  1. I DO NOT KNOW, and am now almost 1,500 miles away from their preparations.

My very close association with quite a few people of his generation has given me a healthy dose of respect for their abilities to cope with unusual circumstances thrust upon them by whatever forces.

Further, and equally important is a clear understanding of how unlikely they are to change their habits or procedures because of my advising them it might be a good idea to do so. This ain't my first rodeo!

Again, respect and thanks for ALL the responses, which were not only helpful but also heart felt and kind. This can be a very warm and fuzzy website sometimes.

  2. Possibly. I am unhappy at the thought that a cruise line which caters largely to an elderly population has never encountered a couple who do NOT use email etc.

I have another dear friend who is now 98 years old and who steadfastly and devoutly refuses to use a computer for any purpose whatsoever. He still drives, does shopping for himself and his wife of sixty years, enjoys walks and people watching etc, but still pays all bills by check and has no idea (nor does he care a bit) about facebook, youtube and the rest of it.

Maybe a little bit of me envies them. Certainly it will not be the first time in their long marriage when they encounter unexpected roadblocks because of their lack of comfort with 21st century methodology.

  3. Good friends of mine are leaving at the end of this month for a Holland America cruise in Alaska (they did not know name of the ship!)

If they take a new power strip with multi outlets, will it be confiscated when they board?

[i DID try a search here before asking]

  4. Thanks for the intelligent and reasoned responses to my questions.

I think most thinking adults in the non-muslim world who enjoy extensive travel have had to continually do risk analysis when they make their plans.

I visited Sidi Bousaid (Tunis)off an MSC cruise in May 05, and felt about as endangered there as I would have in Disneyland, which it greatly reminded me of.

I killed a trip to Manila and sadly Ankor Wat because of some terrorist explosions in Manilla and a travel agent, who was himself a fearless traveler and former Navy Seal, who told me HE wouldn't consider such a trip at that particular point in time.

I have always wanted to visit the Pyramids, but the idea of traveling in an armed convoy has lost most of its appeal. Bethlehem, another spot I had wanted to visit is likewise right OFF my "bucket list".

  5. NCL quit making calls to Tunisia some time ago because Israeli tourists were not allowed to enter the country.

How have the multiple other lines calling there handled this situation? Do they simply not carry Israeli passengers? Or do they warn them that they may cruise but will not be allowed to leave the ship?

So, at this point it looks like the attack will successfully prevent large numbers of tourists from visiting Tunisia and spending money there. How is that in any way helpful to their cause? It seems like they simply shot themselves in the foot for no apparent reason that I can fathom.

  6. Wondering whether all those people choosing to lug bottled water around with them and then deal with all the empties etc have EVER once tried a blind test to see whether they can tell the difference between the expensive bottled water and the free stuff that the ship distills and distributes through the taps.

  7. Due to a fluke, I was placed unexpectedly on a VIP list on at least four NCL cruises, so my reaction should be basically suspect. If you ARE on a VIP NCL list, you will be treated very well indeed.

That said, I liked my Carnival cruise also. But major caution...It was now ten years ago that I cruised thru the Panama Canal, and from 90% of what I read here these days, my experience with Carnival will never be recreated.

  8. Just saw this thread.....

    oh brother, more whining.....

    Geez

Quite obviously just "saw" it rather than actually read it. Still, it keeps yer post count up even if it makes you look foolish and contributes nothing worthwhile.

  9. As a former smoker and a usual balcony cruiser, I am very happy to see this change.

And I think the thought expressed above that a smoke-free ship in Florida might sell out is perhaps valid.

I also agree that Europeans are NOT gonna like this one bit. It is always a bit of a shock to walk into some place like a big airport in Italy and get knocked over by the wall of smoke inside. (well, maybe a few years ago now).

Not on this thread particularly, but I have seen smokers on other such discussions dismiss the complaints about smoking on balconies. It can and does travel instantly in the slipstream from where the smoker is smoking to other places where it may cause distress or even illness.

It would be nice to see them actually benefit from a policy change which is in almost everyone's best interest.

PS-No stats to back me up, but I have always FELT that smokers and heavy drinkers are represented in the cruise cohort in far larger numbers than in the general population. Maybe someone will pop up with some actual numbers to surprise or contradict me.

  10. Why do people think a Carnival ship is noisy all over? It's not. The worst place is Lido by the pool or a Jumbotron if the ship has one.

One reason they might think so could be if one of the posts above yours is true and they pipe in music (possibly unpleasant) without you being able to turn it off.

Another reason might be if they had perhaps shared a pier somewhere next to a Carnival ship and been forced to listen to the outdoor television screen.

Or perhaps they sailed Carnival before. Or family did. Or friends did.

Or maybe they read it here. Over and over.

    Maybe???

  11. One thing I noted on a 'different' cruise line, was that there was almost always a sign up saying all rooms were filled and don't ask to move.

It is a lie. They DO keep rooms open for unexpected VIPs, or for situations like burst plumbing or broken outer windows suddenly making some cabins absolutely uninhabitable. The sign is to try to mitigate the situation described above, where 70 people do not like their assigned cabin and want to move.

Sadly, my experience also taught me that the ones who made the biggest and nastiest fuss got much better results than those who were polite and considerate with their requests. IMO just the opposite SHOULD be the case.

  12. With the markup and amount of money that Carnival makes selling alcohol, I truly doubt whether they push very hard to encourage non-drinkers to cruise with them.

It was mentioned above that for beginners, a cruise may not be the best place to be, and I personally have to agree with that. The type and amount of drinking on cruises, particularly Carnival cruises, particularly on Spring Break and similar, is not conducive to comfortable abstinence.

When I cruised 'other' cruise lines, there were no bars in the library. It seems a bit preposterous somehow to have a bar there.
