killed in gang crossfire. Our Radiance of the Seas Captain was very good about warnings and options. Some folks did not go off ship, others had no fear..

.We went with a previously booked Royal C excursion to a double gated, and walled upscale pvt resort, small group with armed car behind us Resort had machine gunners on the beach.. Great day but daunting to have all that protection. Not going there again..so beautiful, so dangerous, so sad!

And yet those ports are still WAY safer than Chicago (or many other US cities). Here in LA we had 661 people killed last year, 8 of them in San Pedro where the Celebrity ships dock. 20+ in Long Beach where the Carnival ships dock. Makes Mexico seem like a pretty safe place.

Here is the warning :Quintana Roo (includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, and Tulum): U.S. citizens should be aware that according to Government of Mexico statistics, the state of Quintana Roo experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents, in which innocent bystanders have been injured or killed, have occurred.

And, of course, it's quite unthinkable that there may be any political motivation behind the published warnings about Mexico, just like there was no political motivation behind the recent rewording of references to climate change on various US government web-sites. So that's fine.

Because it has the highest murder rate of any city in the US due to drug related gang violence - in some ways similar to the problems Mexico is facing.

That's correct. The cruise ship passengers won't have problems until they HAVE problems. It is too unpredictable. No offense, however if between you and me, I prefer it to be you.
