In Norway the salary is higer then in the US. So there is no need to give lots of tip. If you have a sit-down lunsj or dinner and you are very pleased then you leave some tip. But there is no need to tip 18%.

If you are on a guidet tour and your guide is super, feel free to give some tip but you dont have to tip according to price of the tour.

If you buy take-out coffee and pastery, no need to tip.

We don't have pin and chip cards here in US that I know of. Will we have to use Krones for everything? I will have to get more Krones if we do. Thanks Lucy from the USA

The sun is up and it will be a hot day in Oslo:cool: it is already 73F:) So finally summer arrived:D

If you are in downtown area of Oslo, tourist areas they will some places take your card whit signature and you have to show ID whit pictures in restaurants and shops. But you should have some cash since not everyone will accept your card. And this will be different from store to store how they handle this.

Since you dont have a pin-code you can not withdraw cash from ATMs in Norway.

Most banks in Norway do not have cash in their offices. They only have ATMs outdoor.

If someone needs to exchange some money there is a FOREX Bank located next to the townhall in Oslo. It is a short walk from Akershus Festning were most of the cruises docks. 5-10min depending on how fast you walk.

FOREX Bank is one of the few banks in Oslo and Norway that can help you to exchange cash to NOK. They also have offices in Stavanger, Trondheim and Bergen.

They have all types of travel currency and can exchange USD/SEK/EUR/DKK to NOK.

They are not open on sundays at this location. If something says: STENGT = Closed

I have had quite a few visitors from the US over the years, and they have had very few problems using a credit card with a magnetic strip and signature. In the few situations where it was not accepted, this was because the shop didn't accept foreign cards at all (only local debit cards).

All of the tourist sights they visited were fine with the US signature cards, and the two places I recall having a problem were the McDonald's in Majorstuen and a small kebab stand.

Some less-tourist-friendly shops or restaurants may have trouble figuring out how to accept magnetic strip and/or signature cards, but they should be able to do it. Sometimes the system goes down, and even those of us with local chip-and-pin cards have to sign for our purchases!

However, you may have problems at unstaffed purchase points like the transit ticket machines, train station lockers, gasoline pumps, etc. If you're visiting for a port day, the only one that's likely of interest is the transit tickets, and you can just purchase those (with your US credit card) from the closest convenience store.

The T-bane has digital displays that show the next stop, and it is announced in both Norwegian and English.

The buses have screens showing the next 4-5 stops.

Most trams have a digital display showing the next stop, but I've seen a few that do not.

If you get on a bus or tram where the display is not working, ask the driver to alert you when your stop is approaching. They are generally quite helpful if you aren't sure where you're going.

I am looking for bus/tram numbers from the cruise port to Vigelands Park and then on to the Peninsula to visit Folk Museum, Fram and Viking museums and then taking ferry back to the port. Also, how much walking will be involved since there will be several senior adults in our group.

I would appreciate any information you could give me. I will be getting the Oslo Pass.

It's about 40 meters from the tram stop to the park gate. The central area of the sculpture park stretches for about 500 meters from the gate.

Since our ship arrives at 0700 and most of the museums don't open until 1000, we're thinking of walking by the Opera House first (to get outside pictures) and then to the Oslo Visitor Center to get Oslo Passes, then catch the train up to the ski jump.

Since we'll be on foot walking uphill from the Holmenkollen station up to the ski jump (and because we're not exactly spring chickens anymore), I want to make sure we walk the shortest way to get to the Ski Museum/jump tower elevator. I'm looking at it in detail on Google Maps Street View. Do we stay on Holmenkollveien and walk in around the rim of the lower bowl seating? Or do we turn left on Kongeveien?

To walk to the opera house is nice during the morning. Hope the weather is good, then you will have some beautiful pictures. The opera house is open outdoor so you can walk on it.

The metro takes 25 min from Nasjonalteathret. Westbound directions.

The metro runs to Holmenkollen every 15min.

You can stay on Holemkollenveien or go via Kongeveien. It will be signs to Holmenkollen Ski when you leave the metro.It is the same distance. If you walk by Holmenkollveien one way you can go the other way down to the metro. When you walk in Kongeveien you will pass a hotel that is old.

When you stand in the lover part of the jump jo can go up from the lower area to the museums entrance. Early in the morning the line to the elevator is shorter.

If you feel super and you feet are fine it is possible to take the stairs to the topp:D But there are some stairs to walk up;)

Most banks in Oslo wouldn't be able to do currency exchange anyway. Some are actually entirely cash-free. In general, Norway is a fairly cashless place, and most people pay for almost everything by card.

If you do want some cash, it should be fairly easy to find an ATM. There are some at Aker Brygge, and I know that there is one here:

If you really need a currency exchange, the Forex at the train station is open on Sundays.

Is something big going on in Oslo at the end of May? I was looking for a hotel near Oslo S for 31 May, 2017 I had planned to book the Thon Opera but it was already fully booked. As was the hotel inside the station (a Comfort Inn I believe). Almost every hotel in central Oslo is already booked for that night. The airport hotels had availability but their rates were substantially higher than they were for a night I booked prior to our departure in mid-June.

Is it likely additional rooms will open up later near the train station or should we go ahead and book at the airport and just take the train into town??
