Caribbean Excursions

We are taking Adonia in November for our first Caribbean cruise and need advice on which islands are better seen on a organised excursion and which islands done on our own. We are really confused as all the advice we have seen is somewhat conflicting. We really are novices and know nothing, apart from what we have read. So we need sound and sensible advice.

If you tell us what islands you're visiting I'm sure people will help. if you go to the Ports of Call boards you'll also get lots of good ideas. You won't get people agreeing on whether it's better to DIY or go on organised tours. Once you get on the ship you might feel you have to buy tours but the Caribbean is all about relaxing so don't fall for the sales pitch.

If you go on FB and look for Peter Dagnall he may produce you a tailored "Ports of Call" Booklet for you. He did one for us free of charge. Its excellent.

We have had the same issue and we too are first time cruisers to the Caribbean, and have digested all the answers and decided if we are looking at long all day tours [especially if they have some kind of boat element] we are happier doing a P & O tour, as they are then liable to get you to the ship if things get delayed.

Shorter tours or beach days, we are happy using local transport and doing our own thing.

We would like to do Harrison Caves in Barbados, and this isn't offered as a P&O tour, so will do this independently

So things you can only do through P&O, so these have been booked already.

We very rarely do P&O tours and have never had any problem getting back to the ship. We've even done independent boat tours but just take care that we have a plan B. Private tour organisers depend on positive reviews on this site and TripAdvisor. Even one post saying that someone failed to get back to the ship would end their livelihood. We were once caught in a land-slip and our tour guide made sure we got back to the ship in time but the P&O tour buses arrived 3 hours later, caught by the same event.

I am also on Adonia in November. I have been to the Caribbean a few times and unless you want a trip by boat, I would always recommend a taxi. You see what you want and can spend more time at a places. The drivers will drop you at a beach and return when you want them to. Always pay when you get back to the ship and you should have no problem. Unless you really want a certain P&O trip, I would advise waiting until you get on board before booking because the tour talks on board can often give you ideas about what you want to do.
