Bringing a few special bottles onboard?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if I am allowed to bring a few special bottles of wine on the ship? Wines that wouldn't be on their list? Anyone have experience with this?

Not with wine but with Tequila. No problem. Heck, they are all inclusive so the more you drink your own stuff, the more $$ they make. A group went ashore in Mexico for a Tequila Tour and came back loaded (both ways) with specialty Tequila. In a snap, the Pool Bar crew had shot glasses, salt, and lime for everyone. The Tequila Tour group was very generous and that was our afternoon "pass around" on the pool deck. Great time was had by all.

Thanks Jim! I know they're all inclusive. With wine I'm a little selective in what I"ll drink. And they may have lots of choices on the included list I'll enjoy. But just in case, I always like to bring a couple bottles just to have some of my favorites along. I'm thinking my favorite grower champagne Egly Ouriet, an awesome Jolie Laide trousseau gris and a beautiful Tenuta le Calcinaie Vernaccia di San Gimignano. They would be perfect on a hot day by the pool or on a sunbed, or enjoyed with fresh oysters. Ahh....I'm there already in spirit. :)

I don't know much about wine and when it's "free" I'm not very picky. That said even I can tell that the usual daily pours are not "all that."

We usually drink them anyway, sometimes buying a bottle or three.

That said, if you appreciate wine, it would prob be a good idea to bring some bottles to enhance your enjoyment. You will have what you want when you want it.

Others who know a lot more about wine may weigh in with more info re the wine list, etc. Ive always tempered my expectations with the wine list thinking that a ship is a lousy place to "cellar" wine with the motion and the possible temperature fluctuations.

On a different topic, I love oysters! I don't recall too many oysters on SD. Have I been missing them? Is this one of those "requests" that I've not yet caught on to?

WHAT, no oysters?! It's an outrage I tell you! :p I'll manage somehow...:D

They do sometimes have oysters, I recall. Last year on the Dover-Lisbon cruise, we brought some wine, meat, cheese back on board and had a couple of delightful afternoons snacking! However, I think there is a corkage charge if you bring your own wine to the dining room -- someone else can likely verify that.

HH is from the UK ( posh part) so no, not a member of the esteemed groups you refer to.

Great champagne choice and no they dont have it onboard. They have plenty of others though at good prices.

They also have pinot gris from Europe.

The Italian wine seems a curious choice as it is really inexpensive and is a "glugging" wine. So why carry this around ?

The nearest equivalent onboard is a Chablis villages and HH believes there is a Muscadetde Sevre: perfect for oysters (which they rarely have except in the Med off France).

They do an Italian Pinot Grigio but HH finds it too fruity.

They also do a really nice rose from the Languedoc as a pouring wine and there is a "M" de Minuty Provencal rose but it is quite oldnow and is sold for silly money ($46).

There may be a corkage fee of $10 levied, so not really worth it for the Italian white.

Maybe you should try the European pinot gris.

Well perhaps in the UK Maria is a male name?? :D And yes HoHum I saw that in your profile. Jamie Goode, Jancis Robinson....all esteemed wine names from that side of the pond. We do have posters from England and France and Italy on our wine boards btw.

I plan on drinking most of what I bring by the glass by the pool. or in my room....corkage is a dirty word. Only bringing a few bottles. Bubble wrap is my friend and I'm used to travelling with wine.

I'm lucky to live in a state where we have alot of BYOB restaurants so that's usually what my friends and I do.. I rarely buy off a wine list unless I'm in NYC and I go to a place where my friend is the Somm.

Offense? (spelled the American way of course) I have very thick skin and a wicked sense of humor.

I am 12 mentally perhaps? Keeps me young. My energy draws all the young at heart and lighthearted to me.. My very serious line of work causes me to be quite NOT serious outside of it. No one steals my joy. ;)
