Snap away. I do it ALL the time, and have seen others do the same.

If you are going to snap away please send us the pictures so we all can see what we are missing. Love all the food on Oceania. :):):)

I think it's trailer trash tacky, but obviously I'm in a small minority.

Taking food pictures at McD or KFC would be trailer trash tacky.

Doing so discretely on Oceania is more about giving credit to the great chefs and wonderful food presentation as well as some memories of a nice vacation.

JMO.

BTW, you are not in "a small minority" - so far you are alone :D

but I am with LakeSideKen -- I also think it is tacky. If you are at a table for 2, no problem, but if at a larger table I find it disruptive.

Tells me you thought there was a problem based in common sense and good manners. It gets done as a byproduct of the wide spread promotion of self indulgent. behavior and the smart phones becoming peoples total life.

That dosent make it good or polite

Seriously believing that its important to tell people what and where you eat or are eating...No one cares... its not important ,except to flaunt your self importance of yourself; pure narcissism at others expense

Dining in a classy place in the company of others who have come to enjoy the ambiance and enjoy their time. to have some person snapping away detracting from ever ones experience thinking only of their gratification..like national enquirer paparazzi

No different than the jerks talking on a cell phone in theaters, restaurants

and the epidemic of self pictures.... no different Trailer trash tacky is mild

Please show some class and consideration of others...just because there are others being rude jerks...does that justify you being a jerk too?

Your an adult you know how to act like it even if they wont.

Did you ever remember what you Mon said... just because all your friends did something...does that mean its right and you should do it too... The fact others cant see the forest for the trees is indeed a sad commentary on personal responsibility and consideration. Pictures in French laundry or KFc.. still the same..

Most cosmopolitan folks could care less about looking at pictures of food.

But foodies and other chefs - professional or amateur - love to look at them and share them with other like-minded people.

I know my nephew, who is a trained chef in LA, does.

Besides, these pictures are intended for private use or family - not those that have no interest in viewing them.

They are best taken at private tables or with friends but if taken discretely at shared tables they are not offensive (i.e. taken promptly without fuss, posing the plate and much discussion and without delaying others at the table from enjoying their meal).

I think we are seeing the generations chime in here. The younger folks grew up with iPhones, and constant sharing (Think food porn pics on instagram). Us Baby Boomers did not. Go ahead and take pictures as far as I am concerned. We realize you want to remember the dish, but after going to enough 4 and 5 star restaurants, DH and I remember the flavors and presentation, but don't need a pic of it. Kind of like performers who ask the folks in the audience to put down their phones, and listen and watch the live concert.

Just my 2 cents.

I am a food appreciator.. both home and professional (CIA and Cordon Blu)

cook/chef... and I have enough of respect for cuisine ( the whole package from table setting china to presentation) that I recognize the intrusion and detraction that the current craze can produce quite a few Michelin similiar class places prohibit them as a gross intrusion that fosters lots of other stuff

I have respect for the establishment and its patrons by not forcing then to bend to my behavior . Fine dining is in fact a form of theater your cousin will tell you and the experience is a product of the house to the presentation and lighting and noise....its all scripted to work together.. and behaviors not complementary to that package can mess up all the others in the "theateR' THE restaurant/house asks of its patrons to participate in this grand drama that they carefully wrote and to respect and play to the script

You make a valid point that if at a private table, doing it very subtle and discreet.. And I agree with your logic....

The fly in the ointment is that you are in the minority.. Just as I. and the vast majority are out there feeling empowered to use their gizmo at any time and as often as they want.. giving an inch has produced miles without limits ( many talk a picture, and pow they instantly e-mail it or post it with a look at me intent. In that environment the obsession is exponential..

Thats where your sensible take fails because you aint them and to say a blanket it is ok lets the vast numbers out there to charge ahead any time any place. Thats my worry is them not you and where logic is replaced by I want it I want it now folks...more and faster and more.

If we are at a shared table we ask if the others mind if we snap a photo

no one really cares as long as you are not snapping them

we do not use a flash usually

most of the time we have eaten most of the item before we remember the photo :D

We usually take shots of desserts because of the presentation (see above)

we have a small camera so photos are done before many are finished getting served theirs

We are baby boomers who never had cell phone or computers growing up so maybe we are in our second childhood .....beats having a temper tantrum because we could not get an extra sitting in the specialties ;)

Guess I will wear my overalls next cruise.... we are not Cosmopolitan or trained chefs, eat in Michelin stared restaurants just ordinary everyday people

To each his own

Oh my gosh. In reading this thread, I never even thought about someone using a flash at the table. Please, no!

In my opinion discreet picture taking seems OK. But I must admit that my sometimes reaction is that something is wrong and the picture taker is documenting it. For example, crack in the sidewalk, dent in the car, etc.

I guess discrete and not numerous are the bywords.

Count me in with those folks who think that taking pictures of food served in a restaurant is tacky. Most cosmopolitan folks could care less about looking at pictures of food.

Usually when this type of question is asked the poster already knows the answer. Yes it is tacky!

My goodness people get a grip

Tacky is talking on your cell phone at the table in any restaurant

Tacky is old men in speedos

Tacky is wearing shorts to dinner in the GDR or Specialty restaurants

Tacky is talking about how much money you make & property you own

Tacky is boasting about how many Michelin star restaurants you have eaten in & the Chef let you cook your own meal there

Tacky is palming the Maitre'd to get into the specialties when you do not have a reservation

the list goes on

We had a table of 4 with people that obviously liked to show their wine knowledge

We do not usually drink at dinner not a problem if they do

The problem was they had to pass their glass to us to "sniff" the bouquet

They never asked if we would like a glass of their wine (which we would have declined ) but asking us to sniff their wine was TACKY
