Luggage

There will be luggage tags either sent to you or you can print them out (depends on cruiseline)and when you arrive at the terminal you hand your large suitcases to a porter and the suitcase will show up at your cabin a few hours later. Most people hang on to their carry-on which will go thru a scanner like at the airport. You can check your carry on but you should keep items of value, important papers, electronics and medications with you in case your suitcase gets lost. Most people just lug their carry on with them

I agree with all that has been said.

Be certain to place in your carry on and for females a purse important items including electronics, valuables such as jewelry and money and passports and medications and not have them in your checked luggage so that you keep them with you at all times.

You drop your checked luggage at the cruise terminal, it will arrive at your cabin door later in the day.

Or at least it will as long as your cabin number is on each piece ;)

Your carry-on should be small enough to fit through an airport-security-size scanner, though there are exceptions.

Your cabin will probably be available around 1pm to 2pm, until then you have to look after your carry-on.

So what to keep in your carry-on will vary according to circumstances:

Definitely your paperwork, c/cards, passports if applicable, cash, valuables, phone/I-pad or other tablets, medications.

And your patience and sense-of-humour. ;)

Other things might include:

Permitted drinks & any other breakables (dock luggage handlers aren't known for their gentle touch.)

A change of clothes - mebbe swimwear etc to relax by the pool if you're quite early, or mebbe something suitable for dinner if you're quite late because your luggage might not show in time, though folk vary from casual to downright crumpled and travel-worn on the first night. Or mebbe just "some" fresh clothes if you've had a long journey to port.

But bear in mind that you'll be hauling your carry-on with you til your cabin is available. OK if you want to relax in a bar, not so good if you want to explore the ship.

Some elevators won't be available because they'll be commandeered by the crew for shifting baggage.

Other than those "definites", the mix between checked & carry-on is up to you and the circumstances.

BTW

- a word on behalf of the luggage handlers & crew who have to schlepp your luggage through the ship. Try to keep any bag to 50 lbs or less. Two 40lb cases are easier for them than one 80lb case.

- whenever we travel we tend to cross-pack or bags. Not because we're cross-dressers :p, but in case one bag goes missing. Not the same problem with cruises as it is with flights, because your bags will definitely be on the ship somewhere.

NCL will have a lounge available (ask a crew member) on one of the decks where you can drop of any carry on stuff you don't want to drag around with you. Just like a hat check you will be given a claim ticket so you can pick it up later before the muster drill.
