British Night

We have just received our final information and it says two formal and one British night. Am I right in saying this means dressing in red, white and blue? If so, would it need to be smart. I think any outfit of that kind I could put together would more likely be casual. Would this be a problem?

I can't say I've seen that many people dress up in red white and blue on British night on Braemar. I have though seen lots of red white and blue neckerchiefs and plastic hats presumably bought from the shop on board. I do have a Union Flag waistcoat which I have never worn because it is the first thing I reject when my luggage is too heavy. In conclusion it is not compulsory to dress up in red white and blue and many people including us don't bother. In the past they also had a western night but I'm pleased to say that seems to have died a death.

These used to be handed out free by the entertainment staff as people entered the show lounge, along with flags and other small items of a similar nature on the other themed evenings.

We used to look forward to the theme nights. Tropical, Western, Rock and Roll and British nights.

Those plus the AI and the good Ballroom Dancing was one of the many reasons we cruise with Fred.

Nobody forced anybody to participate so not sure why Fred have dumped them.

Can't be money or can it.

I have always disliked "British" night on Fred. Olsen ships especially on long voyages when there a signifiant number of non-British passengers on board. If such a night is needed (and I doubt it) why not call it "Red/White/Blue" night and this will cover a number of countries eg France, USA, Netherlands etc?

We have also never liked "British" night, particularly the sing song that goes along with it. We do sometimes pay lip service to it and wear something in those colours, if we've taken them with us. They did have a brief try at International night but that didn't seem to be very well supported.

Most of the theme nights they used to have were a bit like fancy dress and there were always those who didn't take part. But I was really put off, on our first Fred. cruise, on country and western night; I was wearing a flowery dress and a man on our dinner table commented "you could have made a bit more effort".

The only theme nights we ever enjoyed were tropical nights as it gave an excuse to dress brightly without looking silly and it seemed to make everyone more cheerful.

Fred stopped theme nights as passengers didn't like them (although I wasn't asked) and the reason for this one was VE anniversary!!!!

I have no objection to theme nights so long as I don't have to join in but what I would really like to see disappear is the Baked Alaska parade, I don't think a Baked Alaska is that special anymore it deserves to have a parade.

We were on Black Watch on the South American Discovery and there were endless theme nights. Off the top of my head we had: Nautical, Tropical, British, Rock'n'roll, Wild West, Touch of Yellow (St David's Day), Touch of Red (Valentine's Night), Blue and White (Burns Night), Sixties and Seventies, Black and White. We took part in some but not all.
