Warnemunde to Rostock and back???

I asked this question on my roll call but I am not sure if the person I asked is allowed to answer. So here, goes:

We have decided just to take the boat ride from Warnemunde to Rostock and back. We want to visit the Old Town in Rostock. Can you tell me how far that is from the pier? Any good pubs you would recommend near Old Town or the market for lunch and a couple of brews? We have heard here on Cruise Critic that Zur Kogge is a nice old pub by the water, true?

Thanks for any help you might provide,

Tom

Glad you asked. sorry I cannot recommend a pub, but we did do the ferry from Warnemunde to Rostock and back. The ferry is not very far from where the ship docks. the exact directions I cannot give you, but if you see Heinblod anywhere around on these boards, he can give exact directions. He did it for me. In all reality you will not get lost as the ferries leave right from the harbor area, so follow the crowd and you will find it. Not all the boats are those ferries, just look for the sign for the one going to Rostock.

The ride is nice, not the best of scenery, but it is pleasant. about 1/2 hour to 40 minutes each way. One one leg they did a running commentary of what we were passing, but it was all in German, so we spent the time admiring the views. We did pick up that they were making a lot of sarcastic comments about our ship (the Jewel) when they past it, as many of the Germans were snickering.

Warnemunde is an OK town.

after we returned on the ferry (be sure to check the last times the ferry returns,as it was fairly early {like 3 ish}) we walked down to the beach area and hung around the lighthouse area.

Rostock is a nice little town. Very European in look, and quite a few nice shops. As for attractions, there were some, but we spent the day walking around, stopping for some delicious pastries, and doing some shopping. They have quite a few book stores where we bought some great German calendars as gifts.

Here are a few or my pix of Warnemunde and Rostock to give you an idea of what's there

Rostock's main area

Town Square in Rostock where you can just sit and relax, get a brew, or something to eat

Interesting shoe store in Rostock, shoes put on the steps to sell

Some of the more interesting buildings in Rostock

In Warnemunde along the main waterfront area

Just a tip. When we were in rostock, we stopped in for a beer. they served it in this great sort of glass mug. We asked if we could buy a couple for souvenirs. they sold us TWO for 4 euro's and it WAS a great souvenir.

You'll have a great time there.

Cheers

Thank you so much for the advise and pictures. Since the last ferry is so early, if we are having a good time in Rostock we may just take the train back!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind word on the pix.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I know we bought a round trip ticket on the ferry when we were going to Rostock. They sort of come around once you are on board, to pay for the trip.

I wouldn't want to steer you the wrong way about the train, as I just do not know.

I'm sure some one will be able to give you more info on that.

Cheers

You see P7 = Main Cruise Terminal = Terminal 1:

FERRY = crossing the river

BOAT TO ROSTOCK = sightseeing boat to Rostock need about one hour

You can easily take the commuter train to Rostock:

Here are the 2009 information - I need to update for 2010 when I finished my blog for CELEBRITY EQUINOX:

HeinBloed,

If we take the boat to Rostock and end up walking around. Where is the tram that we catch in Rostock to take to the train station? Do you have to have coins to buy tickets or will it except bills as well?

Thanks,

You take tram 5/6 form the downtown area to Rostock Hauptbahnhof (Hbf = Central Station).

Smaller bills are widely accepted with the machines.

So if you pay 1.70 EUR in a machine and you inserted 20.00 EUR you get 18.30 EUR in change!!!

Have some smaller bills with you.

It's an integrated tariff: you only need one ticket for tram and commuter train (S-trains) back to Warnemünde.

Is there any wineries in the area to visit? Is it possible to hire a taxi or driver at the port to see some of the countryside?

Northern Germany is more the beer country - so if you like to see wieneries you need to go to Central and Southern Germany. Sorry.

You can hire a taxi in front of the cruise terminal or you pre-book like here:

http://www.limousinenservice-rostock.m-vp.de/

They had until two years also an English website but actually not anymore. But they still offer private sightseeing tours.

If you do not mind to drive your self you can easily rent a car with Hertz who delivers the car in front of the cruise terminal.

Here is one countryside-ride suggestion:

  • 3 months later...

We will be in port on May 30 from 9 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. We would like to see the area around the port, such as Warnemunde, Rostock and and/or any other interesting town, rather than go to Berlin. What would be the best way to approach this? Should we go to Rostock first then visit the closer towns? What would be the best way both from an economic and time standpoint to get around - train, bus, private car, etc. What are the points of interest that we should consider.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you Heinbloed for your help.

Considering our time, I think we should either go to Rostock or Wismar then see Warnemunde. Which would you recommend? Which should we see first and what would be the best means of transportation from one town to another from a time and economical standpoint? What would you recommend seeing in each town - the highlights?

Again thank you for your help.

Aha - CELEBRITY CONSTELLATION from 09.00 hrs to midnight...

The most economic for a party upto five persons is a Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern which is 26.00 EUR for 5 (18.00 EUR if you are travelling as a single).

As it might unexpected very economically: you might want to travel in 1st class:

48.00 EUR for a group of 5 or 28.00 EUR for a single.

See here how to buy:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/02/warnemunde-germany-all-destinations.html

Schedule:

ScheduleWismar20101-vi.jpg

To opitimize the waiting time I would start to go to Rostock.

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2008/12/rostock-germany.html

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/02/warnemunde-germany-rostock-train-and.html

The train leaves every 15 minutes on 07, 22, 37, 52 minutes past the hour.

or you go by boat but this costs extra

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/warnemunde-germany-rostock-boat-tour.html

I will update the boat tour part and Rostock part in a few days but I am going myself on a cruise tonight.

Depending on the time you need in Rostock 1-3 hours:

you need to be 06 minutes past the hour at the Central Station to get your Wismar-bound train.

Once you arrived there:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/wismar-germany.html

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/05/wismar-germany-city-walk.html

To get back:

The latest connection you should try to get: 19.42 hrs from Wismar with a transfer in Rostock and you are back in Warnemünde at 21.21 hrs.

You can go any hour earlier to see a little more from Warnemünde:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2008/12/warnemnde-germany.html

This part will be also updated in few days.

Another option: rent a car:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/warnemnde-germany-car-rental.html

This part will be also updated in few days. All HERTZ-Information are finally confirmed.

You can go on this scenic route:

Sorry for having confusing you but for now.

But many other cruisers made it after checking out for themselves which specific information they need.

There are more options than you practically need. But each cruiser has a different need so I can only spread the information that the cruisers can build their information structure they need.

If the weather is good the river trip from Warnemuende is well worth it. Cost one way is 8 Euro per person. It is not worth the round trip as the last boat back is so early, 3.15pm. It is better to return by tram and train.

The boats leave at regular intervals starting at 10.30am from the berth on the right just past the cross river ferry and BEFORE you turn left for the station. From the City Harbour pier it is a five minute walk into the town centre. Cross the main road opposite the pier and walk up SCHNICKMANN Strasse,(a pedestrian street, part slope and part steps), cross the tramlines and a few steps down Breite Strasse brings you to the University Square and the town centre.

To return to the ship take a tram number 5 (direction Sudblick) or a number 6 (direction Mensa) to the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) Your stop is the one immediately after the tram goes underground but the indicator board in the tram gives plenty of warning. City trains S1 and S2 go from platforms 1 or 2 on the upper level. The 1.70 Euro ticket which you buy from the machine at the tramstop (instructions are in English) and validate in the tram will take you all the way back to the ship.

Just wanted to share an experience we had which does not seem to have any advertising. We planned to go on a short walking tour in English to get a few details and a feel for the place before we explored for ourselves but were told at the Tourist Office that there was no such thing available. However, we found a 1 hour Walking Tour offered by the historical society from their HQ in the KROEPELINER TOR, the big tower at the end of the pedestrian shopping street. The tour cost 5 Euro per person and the guide was an Australian lady now resident in Rostock, very interesting and informative in a pleasant, chatty way. She gives the facts and figures but also plenty of little anecdotes and takes in a few places which are not in the guide books. The little cafe in the tower does coffe, tea and fruit juices; there are 5 floors of exhibitions with an English translation supplied and great views from the top windows (cost 2 Euro); they have some interesting photos and literature in English to read while you take a rest and there is always an English-speaking member of the staff on hand to answer questions. Worth a look. We loved the city and intend to go back again for a longer stay.

Can you tell me what is the position regarding taxis from the ship to Rostock? Are they available and what would the approximate cost be?

2010RostockWarnemuendeB13-vi.jpg

Left taxi - right ship (Terminal 1 = Pier 7).

If your ship berth Pier 8 (= Terminal 2) it's just in the back where I was taking the photo.

Taxi to Rostock is about 20-25 EUR depends where you want to go.

Why don't you join the roll call? More than 1200 posts with more than 80 people posting. They are sharing tips on all possible ports on there. My parents are on the same cruise and they posted some helpful info they found about taking the train to Schwerin.

My husband and I would like to do that tooo. I read that you have to take the boat or train. Train is shorter , Hope to meet you at the meet and greet, I just got on this site last week and Im not doing my packing.

If you email me I hope I get to see the message. thanks.Joan

Zur Kogge is a great place, decorated in early 1900's style and serves excellent food. Also recommended; Ratskellar, Kellar in the Hopfenmarkt, Alex's in the New Market. It depends what you want to eat, there are heaps of eateries. The local speciality is fish. We could only find Bratwurst on street stalls but it was good fun standing around eating like the locals do.

Just a point about the Lander Tickets referred to by Heinblod. They cost 26 Euro for up to 5 persons to travel all day after 9am on the regional trains only in Mecklenburg, not ICE, IC or EC trains. You certainly have watch this when looking at a timetable as ALL trains are listed together. You can only ride trains with the designation RE, RB or REGIO. Also the 18Euro ticket is NOT a day ticket for a single person, it is a one way ride for up to 5 persons.

You have a couple of options. We did the ferry back and forth but be aware that the last ferry back to Warnemunde from Rostock is about 3:30 or so. We liked that as we also wanted time to explore Warnemunde. Several people take the ferry to Rostock and do the train coming back so you can have a lot more time in Rostock.

We enjoyed the ferry ride. it is about 35-40 minutes, but not really much to see.

Cheers

I would share this opinion:

it's a good way to "kill" sometime until sights and stores open in Rostock.

It's convenient because it starts right next AFTER next... to the cruise terminal:

The next would be the ferry (left) which takes you only to the other side of the river Warnow:

2010RostockWarnemuendeFaehre06-vi.jpg

and there where the red boat is - this would be the place the boats to Rostock start.

Their boats look more like this:

2010RostockStadthafen08-vi.jpg

Once you arrive in Stadthafen (City Port) you just need to walk this way upwards to be in the heart of Rostock with the shopping mile.

For restaurants I would also say Ratskeller, I don't know Zur Kogge....and Alex's is a no no, been there many many times with a group of ladies and the service is slow and the food is mediocre. :)

Personally Warnemünde is full of many many great restaurants, with fish being the main speciality. As summer comes the Fish Markets stay open longer where you can get fish sandwiches. Though the people don't speak English you can just point, it normally works. The fish market is after the train stations but before the bridge over the canal. Take a right at Lila Bakerei when walking towards Warnemünde.
