How to get a passport renewed ASAP?

I'd hand walk it to a passport agency that does the expedited passports. My co-worker sent his 4 weeks ago using the mail route for an expedited passport. He was supposed to get it back Friday - didn't happen. Had to call multiple places to see what was going on. They promised to "overnight" it to him - no reason given why it was just sitting there. He was supposed to fly out Tuesday - it didn't show up on Saturday or Monday. Pulled up the USPS tracking - it now said deliver on WEDNESDAY. It did show up Tuesday. BUT, he had to pay to change his flights and had to eat one night's hotel down in Cabo because of the delay.

Just an anecdotal "beware". But, then, I did my passport back in February, expedited, and had it in 2 weeks. Your Mileage May Vary ;)

Cruise is 4 weeks away and I just realized that I need to get my passport renewed (it expired in January).

What are the best options for getting it renewed and in my hands ASAP?

Yes, I'm an idiot.

Not certain if you are talking about Canadian passport, or another country.

If it is Canada, it can be done next business day however you have to present proof (i.e. airline ticket) that you require the service and pay an expedited fee.

For other countries, someone else can provide some insight.

Some people mentioned third party passport services. I think that is a US thing. Not certain in most other countries a third party would be able to queue jump like that. In the case of Visas, it is more they know their way around the system and who to talk to.

Can anyone give you a good answer if we don't know where you live?

Here in Sweden we can get a new passport in 3-4 days so 4 weeks seems like a long time!

Yes, exactly. I'm in the US and had mine renewed via mail last March. I did not expedite and had my new one in just over two weeks. If you expedite you can have in much sooner.

I renewed mine recently. Sent it away early May and the new one arrived in the mail exactly four weeks later. I recently read that the longer times at present have to do with the large volume of passports expiring in 2018 as many were issued for the first time in 2008 and thus the spike in renewal submissions.

Strange. I know back in 2007 there was a fairly bad backlog due to the changes to the new format. However Passport Canada resolved those issues. That was 10 years ago. I have not heard of any recent problems. Is it across the country or just in certain cities?
