MONACO - Is HOHO Bus worth it?

Depends if you think it worth paying for 4 people. However Monaco is steep in places and hilly in others so local buses might suit you better than walking everywhere as you could all travel all day for very little. Single journey tickets can be bought or a day ticket is only E5-50 pp. Very good routings and frequencies and you can even use the day ticket on the electric boat which crosses the harbour.

A good source of info is the official visitmonaco.com website which has links to bus routes and tourist info. Lots on there, the more you look the more you find. And the Tomsportguides website of course, which gives you info from a cruising perspective. If you don't already know this site do look. Monaco he describes how to get to both the old and new towns from the docking area, nearest bus stop etc.

And Tripadvisor.

Once you know what you want to visit and where you want to go, you can look at the bus routings and work out your ticket options.

I first misread your answer Edinburgher only by re-reading did I catched that you recommended the local buses over the HOHO.

Yes, never done the Hoho in Monaco, but I was there only twice in transit for a day (but the first time it was a lot like a "cruiseday" as I arrived by night train from Paris and departed the same evening by night train to Switzerland.)

So with a Hoho-Bus you would pay about 84 Euros for the four of you, because in France kids are only kids till they turn 12, after that they might get Student Discounts (so if they got any students cards, bring them along and you might get at some places discounts )

In my eyes, if you're fit and like to walk, you can do without the Hoho.

With teenage boys the most interesting sights might anyway be the amazing yachts in the harbor and the expensive cars on the street. Monaco is very walkable. And the major sights I would recommend for teens is the ozeanographic Museum and the Palace, maybe as well the Automobile Museum. From the Square in Front of the Palace you also got a good view on both sides (for example on the Stadium of the local Football Club). And that's all in the neighbourhood of the Cruise Pier.

The Cathedrale (between the Ozeanographic Museum and the Palace) might be a nice sight for you as well. As the tombs of late Count Rainier and his wife Grace Kelly are there.

Maybe as a preparation look with the teens (if they are not too Young) the James Bond Movie Goldeneye as there are some spots filmed in Monaco. The time I was there I searched for the spot where James Bond was overlooking the harbour and it's right up the hill where the cruise pier is...

It is certainly possible to walk and we have done that too, but to access the best scenic viewpoint outside the Jardins Exotique a bus or taxi would be essential and we usually take the bus. Bus#2 goes there, and when leaving it runs in the opposite direction to the Casino if that is of interest. It would be worth using the bus for these two sights even if walking elsewhere.

Depends on plans for the day. Once a list of "go to" places is compiled, reference should be made to the bus routings map. May be a combination of buses and walking would work, also make use of any of the public elevators along the way because they could save a steep climb. And the electric boat (bus ticket) crosses the harbour amongst or close to some of the glam super yachts.
