Can I give extra gratuities to workers on the ship (i.e. Bartenders, waiters, Butlers etc.) in the form of poker chips left over from "Celebrities" OBC? I like to give extra to certain people and have more obc than I need. Are they able to keep them and cash them in at full face value? EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA

If possible, this would be an easy way to make sure that people who took care of me are directly taken care of without having to necessarily find out their name etc. I also know that there is no such thing as worthless onboard credit-My wife has proven that point. I have left the ship before with chips that I forgot to cash in that I would rather see the crew get if they could use them.

But the chips will still be good on your next Celebrity cruise wouldn't they?

You can do what DH does & take $150 of the OBC in promotional chips and turns it into $125-150 of real money which we use to tip crew. Once in awhile he doesn't do that well but then we tip extra out of our pocket.

Crew can not gamble on the ships and just as you can't cash them in for cash, they would not be able to. If they tried, I would think Celebrity would just take them from them and they would get nothing. If you want to give extra, just give cash.

I've physically seen people give the tickets from the slot machines and not just to casino personnel. Seen it also at land based casinos, it's not uncommon. I'm sure there's a way for them to cash them on. I would however ask.

That may work if you are using real chips that have a value but I'm not sure. I understood the OP to be asking about the promotional chips you get if using OBC from X in the casino.

We prepay gratuities, but take $300-400 in cash to tip at the end of a cruise. We like knowing that persons that earn a gratuity receive something for sure from us. We worked with the public for nearly 40 years each and appreciate good customer service.

Tickets from the slot machines are a lot different than poker chips obtained with non-refundable OBC. The OP can't cash them in, they have to use them, thus the crew couldn't cash them in either.

I'm in the food service business(catering)So nice to see some "Angels" on this site, who tip over & above, rather than those who like to remove the auto tip & pocket it. Seen that several times.

One time what I did for a bartender, was order a drink with an up charge ( I was on a package) and added a nice healthy tip which came directly out of my OBC

I have never understood tipping at the end of a cruise to those , such as Cabin Stewards, that are providing service to me on a daily basis. I purposely seek out my Cabin Steward(s) upon arrival and give them a substantial cash tip. Believe me, they remember every day, for example, that fresh ice be put in my cabin every day at 4 PM that I might have a cocktail in my cabin before dinner. I carry a bunch of one dollar bills for bartenders ( a more generous pour) and wait staff which leads them to greet me by name the minute I sit down throughout the cruise.

Just my method

We just completed a Baltic cruise suite class. C/S all gratitudes. Paid

Our cabin steward was kind annoying always around our cabin for the first few days [we did a 15 day cruise]

So my wife told me maybe he is waiting some extra tip we decide and give him $100 We'll that toke care of Him. we never saw him again. Lolll. I think it was a waste of the money .

We tip our butler $200.

He provide us with excellent. Service. Allano Silhouette. Aug.2017

It's just the traditional way to do things.

In the past, tipped positions were all given the tips at the end of the cruise. On our first cruise we had little envelopes to put cash tips into, and I don't recall exactly how many there were but I think it included the room steward, maitre d, head waiter, waiter, beverage waiter, bread waiter and sommelier were included I think. You had to do the calculations yourself, so you added up .50 per day per person for the bread waiter, and put that in the envelope for him. Then 1.50 per day per person for the head waiter, and put that in the envelope for her. I think it took me about a half hour to get it all straight the first time.

Needless to say I love the "tip pool", "service charge", "daily gratuities" or whatever you want to call them that replaced this older cumbersome method.

The traditional idea of a tip is that you are rewarding the person for services already rendered. Another tradition is the "advanced tip" that you might give the maitre D at a trendy restaurant, gambling that your tip amount is better than the next guy's, and you get the right table (or get seated faster). I've always preferred the post-service tip, and that's the way the cruise lines have set it up.

Tipping is entirely up to the individual, of course. Most of us just want to know what's expected so we can follow the local norms without offending the service person.

It is not possible to “pocket” the Auto-grats. It is a series of charges added to the account daily and paid for at the end- one cannot pocket something that at end of cruise doesn’t exist [emoji848]

It is a voluntary charge and “can be removed at the discretion of the passenger” (Celebrity quote in an email)

I certainly wouldn’t tip anyone if for example they didn’t know the difference between a Bloody Mary & a Bloody Caesar.

All chargeable drinks have an 18% compulsory service charge included on the bill.

Some consider this bribery. Like you, I do it for the exponential benefits and exceptional service that comes with the practice. I have never waited for a beverage, seat, answer, etc as I am well known from the beginning.

i get fantastic, friendly service as well [emoji106]

I treat the staff with respect and friendliness but don’t see the need to pay them for doing their job.

each to their own i suppose.
