what is that makes it worse ?

As a former Princess employee I know for a fact that the lodges and the Grand Class ships (haven't sailed in a Royal class ship yet) used (as of 2011 which may have changed since then) frozen coffee concentrate syrup the the coffee dispensers mix it with hot water to produce the "coffee" that comes from the machines in the buffet area. I get the beverage package now and before used the coffee card to get real coffee (espresso) instead of this horrible excuse for coffee. Not sure what they use now.

As of 2019 the coffee in the Horizon Court is still the syrup kind.  If you only drink 1 cup of regular coffee (not the specialty ones) buying a cup at the International cafe is actually cheaper than purchasing the coffee card.  Now, you can book a cruise with the drink package and ALL of your drinks are included!  🙂
