Berlin dining suggestions

Will be spending 4 days in Berlin prior to cruise and am seeking any restaurant suggestions/recommendations in Berlin. Not needing "fine dining" and trendy, just good food and comfortable atmosphere.

These are ones I've eaten at and been happy with, all near the Spree on the old East Berlin side : Restaurant 1840 in Hackesheir Markt, Brauhaus Georgebrau, and a restaurant a block back from Georgebrau whose name I can't recognize in Google maps but it was in the middle of three restaurants in a courtyard. There is also a line of restaurants in the Heiligegeistkirchplatz (next to the Radisson Blu and the Aquadom). You can wander thru there and find many selections. Also if you wander around Hackesheir Markt, choices abound. All fit your comfy criterion.

We were last in Berlin six years ago, but I am happy to agree with CharTrav about the Georgbrau http://brauhaus-georgbraeu.de/en/. I also highly recommend Dicke Wirtin, which means "the fat innkeeper" on Savigny Platz http://dicke-wirtin.de/ (website mostly in German with a bit of English at the bottom). We especially recommend Dicke Wirtin as a comfy spot for your first night! I also affirm the recommendation for Hackesheir Markt. Ah, the memories! We love Berlin.

Don't know about the food, but if you want a spectacular view, you can try the restaurant on top of the old East Berlin television tower. It's 207 meters (680 feet) above Berlin. I ate there in 1972, when it was still under Russian control. It was very orderly. As the restaurant revolved around the kitchen hub, orders were taken at one place, food served at another, table cleared, and finally you paid up--in and out in exactly an hour!

That's the Berliner Furnsehturm. I don't know about the food either, but in 1999, on our first trip to Berlin, my husband and I went there for a drink. Afterwards, we went to Zur letzen Instanz zurletzteninstanz.com/ which is not far from there for dinner. Zur letzen Instanz is the oldest restaurant in Berlin (1621).

Another place to try out in the very old with lots of history category is Clärchens Ballhaus (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cl%C3%A4rchens_Ballroom). The standards group I'm part of held its chairs dinner there during its quarterly meeting in 2015. Good food and ambiance. We also met in Berlin during 2013. There are so many things to see and do in the city, but if you have the time/inclination - we really enjoyed the Berlin Underground Tour.

I am a huge fan of Berlin.

We always go at least once to Fischkutter on the gourmet floor at KaDeWe for very fresh and well prepared seafood.

For casual Vietnamese, Monsieur Vuong in Mitte is a good choice. Always busy.

Berlin has many very good Italian restaurants. Bocca di Bacco is very good; the food is delicious and fresh. It is on Friedrichstrasse in Mitte.

It will be my first visit, but Chris' second. However, when she was last there, the wall was still up, so these updated dining recommendations will be very helpful! Thanks all.

JP, I highly recommend you purchase the Berlin Welcome Card with Museum Island. It is a great value and includes almost all public transport in Berlin. There are three "zones" and you can choose depending on where you plan to visit.

DH and I have been to Berlin 6 times and love the city. I was there as a student when the wall was up and then back over the years before my trips with DH.

If the Pergamon has the Great Altar of Zeus and Athena re-opened, do not miss it! Truly amazing.

Also, I recommend coffee and cake (DH loves the strudel) around 4 in the cafe on top of the Reichstag building. You need reservations in advance.

If you like food, do not miss the gourmet floor at KaDeWe.

Fabulous city and just typing this I am trying to figure out how soon we can get back!
