Can you pre-order room service?

Can we order room service to be delivered later that same day? For example: we phone in our order at 3:00pm for a 9:00pm arrival at our cabin. Can that be done?

If you're ordering from the room service menu, then I do believe you can. But if you wish to order from the MDR menu that can only be called in during the first hour the MDR is open.

Yes, I do mean from the room service menu.

This could be one of those 'sometimes' on 'some ships' things.

I think you will find some inconsistencies ship to ship, cruise to cruise.

Certain worth inquiring once on the ship.

We were in a vista suite on the Zuiderdam recently. We knew the excursion (our trip through the Panama Canal) was going to be a long day and would get back late. We asked the concierge in the Lounge the day before to order our dinner from the MDR, and he did. We came back from our excursion and our food was waiting for us.

PS - the bad news was, our excursion was late returning. We had warned the concierge about this but he dismissed us, saying it was not going to be a problem. Well, the food was delivered at 7:30 and we returned to our room at 8:45. Cold soup, cold lamb chops and melted ice cream. So be careful about the time you ask for your food to be delivered.

This was how it was on The Nieuw Amsterdam for us on our 24 day Med cruise. We would call when MDR was open so we could order what was on the menu. So at 5 pm we would call and give them a time we would like. We were told dinner from MDR would be fine only up to 8:30 pm.

Maybe it will be different on the other ships. We will see on The Eurodam this Oct.

Great advice. One more thing to remember - you likely will not be able to get it delivered until about 6:15 - 6:30 PM. It has something to do with when they prepare the entrees,

I think.

So this is great! I can pre order from the Room Service Menu when I go out in the AM (mark a time) and have those items sitting in my cabin when I return from an exhausting excursion. Thus, allowing me to relax and chill with a little food in my hypoglycemic diabetic tummy while I wait for dinner. Avoiding HANGRY is always important to save my marriage! :p

I've looked at the posted RS menu (thanks to the well prepared CC poster here) and a few items would be perfect for me, versus picking up pastry (not good) in the coffee shop when I get back!:o:(

Another option to prevent the anguish with melted ice cream is to bring a few energy bars to snack on then order dinner when you return as it rarely take more than an hour to get your food piping hot with unmelted ice cream just in case your tour is late. Or grab a few crackers, fruit and some cheese or cold cuts the day before or that morning from the Lido.

I am pretty sure that Room Service personnel do not have unescorted access to your stateroom (don't have their own key cards). So if they arrive and your Room Steward is not available (on break), they will not be able to leave your order in your stateroom.

We have taken to doing "Gala" night dinner in the room on last couple of cruises. Always delivered hot and on time. But, I actually have called at 4:00 or so to order and just told them when we wanted delivered. Didn't have problem placing order that early and no wait getting thru to room service line. Probably varies by ship though. It amazes me how many people on our cruises believe just the "Room Service" menu items can be ordered thru room service. We have clued in several couples as to the MDR menu options through room service and they were unaware of it and did take advantage of it and thanked us later.

Do you just look at the daily menu, or can you get the MDR menu in advance? We usually just do room service menu, but would like the option of the MDR menu. Thanks! Leaving on the Zaandam Sunday for 23 days.

After lunch the MDR menu will be posted outside the MDR, both up and down as I recall(or if not on one floor, just check the other). I either just write down what we want OR (finally figured this out after couple cruises-duh) just take pic with your phone.

Wow, have fun on your 23 day cruise. I am looking at a TA cruise next fall so hope we can do that.

Ask your MDR waiter the evening before - they sometimes have copies of it. On one cruise, he gave each of us one every night (nice touch IMO) without us ever asking.

This is not surprising, as other cruise lines (and most hotels) do not allow this. I would not have known this either if not for this great message board!

Which is one reason I prefer HAL. They still offer hot breakfast to order to room which many cruise lines no longer offer from what I understand. And I think many, if not most, main stream cruise lines don't offer full MDR menu for room service. Don't know about the Crystal, Oceania, other upscale lines as can't afford them. We are retired and like to "extend" our cruise budget and I seem to be able to find good deals on HAL that meet our needs.
