You can't send SMS/MMS texts over the ship's internet unless your phones support wifi calling or you use an alternate messaging app such as WhatsApp. Other messaging services such as iMessage or Facebook messenger will work. If you want to just send "regular" SMS texts, you can do so over the ship's cellular system (Cellular at Sea) but you will pay international roaming charges. For texts, most carriers charge $0.50 per sent text. If you use the ship's cellular system, make sure you turn data off. Data charges can run up a very big bill.

No. Whatsapp works on wifi. It is just that it works across platforms. Not everyone has to have the same type of cell phone.

When the ship is in port and you can get that countries signal you can call text or WhatsApp at the countries rate which can be expensive unless you have a package on your phone with your provider.

I'm from England and my provider EE let's me have everything all inclusive with my UK package.
