Car Rental Budget Hilo

Pretty much all of the major rental companies provide shuttles and they are all located at the airport. Make sure you have reservations -- they often sell out of cars and won't pick you up if you aren't on their reservation list.

Harpers is local and located about a quarter mile from the port gate,. We used them last time to rent a 4 x 4 to drive to the top of Mauna Kea. They are the only company that allows their vehicles to do it.

It was a terrific experience. You need to be aware of the possibility of altitude sickness -- the drive is about two hours from sea-level to 14,000 feet. There is a visitor center at 9200 feet where they encourage you to spend an hour to acclimate yourself to the elevation. It was a lot of fun and something to do once

+1 Harper's

ALL the other companies were booked during our holiday cruise a few years ago. We were lucky to get one of Harper's remaining SUVs, and we didn't have to go to the airport. They did p/u and drop off at the port for the very short drive to their Hilo location. Too easy.
