Does anyone know of a company that has the Aurigas open-air trucks that we could get for a small tour and then to be dropped off in old town for a group of 8?

I've seen pictures of old town, there are restaurant and a church, do they have any shops? Anything of significance to see?

Also, had considered doing a small tour and then having a light lunch somewhere overlooking the ocean. We love beautiful views. Any recommendations?

copied this reply I did yesterday... seems to fit your needs... also downtown Mazatlan is close, church, main marketplace, no place for the Mexico urban timid... suggest the open air tour below

Playa Bruja - charter a palomina taxi. !!! Outside the cruise terminal !!! Try for $15/hr. Playa Bruja is over 30mins north past the new AVI resort. Ask the driver to take the beach route to Mr. Lionso cafe beachfront on Playa Bruja. The drive will give you a beautiful Mazatlan tour experience, and Mr. Lionso is clean affordable and a spectacular beachfront location. ask the driver to stop at locations that interest you on the way back (resorts, golf courses, beach, golden zone shopping, large church, tallest light house, drop off at stone island at the end, its your $15/hr)

Mazatlan next week will likely be delightful warm, an open air extended taxi tour will be xlnt

the old downtown and cliff divers are neg. Cliff divers are a waste of time joke. Old downtown is a traffic mess heavy urban Mexican experience. Near the cruise terminal is not so nice

Suggest head up the coast, along the coast, TELL DRIVER ALONG THE COAST/BEACH, to the end of Playa Bruja beach (xlnt view cafe), then work your way back down the coast, stopping at points of interest (like tour el cid resort & beach, they welcome cruisers, walk right in like ya own the place, view deer island close up), then stop at a beach front palapa for a shrimp taco at "Playa Norte" (sellect one with several other diners eating), and then tour a bit of old downtown gridlock heavy urban Mexican (forget cliff diver). Pay the driver off at the Stone Island ferry, go to stone island, walk around a bit, have a cool drink, take the ferry back, pay a few $ to a new taxi for the 1/4 mile distance back to the cruise terminal (taxi's are abundant). Sit a spell at the cruise terminal bar and watch your fellow passengers frolic thru the tequila.

playa bruja upper left, bottom right is ship at "cruise ship dock", & downtown is "central market", & stone island beach is "isla de la piedra"

taxi's are everywhere in mazatlan, no worries, also DO NOT ASK OR ALLOW the driver to take you to his choice (his cousin's cafe or shop is not a nice place to visit). Mexicans are far more patient and understanding than we are. Ask the driver to turn around to visit a spot that looked intersting, do it over and over, and waiting for you is no problem

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I feel like we got ripped of last week, lol.

$20 an hour for a Pulmonia tour, just enough time to see the lighthouse, cliff divers and old town. We didn't have any desire to see the Gold Zone. Dropped off near the Mercado and Cathedral. Followed the Blue Line back to the ship. Saw several police around, watching the tourist route and stopping traffic at key intersections.

http://mazatlantoday.net/mazatlan_mercado_pino_suarez.html Lots of food stalls in the market and restaurants upstairs. Sometimes the ship's crew will take over a restaurant or two to cook a homemade meal.

In front of the church is a respados seller. Mexican snow cones, shaved from a block of purified ice. Homemade syrups. I had pineapple, Sis had strawberry. Ignore the bees.

Not too sure where the Walmart is in Mazatlan, but there's one across the street from the pier in Puerto Vallarta. Excellent exchange rate at 16.55:1, change back in pesos.

We had a group of 8 last month and found a guy outside the cruise terminal with a pick-up truck with two bench seats in the back and a canopy. He also had two speakers mounted in the back and we had great music plus a lot of fun. He took us everywhere we wanted to go and left us at the mercado for an hour. He was right there when we were ready to go to the water taxi terminal for a ride to stone island. When we returned from stone island, he was waiting for us to take us to the cruise terminal. A great guy and a wonderful day. The ride was not fancy, but everyone was very pleased with the ride and the price.
