What's the worse thing that can happen?

If I were to observe a deck chair "saved" for hours but not being used and there were none available - what is the worse thing that could happen? If the person came back wouldn't they just say "you are in my saved chair" and I would say "sorry" and leave? I'm not talking about grabbing someone's chair when they take a swim or go to the buffet or whatever. In other words what harm does it do to use the chair when not occupied and return it to the rightful "saver" who put their towel out at 6 a.m or whatever but didn't want to use it till 3 p.m. Kind of like using the handicap toilet when the bathroom is full and there are no handicap people in the bathroom IMHO! (and handicap people should go to the front of the line).

Personally, if the items have been there for more than 20-30 minutes, I'd give them to a crew member and tell him that somebody must've forgotten them, and to take them to lost and found. If the owner later shows up, I wouldn't get confrontational or say that I personally removed the items, but I would tell him that a crew member was collecting unattended items and to check with Guest Services. End of story.

I wish I could do this. I am too afraid of confrontation! haha I just wish Carnival would enforce it on every ship.

I'd be ticked if I was gone for 20-30 minutes and my stuff was gone and chair taken. I can't go to lunch for 30 minutes? Yikes.

If it was more like 1 hour or more, that is different.

No. If you want a reserved chair, sail on a cruise line which offers that. Princess may be a good option for you. But this is Carnival and you need to be considerate of the other 3,500 people sailing with you.

Chairs are to be used, not to hold your stuff while you go to lunch...a quick trip to the loo is fine, or to refill an empty glass, or a short dip in the pool but otherwise you are being a chair hog. I've actually watched folks who "save" two sets of loungers...one in the sun and one in the shade (just in case).

I ALWAYS remove lone towels or a single flip flop if there are no other available chairs. And if I see a group head off to lunch we are rude and inconsiderate and pile their junk on a single lounger. When they come back a few hours later we just claim ignorance. Besides, we rarely sit out in the sun for more than a few hours anyway.

This might sound really bad but I usually choose whether to take over someone's chair(s) depending on what I see they've left behind. If it's a single chair and all I see on the chair is some popular novel and a towel, then I'll fold up the towel, put the book on top of it and neatly place it under the chair, waiting for their return...it's happened multiple times and I've never had a confrontation with the person who came back to "claim" their space. They'll just pick up their stuff and move on...

HOWEVER, multiple chairs and any chairs with "kid stuff" on them scares me and I just leave those alone. Last thing I need is an angry parent or pissed off group of drunk guys coming back for their "spots" (happened multiple times over)

Oh the cruise ship squatters.....

I totally agree with Tapi. Why should the masses who paid good money for their vacation be deprived of the deck chair experience due to the inconsideration of others?

It amazes me how some people try to claim a piece of cruise ship real estate for a week by simply placing a personal item on it. I think on land they refer to those types of people as squatters. And on Lido deck and Serenity especially, we end up with entire squatter camps full of them. :p:eek::p:eek:

Princess has a fairly strict chair hog rule. Princess stated in the Patter that if you leave a chair unattended for more than 30 minutes, your belongings will be removed so that other passengers can take advantage of the chair. They do enforce it too.

On the Glory last week there always seemed to be chairs, even in the serenity area.

What I don't get is are you going to stand and stare at a chair for half hour to an hour to see if someone comes back? And if they do, move to the next chairs and stare another half hour to an hour? If you are sitting staring you already have chairs, right?

I love these posts that come back with a snazzy reply. People ask a question and the angels of the world come hounding down.

If you were the one who went for 20 minutes and came back and I had removed all of your belongs and took your chair, you wouldn't be angry? You'd just say "Oh, darn" and walk away? I doubt it.

Why would "Princess" be a good line for me?

I look at loungers this way...sit in it or loose it. Why should the chair hold your stuff while you are in the pool, eating lunch, in the hot tub, doing the ropes course, using the slides, playing trivia, or taking a nap in your room. No one lets you put your belongings on a stool in the casino and then go off to do something else, or place your stuff on a table in the buffet for the day.

People who "save" a chair all day and sit in it "occasionally" are being rude and I will be rude right back at them.

What if you are in the pool and not in your chair?

If you're at the pool. that means that you should be within view of your belongings and using the facilities that the chair was intended for. If someone tries to take your chair while you go to the pool for a quick dip, you can let them know that you're there. Also, you can keep an eye on your things for potential thefts. Not only is it considerate, it's common sense. Going on vacation doesn't mean leaving basic social skills at home.

It wasn't a snazzy reply. It was an honest one. Princess would be a good cruise line for you because you can reserve a chair at the Sanctuary for the entire week. The chair is yours whether you're there or not, or whether you leave your belongings on it or not. Of course it's not free, but it's a great option for those who think that leaving something on a chair while they go somewhere else on the ship entitles them to keep the chair indefinitely

Well, I just continue looking for open chairs in other areas and not worried about it.

The chair hogs exist and I just ignore it.

To bad there is no chair hog police.

I mean, dang- we have Bacon police! Oh FFS

Good point, limoguy! Lol. It looks like if Carnival can afford to invest in bacon police, they should be able to invest in CHOG police. ;-)

BUT....

your comment was "I can't go to lunch for 30 minutes? Yikes!"

Yes, you can. But if you come back and your stuff is moved or gone, don't be surprised.

The bottom line is very simple. If you have a seat, make sure you always have an eye on it. If it's out of eyesight, then it's no longer yours. I don't care how long you've been gone.

Fair is fair, and there is NO RESERVING SEATS. That's Carnivals' policy.

Some people get self righteous about people sneaking liquor onboard, or smoking on balconies, and whatnot. But, alot of the same people have no problem with reserving seats, and that's hypocritical.

If people are going to follow rules, then follow ALL OF THEM.

P.S., We travel in a group, and we WILL take CARNIVAL's unattended chairs.

That isn't always the case. We just returned from our 1st princess cruise in March. Went to Lido one morning to watch a movie. We even went 45 minutes early to make sure we could find a place to sit. Every single chair on that deck was saved or in use. There was probably only 25 people actually in the chairs. The rest had a towel, book, flipflop, etc. We kept walking around. Another couple came and we were talking to them. They went and asked one of the men walking around in a white uniform if there were any chairs available to watch the movie. He told them that it looked like they were all taken, and they would have to go up a level and get one of the chairs in the full sun. Not much help at all. We ended up getting a table and grabbing the 2 charis and moving them so we could see only part of the movie.

Not very comfortable at all. I kept watching, and very few people ever came and used the chairs.

So, at least on that Princess ship, they did not do anything about the chair hogs.
