Chennai

We were in Chennai Nov 2014 with Azamara where we disembarked on the second day in port. We actually hired a guide via Viator for a 6-8 hour tour taking in most of the sights, including lunch at a local Indian Restaurant. It was very reasonable and the guide spoke very good English and had an enormous amount of interesting facts about Chennai. Maybe worth a look on Viator.

If it were not so far away, I would recommend taking a cab to Pondicherry, a unique spot, the French trading outpost in old India. But alas, it's 3 hours from Chennai, and one really needs an overnight to avoid spending the whole day in transit.
