Transatlantic Luggage Allowance

We're booked on Britannia from Southampton to the Caribbean in October. My question is, I know the luggage allowance is dictated by the flight home (so 23 kgs) but I'm not sure how this would work if we're over that weight? My understanding is that our cases will be taken the night before, and that we won't see them again until we arrive at Gatwick. If they weigh over the limit, how do I pay the excess at the airport?

Don't worry about it, they don't weigh them for the flight back.

Except I'm such a worrier I probably wouldn't risk it - they might confiscate my case if it's over 😱

Always been over on the way back and as others have said they just take them from outside your cabin and magically they arrive back in the UK same time as you.We take an extra case on TA's now as all they ask is how many cases you are checking in on return flight and then give you enough luggage labels accordingly. How good is that? I was a bit worried about keeping to the limit as we need to pack for English Autumn for a few days, Caribbean sun and of course evening wear including Formal. Now I won't have to be quite so careful!
