Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. We just booked one way air from DTW to Lisbon for our November TransAtlantic. The flights are on AA. We received an American Airlines "locator number". When would we be able to find the reservation on the AA website and select our seats? We don't have to pay for them until the final cruise payment in August. Any information is welcome. Thank you.
  2. It was "free" as long as we stayed with our plan for the next 2 years. We like them. No problems after 6 months. We took it on our last cruise in December and sold our house while using it to sign papers over the e-mail. Nothing like sitting by the ship's pool with a cocktail and selling your house.
  3. I also have a "flip" phone. We just upgraded to it. It is one of the latest "smart" phones. I also had a "flip" phone a long time ago. I like this one a lot more than the old one.
  4. Yes, Asctony. Exactly my point. All we hear from the media and "polls" is that people say the economy is bad. But cruises, concerts, sporting events, restaurants, etc are full. So it is not bad for everyone. My pro football season tickets have just doubled in price for next year. (Go, Lions) But I can buy them again, or not, as I wish. Happy holidays to all.
  5. Does Celebrity offer any "deals" for Elite members to dine in Tuscan or Murano? RCCL offers Buy One Get one Free for upper levels the first and second nights? Just looking at making a reservation and wondering. Any info is welcome. Thank you.

  7. All of these high prices are a true picture of how "bad" the current economy is. Not everyone can afford to take a cruise or go to a concert or pro sports event. But most of these have very little trouble selling out. So, it would appear that millions of people find a way to pay for these "luxuries". Everyone has to decide if these things are "worth it". Is there something else that is more beneficial to you that you could spend the money on? Individual decision making is what it is all about.
  8. Yes, I also have that plan but it will not work once you are about 5 miles from shore. I have used the Cellular at Sea pay by the text message and that works well ($0.50 each text) but I have never used it for internet and calls. I do know that ATT has a list of the ships it will work on, so maybe it does not work on older ships.
  9. We are booked on a Trans Atlantic. We may be doing a few calls, texts, and web surfing. Just wondering if any of you can comment on the difference in these 2 types of packages as far as how well they function on Celebrity Equinox. I can get probably all that I need from ATT for $100. I do not know the price of Celebrity package. I also get the free 90 minutes of Elite wifi, and so does my wife. Have any of you had experience with these plans?
  10. Just boarded Koningsdam on November 25. The Disney ship was also there boarding. This was our first time to San Diego and I am SO GLAD that I read info on these boards and asked questions. Now, to elaborate: Our boarding time was originally 11:00. The week before the cruise, it was changed to 11:20. Two days before the cruise, we were told we could come at 10:00 or 2:00. We were also told that it is a "small facility" and there would also be another ship boarding. Fortunately, we stayed the night prior to boarding at the Spring Hill Suites-Bayfront, directly across the street from the ship. At the hotel breakfast the room was full of cruisers, half of whom were children going on Disney. We spoke to another couple that told us they had decided to go over and get in line at 10, so they could enjoy the day on the ship and have lunch in the dining room. We asked the hotel to extend our check out time until noon, which they did. At 10:00 am, I looked out the window of our room and saw a line of passengers, and their luggage, that grew longer as I watched it. We were watching a college football game, so I checked every 15 minutes on the line. It eventually reached all the way to the next pier, and then curled its way around that pier. At noon, the line was still growing, so we checked out and went to the rooftop bar. We had a relaxing lunch and continued to watch the game on the big screen. By 2:00 pm the end of the line was "almost" to the final entrance gate. So we took our luggage and walked across the street to that gate. It still took us 45 minutes, from that point, to get onto the ship. This was only the Koningsdam passengers, as the Disney people were in a different line, but both lines eventually ended up merging inside the terminal to go through the scanners. When we first entered the original gate, I was told that if I wished to check my luggage, I had to take it down the sidewalk, cross the parking lot where we were stopped several times by unloading cars and trucks, give the luggage to the porters, and then return to get back in the line. I have never seen any system like this, and I have cruised from a LOT of ports in several different countries. Once we finished our luggage drop off and got through the scanners, things moved pretty quickly. On the last day of the cruise, I again spoke with the people who had told me they were going over at 10:00 to get in line. They said they had waited 3 hours (in the sun with no place to sit and rest). They never got to the dining room for lunch. BUT, they also told me that IF THEY HAD simply taken a taxi to the pier from the airport, the taxi would have just driven through the gate and dropped them off. People who flew in that morning and had a HAL transfer to the ship were simply taken immediately to the terminal gate and dropped off. There was much discussion of this whole debacle during the cruise, and also much discussion of the day that there would be 3 ships in port. On the other hand, the disembarkation was one of the best ever. We were the only ship, breakfast was served until 9:00, and you just went down and selected the luggage tags you wanted with the departure time you preferred. We were directed to go to the "UBER" line and make our call for pick-up ($26.00). This was not our first "rodeo", so we simply took our luggage and walked across the street to make our call. The car was there in 2 minutes ($17.00) This is my story. Get all the info you can, make your own decisions, and don't depend on HAL for guidance. Safe travels.
  11. My wife and I were on the Koningsdam 10 night cruise out of San Diego on November 25. We enjoyed the cruise. We thought it was some of the best food we had ever had on a cruise and all of the entertainment was very good, except the magician, who talked more than performing "magic". The only negatives were our room, which some nights made a lot of rattling and squeeking noises as the ship vibrated from the wave actions,(we kept using pieces of paper as "shim-wedges" and finally stopped it from disturbing our sleep) and THE BOARDING PROCESS. It was ridiculous, and I will elaborate on it over on the west coast board.
  12. Scheduled to sail on Koningsdam out of San Diego Saturday, November 25. Last week I received Boarding Information saying to arrive at 11:00 am for Group B. Two days ago we received an "update" saying to arrive at 11:00 am for Group C and that ship would depart at 4:00 pm rather than 3:00 pm. This morning we have received another update saying another ship would also be boarding (was this a surprise?) and that the terminal has little seating area, so "if we are flexible", we should just arrive at 10:00 am or between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. If we are not flexible, we should just adhere to the 11:00 am and Group C instruction. QUESTIONS: Which would you advise us to do-the 10 am, the 11:00 am or the 2 to 3 pm? If we do go early, will we be able to watch the UM/Ohio State game on the ship television? Crazy to begin the cruise asking about tv stations (FOX) but it is a big game for us. ny advice from those familiar with cruising from San Diego is welcome. We are staying at Spring Hill Suites across from the ship. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.
  13. Does someone know what time they serve lunch in the MDR on boarding day?
  14. We are to sail on Koningsdam, Saturday, November 25, out of San Diego. We have never sailed from San Diego. We have received our boarding pass, which gives us a time of "11:20 and Group B". Exactly what does that mean? Do we show up to drop off our luggage at 11:20 or do we do that before 11:20 and actually board at 11:20? Can we come later than that? We are staying at a hotel across the street from the pier. Any information/advice is welcome. Thank you.
  15. We have been on a LOT of cruises doing a LOT of different itineraries, but our Zaandam cruise from Santiago to Buenos Aires, with 5 nights, cruising in Antarctic waters was the best. And if you have the time, and some "extra" money, add on a side trip to Iguazu Falls. We did this on our own once we arrived in Buenos Aires. We wondered if we should take an extra 2 nights to do it, and it was truly the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae. In one trip we were in the glaciers and ice bergs, and then later hiking in the jungles, An amazing experience all around.
