NCL new builds. Oceania also???

Just read that NCL has ordered 4 new ships with options for 2 more. Is their any info. about the possibility on new ships for Oceania? Would be great. I think I remember there was an option for a third O ship but it was not picked up. At the rate they are going (good) I think they could fill another ship. We can always wish. :):):)

I'm an optimist and would love to see a new ship for Oceania as well, and I seem to remember them saying when the Sirena was just a glint in FDR's eye that four R ships was enough.

That said, I believe that the newbuilds which you read about involve an increase in the number of Global class ships which NCL parent company Star Cruises is building for the Asian market.

Stars' entire Superstar Class ( Pisces, Virgo, Leo, Libra, Aquarius, Gemini and Aires) were gradually reworked to sail for NCL over the last 25 years, but the massive cost of overhauling them (Asians insist on all smoking vessels, massive casino's and smaller, different soft furnishings than the American market), means that they cannot be switched back, easily

I think that 4 R Class ships are enough, but I would like to see 1 or 2 more O Class ships.

Don't quote me ... I'm just recollecting.

 

But it seemed to me that talk about a new "O" class ship was before Sirena came into the fleet. O spent a lot of money refurbishing her which may well have delayed any newer ships ...

 

Just a guess, I'm no expert here.

 

Maybe they need to see how all the ships are selling before they opt for yet another ...

I think what O needs more than new ships are new itineraries.

Sometimes it seems they have trouble filling the ships they already have - hence all the promos.

Conversely, when a new itinerary appears, it sells like hot cakes. Just thinks how fast they sold the first Australia circumnavigation and the current all Cuba cruises. People who have been sailing on O for some time now have done most of them and are tired of the same old/same old itineraries - at least I am.

That is what I think O really needs.

My knee jerk reaction is to agree, Paul-

I'm sure you remember that almost 7 years ago, FDR sponsored a "Create an Itinerary" Contest, here on the Oceania Board.

 

First Prize was a free cruise on the Itinerary chosen as "Best", and I remember it very well because my best cruise buddy, the late Don Horner (Hondorner on these boards) won for his brilliant Exotic Alaska Cruise.

These are the 5 finalist itineraries from that Contest in 2009, do any of them still appeal?:.

 

Iceland and Greenland

Reykjavik - Akureyri - Isafjordur - Cape Farewell Passage - Qaqortoq - Iluissat - Disko Bay - Nuuk - Cobh - Plymouth - Dover

 

Iberia, Africa and the Riviera

I do remember it very well. It was an exciting concept and I also remember how disappointed I was when my 2 - obviously best itineraries :D - didn't win.

Apparently it was a great idea as most of those ports are being visited today. That said, I can suggest some others for now:

1 Northwest Passage Greenland to Alaska or v.v. (done by Crystal & Regent but I would prefer it on Oceania)

2 Circumnavigation of all Japanese Islands (currently done by Princess, but...)

3 WWII Pacific theater islands (Guam, Palau, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, etc)

I could go on but you get the idea :)

I'll sign up for your #2 & #3 now. We got just a taste of Japan on ATW16 and have looked for an O cruise of Japan...none really exists. I'd love to do a circumnav of Japan. (Mr. Wonderful has been to Japan more than once but it was for business--so he hasn't seen much either!!)

 

Also count us in for a speciality cruise of Pacific WWII islands and bring a couple of speakers on board who can remind us of where we're visiting and what happened there. We tried to do as much WWII on ATW as we could.

 

Several of us on ATW16 met with an O rep to tweak the ATW19 itinerary. We'll see!

My itinerary did not win either but I see they are doing part of it now :D

 

I vote for a new ship when the time comes

Getting the thread back to ships, what do the R and O class ships not offer that you would want in a new build? Or do the proponents of a new build want just another newly built O class ship?

 

IMO the R class are just about perfect. Great size, enough amenities, easy to get about and actually look like attractive ships.

Both classes are great, but just want a new O class ship. It has been a few years and I am sure they can find things to improve on without changing the size. Also more places to chose from on a cruise.

The O class cost $380,000,000 each to build. To design a new ship, rather than just build another of an established design, costs approximately 10% of the construction cost. Assuming O would want to stick with a ship of comparable size, structure, physical plant as an O class the cost would now run around $440,000,000 or $350,000 per berth. A "previously owned" R class costing $100,000,000 plus $50,000,000 for refurbishment would cost about $220,000 per berth. Granted there are other costs/revenue benefits associated in penciling out the business model of a ship (depreciation, amortization, size of crew, on board sales, etc.) but a new build of a new design is a very expensive proposition. Perhaps this is why O didn't build a third "O class" and opted instead for the Sirena.

Sounds to me another O class ship would be an established design, not a new design. What am I not seeing here?

This is often true. However, all 3 of my itineraries have been done (or are being done) by other cruise lines - so that is not an issue here. Pacific WWII cruise was offered in the past by Princess (on one of their R ships, no less).

As far as the new ship goes - we all know it would cost a lot of money. We also know that it would be us and not the cruise line that would pay for it one way or another. Either higher rates for cruises or cut backs in amenities (food, service, etc) or some other creative ways.

I don't want either of those options.

I think what you are missing here is where the money would come from to pay for this new ship. They usually wind up costing a lot more than the initial estimate.

As I pointed out above, in the end it would be the customers that would pay for the ship in one way or another.

NCL is in the business of making money, not losing it.

I am sorry, but I don't think you understand how business gets done in most places. Where did the money come from to build Marina , the Riviera, and the 4 ships that NCL is building? They borrow it. Gets paid back as the ships do their new cruises. Same prices as before, same markup, just more sailings to take in more revenue. Every company when building new stores, factories etc. borrows the money and pays it back from future revenues. I believe FDR borrowed most of the money used to start Oceania and look where we are now. I am sure Oceania is making money. Sure hope so. Please re think your post. No disrespect intended.
