I decided to follow Danish Vikings example to start a new fresh thread for a new year.

The other thread is getting old and it can be hard to find desired info which also could be outdated in some cases.

Getting around.

 

Stockholm have an extensive network of public transport consisting of buses,

trams, subway, commuter trains and harbour ferries.

 

Taxis:

As for taxis only use one of the reputable companies:

Taxi Stockholm, Taxi kurir and Taxi 020.

Make sure the taxis have yellow license plates as well as a yellow sticker

in the rear side windows. The Sticker has valuable price info

and always check the price info on the sticker before going

into a taxi.

From Slussen either switch to bus #76 towards Ropsten, get off at

From Stadsgården S160

Walk to slussen and either go with bus #76 or Djurgårdsfärjan.

 

 

From Strömmen. The ship will be berth at a buoy and you will be tendering

to shore and the drop-off point is at the Slussen quay at Räntmästartrappen

next to Djurgårdsfärjan's berthing location.

 

 

Either go with bus #76 or Djurgårdsfärjan.

 

 

From Skeppsbron S106 (Old Town/Gamla Stan)

Skeppsbron is the quay that goes along the eastern side of Gamla Stan.

Your ship will berth at the lower end of Skeppsbron.

As for Strömmen berths, bus #76 or Djurgårdsfärjan.

 

 

From Frihamnen

Bus #76 towards Norra Hammarbyhamnenm, get off at Djurgårdsbron and

follow the signs to Vasa.

 

 

Or go with Sjövägen harbour boat buses to Allmänna gränd.

From Nynäshamn.

Bus tickets, Important!!

Buses, trams, Sjövägen, commuter trains (and to some extent subway) requires

tickets or travel cards to be bought BEFORE you board the transport.

The only exception is the vintage tram that goes to Skansen during summers.

 

 

Tickets can be bought on various locations in Stockholm, including

cruise ship terminals, tourist offices, 7-eleven shops, Pressbyrån shops and

many other places. Many locations are listed at sl.se but I have found

that their map with the locations are 100% trustable.

April 30th Valborgsmässoafton and also the kings birthday. Semi-holiday

some stores and etc. might close early. At the evening Swedes celebrate

the arrival of the spring with choir song and large bone fires.

 

 

May 1st Labour day and public holiday. Public transport uses Sunday schedule.

Some museums/sights/stores might not be open or might have limited opening hours.

 

 

May 14th Feast of the Ascension. Public holiday Public transport uses Sunday schedule.

May 30th Annual Stockholm Marathon. Large parts of central Stockholm are closes

June 13th Royal wedding for prince Carl Philip and his fiancé.

Parts of the Royal Palace and or the Drottningholm Palace might be unavailable

for tourists a couple of days around the wedding.

 

 

June 19-21st Midsummer weekend. Major public holiday many stores and sights

are closed or have very limited opening hours. Vasa and Skansen are both open as usual.

Large celebrations at Skansen during all three days.

Public transport uses Saturday schedule for midsummers eve and

Sunday schedule for the other two days.

 

 

No more important dates until December

 

 

December 1-24 a living Christmas/Advent calendar in Old Town.

A new ”window” is opened every evening somewhere in the Old Town.

 

 

December 10th Nobel day. City hall and the Stockholm Concert hall

is likely to be inaccessible for tourist for a few days around this day.

 

 

December 13th Lucia day,

 

 

December 24-26th Christmas. Most stores and all museums/etc are closed.

One thing i forgot to mention was the weather/climate.

 

Stockholm like the rest of the Baltic sea region have a very unpredictable weather.

Forecasts longer then 5-10 days ahead are in general very unreliable.

Just remember that there are no certain regarding the weather and there can be quite large differences from one year to another.

In some years (like last year) it's even warmer temperatures on Christmas eve then on Midsummers eve.

You are a real expert! I still have one question. What can you suggest for a girl of 5 ? Yes, we plan to visit Junibacken and Vasa. I guess we will spend quite a time in the first of these two museums. Do you have any other suggestions for a family with a kid of 5? I don’t want to miss something important. Thanks!

Hey jess, what does she like? I don't really know much about what a 5 year old likes.

If she likes animals, Skansen could perhaps be worth visiting?

 

It's quite big but if you focus on the animals it's not that big.

closest bus stop is Danvikstull or Spårvägsmuseet.

 

Get there by going with Djugårdsfärjan to Slussen and from there bus #53 towards

Sure you have to go with commuter train which will take maybe 1 houror so and then change to bus once you get to Stockholm C but in the end it

is not that much difference then berthing in Frihamnen or at the Strömmen buoy.

Thanks D, I just figured that my time I add up the train, bus and ferry rides I could as well

get the Stockholm card and see more than the Vasa museum. But I think that I will take your advice and stick to my original

plan of getting the 24 hour card for 115 Sek. Sam.

 

Basically if you could squeeze in one more thing to see like the Royal Palace that would add another 150SEK to your costs (ice bar excluded)

which would be only around 30SEK (about $3.5USD) short of the Stockholm card value.

 

If your ship leaves at 7pm you probably need to leave Stockholm by 5-5.20 something? Depending on when you have to be at the ship.

 

My recommendation would be to start with Vasa, then head to the ice bar (remember to book a time in advance) then you could Royal Palace followed by the old town.

 

This would mean that you can leave whenever you feel/need to.

From old town you could either walk to the central station or go by bus #53 towards Roslagstull or by any of the northbound subway trains that passes the station.

Also be aware that you will be leaving Stockholm during rush hour so be prepared for that since it will mean that will be very crowded.

I don't know how long/short the queue would be but I would guess that there is a high demand for taxis so pre-booking a taxi is recommended.

You really have gone above and beyond with this wealth of consolidated info. Yet, I'm not going to risk the temptation to ask you "but what about me?" I am there post cruise for almost three full days in mid-June (wed-Sat) and I think I have my tentative plans with weather-related back ups, but it would be wonderful if you can provide your insight. Especially since I'm traveling alone and tend to lose track of time. Plus I'm shy about asking directions to strangers.

 

We arrive on the Marina on June 17 at Frihamnen at 0800, I believe. I would like to then take the bus#1 (is it #1?) to the Frey Hotel by the bus station to drop off luggage. Then would like to catch a city hall tour and climb the tower. After that, hop on the ferry to Drottingholm and spend at least a few hours. Hopefully even catching a theater performance if I'm so lucky. If so, can I still catch a bus back to hotel area if I stay for a performance? Or must I catch the last ferry back if there is no performances? Then I would plan to wander the area near my hotel, maybe take in the ice bar or the Belgium beer bar in my hotel or stroll through Kungstradgarden.

 

Day 2 I would walk through Gamla Stan, visit the Royal Palace and the Armoury, catch the changing of the guard if possible. Then take the ferry from Nybroplan to the Vasa, Nordic Museum, and Skansen for an early evening. Then take the ferry back to Nybroplan and maybe poke around the Grand Hotel and environs or return to my hotel bar.

 

On my last full day, hop on an early ferry (not covered by Stockholm ticket, right?) out to Vaxholm, Grinda, and finally Sandham. Then taking it easy in local neighbors near my hotel for my last night.

 

Last day, up and catch the public (?) bus or Arlanda Express to make a 1230 flight.

 

If I ordered a 72 hour Stockholm card, would it essentially cover all this local travel? (With just a discount on boat to Drottingham and the Arlanda Express and sites I've listed, will it still be worth it? I'd like to just be able to order it in advance and be able to hop on the bus from the cruise terminal with card in hand without first hunting for an ATM and no bus ticket worries.

Yes Blue bus #1 would be the most suitable bus for you to go with to your hotel.

Regarding theatre, the only theatre that I know of that is open during the summer is Parkteatern.

It will start it's summer season on June 4th.Their plays are free to attend and no reservation is needed/possible.

They also have several different locations where they perform and I don't if they will use all of them at all evenings.

Their plays will be in Swedish but perhaps you will enjoy it anyway.

Buses runs very late in the evening so that shouldn't be a problem and I think the buses runs much longer in the evening the ferries.

Also I don't think these ferries (m/s Emelie) from Ressel Rederi are covered by the Stockholm card.

As for the boats that goes out into archipelago you are correct that they are not covered by the Stockholm card.

You also have to realize that Sandhamn is very far out (~50km)

Regarding the departure day, there are public transport to Arlanda.

You basically have two options:

1. commuter train #38 towards, Uppsala C, to Arlanda C. However this means that you have to pay an extra fee since you want to get off at Arlanda.

 

When travelling to or from Arlanda you need an extra ticket for passing the gate at Arlanda C . The passage supplement fee can be paid when you start your journey or at Arlanda C.

 

Option 2. is to go with commuter train #36 to Märsta and change to bus #583 to Arlanda.

I was debating on staying at the hotel near the airport for the night and just take the taxi to the port in the morning OR stay at a hotel close to the port that night. Since It will be our first time in Stockholm, which option will be better? I am looking at Scandic Ariadne near the port. Is it a good hotel? Do we still have to take a cab from the Ariadne hotel to the port?

I think it is a good hotel. It is about a 1.2Km walk from the hotel to Frihamnen.

Sure it is technically possible but there are two things to consider:

 

1. If you arrive on a weekday it is likely that you will arrive during rush hour and the buses/subways doesn't really have that much space for each passenger.

 

2. You will have to change transport at least once since the bus routes that passes Frihamnen does not pass Tegelbacken where the hotel is located.

Our situation: We arrive on Celebrity Silhouette at 9:00 am on Wednesday 27 May, but we will spend that night on the ship and disembark on Thursday May 28, time uncertain. My thoughts were to buy the 3 day travel pass (or maybe the Stockholm card) and spend the 27th sight-seeing using public transportation, returning to the ship that night. I figured that by then we would have enough experience with the buses, etc. that we could decide then whether that was a feasible way of getting to the Sheraton with our luggage on Thursday morning. I ran some scenarios on the SL travel planner link you included. One possibility for us -it looks like Bus 1 goes straight through from Frihamnsgatan to Cityterminalen (på Kungsbron). Does Bus 1 originate at Frihamnsgatan? Of course then we still have to get to the Sheraton from Cityterminalen (på Kungsbron). But that shouldn't be too hard, I hope?

I find no mention of these pre 10 am direct to Vasa trips on the web site for either company.

IIRC, there were a few posters last year who had emailed the HoHo boat operators regarding this and were told that

the HoHo boats would meet the ship when it docked.
