This is a good idea for those touring on their own in Halifax or Saint John,

This year in honor of Canada's 150th Birthday admission to National Parks across Canada is free.

You can order a Discovery pass at https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/ns/h...it/tarifs-fees.

This includes Halifax Citadel which is right in downtown Halifax: http://pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/ns/halifax

And in Saint John - Carleton Martello Tower, though you cannot go inside due to restoration work, only tour the grounds and visitor center. http://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/nb/carleton

Thanks for the information. Just ordered my pass for our New England/Canada cruise in September.

Do you actually need the pass for the free admission? I'm unclear because it looks and is described as something you hang from your review mirror in the car, and we'd be tourists on foot or by taxi.

Good question. I just sent them an email to verify. Will post the response!

The pass can be picked up in person upon arrival at any participating Parks Canada location, or at the partner locations listed on http://www.pc.gc.ca/en/voyage-travel/admission/endroits-locations. You will still need pass even if you arrive on foot.

Please note: you can also reach the Parks Canada National Information Service toll-free at 1-888-773-8888 in North America or 819-420-9486 for international callers. We are open 7 days/week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EDT.

With regards,

Just curious, What is the cost to enter the Citadel without a pass?

We just returned from the New England/Canada cruise. Drove to Citadel and they charge $3.15 for parking. We had the pass so we didn't need to pay for admission. I was told that the admission cost was $11 during the summer season however I think admission will be free even without the park pass in celebration of Canada's 150th Birthday. Citadel is a must-see so make sure to visit.

Looks like you can pick up the pass at the visitor's center in Halifax on the waterfront if you forget your pass or don't order in time for your cruise.

Unless you're going in anyway for something else don't bother as they'll give you one at the Citadel or any other Parks Canada property.

We're quite annoyed at the incredible inefficiency in the way this has been run; it took literally days of repeated attempts to register online and then we've been actually physically handed a pass by every Parks Canada desk monkey we've seen since without even asking for one! All our friends who applied in advance have had the same experience across the country. The cost of processing and mailing them has been a total waste of time and money.

I have the feeling that this started out with the government thinking we should all pre-order passes, but at some point they decided to make it much easier for everyone and issue them on the spot. I am surprised I have not read any commentary about this.

That thought had crossed our minds too, but we also thought 'why no press release then?' as you'd imagine any gov't that actually changes a policy which does make life easier for Joe Q Public would be shouting it from the rooftops... so we went back to 'sheer dumbassery on the part of Parks Canada' as the likeliest reason;)
