Just back from the Legend

We are just back from a week on the Legend in the Caribbean. Overall the experience was excellent. I will write an indepth review shortly, hopefully with pictures. This was our first Windstar and we are hooked. No more big ships for us.

The perfect way to enjoy the BVI and smaller islands.

More to come later today

Cheers

Really looking forward to your review as we will be doing this same itinerary in January. I know some of the ports (Cluebra & Montserrat in particular) are new to Windstar...how did you feel about them?

Anything else you can point out would be greatly appreciated. This is not our first Windstar but of course, the first for Star Legend (we did sail on her when she was owned by Seabourn)

Again, glad to hear you had wonderful cruise.

Good morning. I will break the review down into a couple different posts so that it is not too long or boring. Quick background, Mary (49) and myself (55) from Atlanta, GA., on Windstar for the first time. 30 plus cruises but only a couple on the smaller (less than 600 pax) ships. We have been to most of the islands in the Carib but this cruise offered a couple of new stops. The cruise was 7 days, San Juan - Isla Culebra, St. Barths, Monseratt, St Martin, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda.

For the seasoned veteran Windstar folks, this review will probably not enlighten you very much except for the ports of call and excursions. For any new Windstar folks, hope it helps a bit.

Embarkation in San Juan was a breeze. 20 minute cab ride from airport ($30 US), they use the pier in Old San Juan (so if you wanted to walk around or needed something from the CVS across the street it was simple). Porter took the luggage, walked us through security. We watched our bags being put onboard as we walked up the gangway, proceeded to check-in in the lounge and basically never stopped. As we exited the lounge a room steward (our actual steward for the week) greeted and took us to room 137. Our luggage was sitting there as we walked in the room (AMAZING). Honestly from the time we got IN the cab to where we were unpacking in our room was less than 40 minutes.

Lifeboat drill at 4:15. Everyone brings your life vest to Deck 7 for muster and then breaks into 4 groups. This is when we started meeting folks and basically the party started for the week. Simple Muster drill and 30 minutes later we are at the Star Bar ordering cocktails.

It took the OUTSTANDING bar staff maybe an hour to know our names and our favorite beverage (we had the beverage package - SO SMART AND EASY), and after that I hardly ever had to tell them what we wanted, just when we wanted another. 2 thumbs up for Edison and Lyn at the Star Bar.

Dinner was at 7. We had a wonderful round banquet table near the front and a fantastic server named Endro. Meal was good, not exceptional but this is not a 5 star restaurant. We were both very satisfied and the service was again OUTSTANDING.

After dinner we went to the lounge area where 1 of the 2 music duo's were performing. Splash is a duo from England that may have been the highlight of the cruise. Young couple that had great energy and allows wanted to please the passengers. All types of music for every generation (well, probably not the 20 or 30 somethings, but there were only 2 couples that fit that profile on the entire ship).

We did get an announcement from the Captain that a group was arriving late due to aircraft issues and our sailaway would be delayed. We stayed awake until 12:30 am but still tied up. As we went to our room we passed a Security Officer that stated it was not a passenger issue (the late arriving folks were given a police escort from the airport and were on board by midnight), but rather it was a rudder problem and we would not be leaving for a couple more hours.

We did set sail around 2:30 am.

Isla Culebra. Picturesque little bay. We were the only ship. Small pier with about a 5 or 6 minute tender ride. Plenty of taxi's at the pier area. $3 per person to go to the Flamenco (sp??) beach area. Other folks rented a 4 person golf cart for about $35 and roamed all over the island (only 2 roads so you can't get lost). Beach was nice but not great. Weather was overcast and then rainy. We left after about an hour. Lunch back on ship and then down to the Sports Platform as the sun came back out.

Another highlight of the cruise was the Sports Platform. Lovely young lady named Jennelle in charge. She would ask that each person do a small swim test with a life vest first to see if they were a competent swimmer (some folks were rude about this but then a couple of folks could not swim very well and she had to literally get in and drag them back due to strong current. She handled it professionally).

We played on the platform area that included a water trampoline, couple of floating mats and kayaks. She would start closing up around 3:30 each day.

St. Barths. Here is where the cruise went off the rails for a bit. One of the tenders broke down and it messed up all of the excursions and just getting ashore. We were booked on a sailing catamaran and ended up being 1.5 hours late getting started since folks could not get to shore. The Cat tour was fun. Easy walk on the Quay to the Cat, just 50 feet or so. Sailed west to a secluded bay, snorkeled for about 45 minutes, sailed back to the harbor going by the other ships and even in to Shell Beach to wait for the quay to clear. Only 12 passengers on the Cat so LOTS of room. Served beer, rum punch and soft drinks. Only food was a bowl of potato chips and some nuts so don't expect a meal. Some folks stayed in town for lunch ($28 cheese burger - YIKES) and some easy shopping right next to the quay. We went back to the ship and again back to the Water Platform. Overall fun day.

Montserrat. This island is trying so hard to recover from the volcano. The Activity Director did hire an additional tender since the ship was limited to just 1 working. This helped quite a bit. We did the Buried City tour and it was extremely Sobering. The devastation to the volcanic area was beyond imagination. Most of the island is a beautiful lush tropical island, they just don't have the population or skilled labor to fully recover yet. Windstar was the first cruise ship in several months and has committed to help the island.

Our little excursion was in 10 to 15 passenger vans. Long road to the Buried City area, then after that, back to a shaded pavilion at a volcanic beach area (black sand that was awesome) and a light lunch. Back on the ship around 2. The water platform not in use that day as they were working on the tender and the current was very strong.

Part 2 of excursions to come.

St Marteen - Marigot. Thankfully the ship was in Marigot instead of Phillipsburg since there were 3 mammoth ships docked over there. Again, a hired tender to help get ashore (much more skilled than the Windstar Tender staff, but I will get to that part later). We did not have a tour, just went to town, walked around to shop but we are NOT good shoppers. Walked up to the Fort overlooking the harbor (hint hint, stop by the Catholic Church on the way and exit through the side Narthex, there are steps that lead right to the entrance to the stairs to the fort, saves a longer walk, just be respectful).

Back to the ship for lunch and yep - more fun on the water sports platform (can see a trend here???)

Jost Van Dyke. Cute little island with lots of rented sailboats and catamarans in the harbor. Another hired Tender for the day thank goodness. All morning excursions were moved to the afternoon - YAY, sleep late. We booked a "sail and snorkel" tour. A bit disappointing. 30 folks on an old motor Catamaran with a crew that was less than helpful. Mary and I did fine but folks that needed help with equipment and getting into the water had trouble. Half the group did not even try the 2nd snorkel stop.

First stop was Sandy Spit. Coral area is dead and nothing to see. Swim to the Spit was hard and a couple of ladies had to be "assisted" back to the Cat. Second stop was in a small lagoon next with better stuff to see but nothing to write home about. Then the party started.

They took the Cat over to a dock at Foxy's Tabboo bar. Since Jost is known for it beach bars most of the group started to enjoy. 30 minutes or so at the bar then a short ride back to the pier. Instead of going back to the ship 8 of us took a taxi over the hill to Soggy Dollar Bar (don't walk unless you are REALLY REALLY in good shape). The ride was $20 per couple with tip. The taxi waited for us at Soggy Dollar. We watched the sunset on the beach and of course enjoyed the PainKiller and BushWacker cocktails = easy to over indulge so be careful.

Late sailway that night so no problem getting a tender back to the ship for dinner. LOTS and LOTS of fun on the island - the snorkeling was just ok.

Last but not least - Virgin Gorda. The north sound of Virgin Gorda is in my opinion one of the most beautiful areas of the BVI. There were mega yachts next to Windstar that seemed almost as big as the Legend. 2 ship tours that day, 1 to the Baths and 1 on power boats to go around the island. We did neither since we had done this before. The folks that went to the Baths stated that it was a bit too long and not as enjoyable as they hoped. The folks on the fast boats around the island had a blast.

We opted to have a late breakfast and then head to shore for the Island Lunch/Picnic. It was the only time all week that you had to get going early to get a good spot under an umbrella on the beach, but in reality I never once sat down on our beach chair so it could have been on the last row and it would have been fine.

Fantastic Day. By day 6 you know almost everyone on the boat. Not every group co-mingled (some groups just liked to stay to themselves) but basically just one big outdoor picnic and fun time in the Sun. Mary finally paddleboarded (Jennelle had warned her all week that the current was always to strong and to just wait for Friday in Virgin Gorda and she was correct.)

The BBQ was good, but honestly the most fun was just standing in knee deep water with a cocktail in hand enjoying the company of the other passengers.

Overall the excursions and the stops were very good. The Tender situation put a damper on the logistics and since this is a new itinerary, Windstar needs a couple of weeks to iron out some kinks and maybe even upgrade a few of the tour operators, but they will figure it out soon enough. We were very pleased and would do this same itinerary again, just with a few different tours (probably more on our own with local guides).

The following is just my opinion and not meant as expert analysis. The Hotel side of Star Legend is far and away better than the Engineering side.

The best aspects of the cruise were basically associated with the Hotel side of the ship. Room, Dining, Entertainment, Tours and Bar Service.

Our room was the lowest category but I thought it was fantastic. Plenty of room, no external noise, very clean, and a wonderful steward (JaJat). Bed was good, pillows were unique (large, square, firm but I slept fine). A small Bose speaker with Blue Tooth capability to my tablet allowed us to have Pandora music in our cabin each night as we were getting ready for dinner (nice touch). Never used the mini bar. Water was hot when needed. As always a couple of things would have made it a bit better. The shower head is in a corner instead of on the side wall so it made for a strange way to shower even though it was a big bath tub. Also, there is only one 110 outlet and it is no where near the bed, so I was lucky to have brought an extension cord for my CPAP machine (stinks getting old). Other than that, no complaints with the room.

Dining - Breakfast and Dinners were VERY good. We never had a problem getting a table for 2 at breakfast and almost always on the rail. Good, efficient service and wonderful selections from the menu as well as a wide variety buffet. Dinner was similar. We never waited to be seated. 2 nights we were with a larger group and they accommodated perfectly. Meal selections were good but not overwhelming. The Risotto and the Tuna were favorites. Soups were good. Appetizers were hit or miss. Desserts were a bit disappointing but I am happy with just Vanilla Ice Cream and once Endro understood that aspect, it was always ready for me. Coffee was good but very strong. Cheese course was excellent, but you had to request.

Insert a comment about Candles Dinning Room. We only ate there one night and actually was a bit disappointed. Main issue was the noise. With the canopy over the dining area, the sound from surrounding table was VERY loud. We also we seated next to a group of 6 that were very loud and obnoxious (but you could have that happen anywhere I guess, it just took away from the experience). We never asked to go back and could care less about that dining area.

Entertainment. One Duo was OUTSTANDING and the other was disappointing. This was the only entertainment on the entire ship. No shows or anything and that is PERFECT for us. We danced every night under the stars with the Splash Duo (big shout out to Dave & Tori). The on board Deck BBQ night was quite fun and entertaining even if it did rain at the end. Quite a late night that evening.

Tours/Excursions. I talked about each stop earlier, but wanted to state that the Activity Staff worked very hard all week and were certainly blindsided by the Tender problem but recovered as well as possible.

Beverage Service. 5 Star service all week. These folks worked so hard, always with a smile but never pushy. They knew our names very early and were courteous and professional the entire week. If I wanted to try a new drink one night they would make suggestions or just say, "Mr. Mark are you ready for your Absolut and Tonic and Ms. Mary would you like your Chardonnay now?" They also always seemed happy to just bring a glass of ice water when needed. Hats off to the Beverage Service Staff (Edison, Lyn, Bobby, John, Rea, etc etc etc)

Now for the Engineering side of the business. This is where Star Legend needs help. Not sure if undermanned or undertrained or just not very good at their job. Tender operations were embarrassing. Never enough staff to help when a tender was trying to tie up or about to leave. Very slow in how they worked and just not very efficient.

I tend to blame this on management and Senior Staff. The most important aspect of a passenger ship is being able to handle getting passengers on and off the ship and Star Legend scored poorly on this operation. The only overall disappointing aspect of the entire cruise and one that can be easily fixed with proper management and training. I hope they work on this situation quickly.

Mary and I are pretty easy going and could get around the tendering guffaws but a loud majority of the passengers were VERY upset with this part of the operation.

Again, all this is just my opinion and I believe it can and will be rectified.

Getting off the ship at the end of the cruise was almost as easy as coming aboard at the beginning. We were told all ashore by 8:30 am. Typical program as most cruise ships where you put our your luggage night before so no big deal. Breakfast was lighter than normal but again the service was still there and just as fantastic.

Small line at Reception to retrieve your passport around 7:30 am. Somewhere around 7:45 or 8:00 they were stating that all was ready and we could disembark. Just a short walk down the gangway, luggage was right their in several lines, we retrieved our roller bags and proceeded to Customs (just 1 lady officer but very efficient), walked right out to a line of cabs. We were at the airport ready to check in by 8:30 (now if only Delta had been as efficient as Windstar - they changed our plane to one with 3 less rows of First Class seats and we were bumped out - but that is another story for another time).

Some other comments.

Lunch. Honestly I was a bit disappointed in the lunch menu. The Buffet line was ok, always plenty of fresh fruit, cheeses and bread, but the main course was just a bit off. Cheeseburger one day was a processed previously frozen patty. The main sandwich another day was very blah. Just a bit lacking.

On the other hand, the Yacht Club food/beverage center was a nice treat. Small sandwiches at lunch, fresh light breakfast items in the morning and always coffee. Nice escape if you wanted a snack.

CAVEAT - again the following is just MY opinion.

Aside from the Tender operation, my main uncomfortable criticism of the Cruise was our Captain. He is new to Windstar and maybe typical of the type of Captain aboard the other Windstar vessels but he was a bit un-professional in my opinion. When he spoke at the Captain's reception, he tried to make a couple of jokes (unsuccessful), kept pacing back and forth with his head down and just was not making a lot of sense (I guess I was expecting the more ramrod "Captain" of the ship). He also had a tendency to make his way to the Star Bar at the end of the evening for a cocktail or 2 and would then proceed to retrieve his Acoustic guitar from his cabin and perform. I understand that guest interaction with the Captain is a Windstar "plus" however this seemed odd. Nothing harmful, just "different".

Oh well, none of this "ruined my cruise" and we will certainly sail again on Windstar. The positives far outnumbered any criticisms and we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise. Highly recommend this ship and this line.

Hope the review was not too boring. If you have any specific questions about the itinerary or things in general, I would be happy to assist.

Cheers (and until our next Windstar sailing....)

Mark

Hi, thank you for your in depth report. You sound like a very happy and grateful person and your report was nicely upbeat. We are also WS fans and I read an interesting comment you made which befuddles me. For the life of me I can not understand how anyone can be rude to someone trying to keep them safe ie., the safety mini swim test. Sailed my entire life, was a lifeguard in my college years, live on the water always have, 19 WS's, we appreciate the safety. I swim every day for excerise and I am a good swimmer and I would applaud a swim test. On the water, safety first and a respect for the sea. I have swam off the swim platforms and the currents have been strong, I proudly wear a life jacket, sometimes I tether myself, I follow directions of the staff and do so with an appreciation. What I liked about your report was you nicely put how WS could improve. Happy you had such a lovely time. We did as well on the Star Breeze having never been on the motor yachts. It was a repositioning not much water time but nevertheless a great experience. Happy Sailing.

PS. You mentioned our favorite barman Bobby, been on about 10 cruises with him. Great staff member.

Great review. Thanks. We're on Legend this week. Today St Barths. Tender still broken. They are working round the clock and contracting with 3rd parties to make all the ports except capt said they couldn't get anyone in Culbera so they changed port this week to st thomas. That's the big shopping mecca. They did offer tours and the people who went on cat and snorkeling had great time. We went on 3 hour "best of St thomas " and it was pretty bad. One tourist trap after another. Aside from the port change this is great cruise and lovely ship. Staff is just as good as Surf and Spirit. Food really top notch, suites are spacious and, again, wonderful crew. Missed the sails the first night along with other passengers who also are repeats BUT there is so much good on this ship that it's no big deal. Public rooms spacious. Spa top drawer. All of the concerns we had moving from sail to ship over except they neec to find different sail away music. It's NOT the sailing ships and 1492 sounded goofy to the "old timers".

Thank you for the nice reply. Agree completely with your comments about the Water Platform. Mary and I are both strong swimmers, our Daughter was All American swimmer in college so we have been around swimming a long time. Gladly took the little test to prove we were sea-worthy. It was the folks that are use to water aerobics at the local YMCA that complained the most and then had trouble once in the water (if you get my drift)

Bobby was great, except another man on board looked a lot like me so he would get us confused. Edison was constantly making fun of him having to correct himself and ask our room number. It was a lot of fun.

We had a fantastic time and look forward to several more experiences on Windstar.

Sorry you missed Culebra, it is much more quaint than St Thomas (wink wink). Mary won the Free Spa massage the first night's drawing so she experienced the Spa. I never stepped foot inside.

Agree completely that the common rooms and state rooms are fresh and clean and very spacious.

The raising of the little flag in place of the main sails did seem a bit odd but some of the repeaters would stand there every night (some would close their eyes as if watching the sails being raised). Guess we will have to try one of those ships one day to see what the fuss is about.

Say hi to Tori and Dave from the "Dancing Couple" from last week. Also our best to Jennelle, the hardest working woman on the ship.

Cheers

Sounds like a great time...I do hope the tender situation gets resolved before our late January sailing...I would be "put out" to say the least if Culebra was swapped for St Thomas or anywhere else for that matter...it's one of the ports I am most looking forward to.

Also happy to hear the bar service was good...on our last Windstar cruise I would have reviewed as mediocre...but after a few rum drinks in the beautiful Caribbean, who really cares?

Will say hello to all this evening. They are hard workers, all of them. We had dinner with Calvin DSouza the hotel manager last night. Lovely man and I will pass on your compliments. Hint about CPAP. There actually is a 110 outlet next to the bed but it requires prong converter. It has 3 holes so it didnt look like a 110 but our cabin steward was down this road before. We carry a prong converter in the case. Made by Insignia. Bought it at best buy a few years ago. It doesn't convert current but also used it in Europe and on the Surf as CPAPs generally take any current. It also simultaneously charges phone with USB. Have 2 and don't travel without them. So on our way to Yacht Club for a latte. Captain is a bit of a showman but very capable. He leaves when we do this week for a couple of months home. I figured out shower head. It can be adjusted with some work. Happy holidays to y'all.

Nicely done review and enjoyed the photos. Except the last one suggests that the Legend left without you

We've been to the USVI's several times and have always wanted to do a Windstar trip to the BVI's. Your review has just made us want it a bit more.

Question. What was the currency when in the British Virgin Islands; British Sterling or US Dollars?

Tiki_Man is a great example of why most people enjoy cruises. His positive attitude is contagious.

When you know how to enjoy yourself the few little things that may not always be as one expected have a tendency to get brushed aside in laughter. I very much enjoyed his review of the Legend.

I've sailed on the Windstar Pride (one of the Legend's sister ships) and several times aboard her as the Seaborne Pride. Like the Pride, it sounds like the Legend is in good hands too. That said, we've just booked the Legend for a Med cruise next Fall. Sounds like we won't be disappointed.
