Nursery Potty-Trained Requirements

Is anyone familiar with the potty training requirements for the nursery? My son is finally in underwear (woohoo) and can get his pants down but still needs assistance with wiping and putting the bottoms back on. Does Disney require 100% bathroom independence or do they help in the nursery?

There are no "potty training requirements" for the nursery. It's assumed your child is in diapers. I believe in the nursery, they can help. In the kid's clubs they cannot.

How old is your son?

I would imagine they will help him, since the nursery is for those under 3. Most of them will probably still be in diapers. We are leaving soon and my 2 1/2 year old grandson is completely potty trained. He also is able to go on his own and pull up his pants. Now if he is in there and needs assistance with wiping, I'm sure they can help him.

I'll also point out that the Magic class ships don't have a toilet in the nursery. If your child can express the need to use a toilet (and there are CMs available to take him) they will escort him to the kid-sized toilet in the kid's club.

On the Dream class ships, there's a toilet in the nursery.

Thank you that is important! We are sailing on the Magic in a couple of weeks. The trip is a little more than a month before my sons 3rd birthday. So he'll be in the nursery still.

I'm surprised they didn't add a potty to Magic during her recent dry dock.

He's done so well these last two weeks. I'd hate for him to have an accident waiting to go potty in the other area. I hope it's not a far walk.

I'm confused!

If a child in the It's a Small World nursery needs to go potty, the It's a Small World nursery CM's can take them to the regular Club bathrooms and help them with wiping and everything else in there, yet around the 3 years olds they cannot help?

Are you sure they don't have a toilet in the nursery? Where do the CM's go if they need to? They cannot use Guest bathrooms, and it is a long way to any crew areas from deck 5 midships.

I just watched a YouTube video of the newly updated nursery on Magic and there is no bathroom in there. Unfortunately. It sounds like an inconvenience to both the staff members as well as the potty trained children under the age of three.

I am assuming that the staff members in the nursery have taken specific training classes that allow them to change diapers and assist with bathroom needs.

I know that is how it works on Royal Caribbean, their Adventure Ocean staff members must go through specific training in courses at the headquarters in order to be certified to work in the nursery. I know this after getting to know one of the nursery staff members very well on one of our past cruises.

Going to look at the deck plans to seeing how far away those bathrooms might be.

The problem is that originally, kids who were toilet trained were allowed to participate in the Oceaneer's Club programming rather than the nursery. Kids in diapers had to be in the nursery, even if they were 3. That all changed a few years ago when legal got involved in the programming issues.

The CMs in the nursery are trained and approved for changing the kids and dealing with toilet issues. The area is also staffed to allow for the time and effort this requires. The CMs in the Oceaneer's Club are prohibited from entering the bathroom with the kids. Supposedly this is because of the whole "inappropriate touching" issues and that of being in a private space alone with a child. I know that this makes no sense when the nursery personnel are allowed to take the child to the bathroom and help if needed. They also have more kids per CM in the OC--reflecting the standards in the US based on the increased ages of the kids and that they don't deal with toilet issues.

In the nursery, the changing area is not enclosed or private although it is not in the main traffic pattern. No closed doors, etc.

The nursery is a relatively short distance from the OC, BUT in my experience when a young child says they need to go, they mean "right this minute." The concept of "wait" isn't in their ability yet.

Set your child up for success. Be sure that you take him to the restroom immediately before you drop him off. If you are leaving him for more than 90 minutes or so, consider returning to escort him to the restroom or ask a staff member to take him an hour after drop off rather than waiting till he requests it. You can always point out that he can get so involved in playing that he might forget.

Obviously adding a child sized toilet in the nursery would have been sensible with the new rules, but the imagineers don't always know how things work in the "real world" and the people who deal with the ship on a day to day basis don't have the final word in structural changes.

Thanks Moki. I'm going to practice with my son for the next week and a half with a "long walk" around the house to get to the bathroom. In hopes that he will understand the concept of holding it until he gets to the potty.

I am also going to work on having them pull up his own pants, unfortunately he insists on getting completely naked with his shorts and underwear 3 feet away from him before going to the bathroom. Lol

I have 11 days for him to master new skills!

Believe me, I know how short the walk from the nursery entrance to where the club is!

I walked along that hallway many many times to and from the BVT!

I would hope there is a door into the club (that maybe is not visible enough from a camera or smart phone point of view) so that the poor CM's do not have to carry a possibly crying young child, not in diapers possibly urinating or defecating along the hallway to the club entrance and possibly be held up with Guest's dropping their kids off.

I am sure this would have been addressed during the makeover had something less inefficient not already been in place.

And you will find no argument with me about the "I would love it to be this way" vs. this is what works or would work in REAL life attitude of the imagineers.

Another thing you can do is to manage his liquids. My son went on his first cruise at 3 years and 2 weeks old. He was potty trained, but still had occasional accidents when he was excited or involved in activities. So every morning I would make sure he had no liquids in the hour before going to the kids' club, and take him to the bathroom just before dropping him off. Then I'd pick him up 3 hours later for lunch and let him drink all he wanted, but again, give him no liquids in the hour before dropping him off in the afternoon or evening. It worked very well! When they're that small, liquids tend to run through them very fast.

  • 5 weeks later...

I am back to report on my own questions!

We sailed on the Magic Jan 10th. I specifically asked the nursery how the toilet situation works because my son was going to spend time in there. There are secet doors, okay... not so secret... BUT they connect in to Oceaneer Club right next to the bathrooms. So they took my son through the doors in to the Club and then back in to the nursery when he needed to go.

Here are the nursery-side of the doors:

I don't have a photo of the doors in the Oceaneer Club, but I physically stood there and looked at them. They are directly next to the bathrooms.

My son had one accident the whole time and it was because he didn't want to stop playing. They took great care of him :)
