We have booked a 3 nighter on the Ventura to give my mother in law a taste of cruising. I was wondering if there would be a formal night or not. Also my hubby is a smoker where would be a good place to book a balcony cabin so he can quickly pop off to indulge (ideally avoiding bars as I want him back withing 3hrs) he does not mind going up or down a couple of flights of stairs.

There should be a formal night on this cruise and this may be confirmed on the P&O website as they split all individual cruises down to how many formal nights are scheduled and also any evening themes.

Smoking is permitted on the starboard side of all open decks on Ventura, i.e. Promenade Deck (Deck 7), Lido Deck (Deck 15) and on the Terrace Bar Area (Aft area Decks 14/15).

So recommendations for a smoker who can ascend a few stairs: Lido Deck (Deck 15) any cabin, flat approach to smoking nearby smoking area, E Deck (Deck 8) any starboard cabin, but near one of the three stairway areas, one deck descent to access Promenade Deck (Deck 7) or finally and quite a good overall location Riviera Deck (Deck 14) starboard as near to the Aft as possible because there is a "Secret Door" right at the far end of the corridor aft not shown on the Deck Plans but always open that gets you out onto the Terrace Bar area, about six/seven steps up to the smoking area starboard. This latter location is ideal for Baytree Restaurant and many other food and bar options.

Smoking on balconies is prohibited as well as all internal areas, thankfully.

But you may smoke as mentioned earlier and this includes covered areas so rain will not affect you completely just limit the options.
