1. I recently purchased this dress for my neice's christening ... Since I've never been on a cruise I'm not sure what is appropriate for formal night ... let me know what you think!!

ps I hope this worked lol

I think it's a very pretty dress and great for formal. I haven't been on Celebrity yet (next year on Reflecton) but it looks great to me !

  2. That's so funny, I was just at Dillard's looking at these bras, but didn't get one yet. There's ran about $32.-34.00. Do you know if they come "padded" also? Dillard's had both & I need all the help I can get, if you know what I mean!!! :D:D

I'm not sure about the padding. The brand at Target is made by the same company that makes the double-priced one at Macy's. A good thing about them is that you can position them and then with the clasp give yourself a flattering lift (and at my age that's the help I need!):o I have to go to Target tomorrow so I will see what they carry now and report back.

Once I bought a different type of sticky bra and it took my skin off with it! But this type is completely different than the old adhesive ones.

  3. I love those dresses, Judy and Drew's Wife...but I can't figure out what sort of bra I could wear with them since the back is open so far down. If you don't mind me asking, what do you wear with them?

Have you tried the sticky bras? My dd and I take some because then you don't have to worry about straps. I get them at Target. They are completely comfortable and reusable.

  4. Great find, and very elegant dress.

I would keep it simple and elegant, strappy evening sandals, (I usually bring strappy evening sandals that will work for multiple outfits), some jewelry, evening purse.

I can't see the embellisments very well, but I think I would probably choose yellow gold jewelry, necklace and bracelet.

    Black or gold shoes/purse.

Thanks! The embellishments are amber and gold and black. I think you're right about the gold jewelry even though I am usually a silver person. The neckline isn't as low on me as on the mannequin. I don't like to show too much cleavage. I have a nice long gown in red but maybe I'll go cocktail length second formal night.

  5. Hi everyone,

I spend way too much time reading this forum and looking at all your pretty clothes. I have booked our next cruise on the Celebrity Reflection for next February. We usually cruise NCL and we dress for dinner every night when we're on any cruise because we like to.:). Since we are cruising on a more formal line next time, I decided to go all out and get a long dress as opposed to the cocktail length ones I usually wear. It's by Kay Unger.

You'll have to imagine how I look in it because I don't have a picture of myself in it and even if I did I couldn't paste it because I have never learned how.

Anyway, I am in my 50's, tall and thin. I got the dress on EBay for $69 NWT and the tag was from Neiman Marcus $599. It fits really well which is always iffy when you buy something online.

Please have a look at it and give me some accessory advice!

    Thanks,

  6. Thanks i will show my hubby (afraid of water over his yet, but can swim) and my 12 year old daughter who is convinced she cant swim, but put a snorkel and mask on her and she is like a fish, just lacks the confidence which i understand if in the middle of the ocean and its choppy...........

Son and I have no problems with the water...............

Now me and heights are a whole different scenerio

Absolutely no water over anyone's head. That's why they say "butts up" (so you don't drag.) No heights either.

  7. Probably a silly question, but we are booked for our first cruise Feb 2014 on the Dawn and cant seem to find an excursion listed on NCL for while we are in port in Belize.

I am thinking maybe it would be a good thing to just skip getting off the boat and spend some time checking out the boat and enjoying the day on board. We do have 3 other ports that we will have activities planned for so thinking it may be nice to have a down day and some extra time on the ship to explore since i am sure the week will fly by.

Is it okay to do this? Do others do this? If we change our minds are we able to then get off upon arrival or do you need to have everything booked ahead of time?

Plenty of people stay on the ship in port. We loved all our Belize excursions but its up to you.

  8. Thanks for the compliments! I don't wear a lot of black so I wanted something else and just last week one of my colleagues said that purple is my color. So... I bought this.

There aren't a lot of us Finns here in Cruise Critic (or otherwise, only 5 million of us in the world) so it was nice to hear about your husband's Finnish roots. :) Have you ever been to Finland?

We haven't been to Finland but plan to when our youngest goes to college in a few years. My father-in-law was born in Maine but there was such an extensive Finnish community then he spoke only Finnish until he went to school. He went to Finland after he retired and people were amazed by his Finnish, except they said it was old fashioned (he was born in 1926.)

There is a Finnish church in Maine where he grew up and we go there occasionally- there are still a few elderly people there who speak mostly Finnish. Our daughter loves trying to sing hymns in Finnish and then eating all the nissua she can at the gathering afterwards.

And getting back to your dress, the purple is lovely. I started packing and black, black, black. Black with sequins, black and gold, black and white. I have one lavender floral silk that I am taking. It makes the shoes easier but I am tired of too much black.

  9. I saw this dress on eBay and I just had to have it, though we're not cruising until December.

It's chiffon so I hope it'll stay mostly wrinkle-free and even better, it doesn't weigh a lot in my suitcase. :D

I love that dress! We are cruising in two weeks and too much of my dinner wear is black.

PS My husband is of Finnish descent. His grandfather emigrated to Maine to avoid the Russian draft during World War 1.

  10. We are sailing on the Dawn in Feb 2013 with our 14 y.o. Last year was the first year she could go to the Teens Club and even though we were on a small, older ship- the Sun- and there weren't many teens on board, she had her best cruise ever. She didn't like the Epic the preceding year as much because she said it was harder to meet people. As she said, there are only so many times you want to go down a water slide and meeting other kids to do stuff is what makes a fun cruise. She made a couple of friends at the Teen Club on the Sun and they had a blast together the entire cruise.

The Dawn is a great ship- we were on it a few years ago and are glad to be able to re-sail it.

  11. I've often thought of doing that as well but when you do the math on gas, hotels and food it really never paid to drive, at least for me. But as you say, if its part of the vacation and you enjoy it then perhaps that's ok.

Yes, we would do it regardless of the price comparison with flying. My husband dislikes the flying hassle.

This year there were four of us. It cost about $1000 to drive, staying at Residence Inn two bedroom suites along the way and driving a small suv. I am thinking the air fare for four during the peak week we have to cruise (last week of February) would have been somewhat more.

We can't sail out of NYC in 2014 because the Gem's trip would mean my daughter missing too much school and the Breakaway itinerary doesn't appeal.

    It works for us.

  12. I'm in the same boat as you. Literally. We are from LI and would like to fly to MIA for the Epic that week. But if the fares are not reasonable, we will drive down and fly back. I would never do Amtrak back again. Did it 2 years ago and it was awful. I would rather drive through the night. My oldest will have his license in a few months so he could share some of the driving with me and DW. Maybe even go straight through...:o

I was going to suggest driving, too. We drive from NH every year. DH and I split the driving a do it in two days with an overnight in Richmond. We love the road trip part of our vacation. You get to see the country and we eat great barbecue along they way (especially at Dixie Bones in Woodbridge, VA.)

  13. And we HATE the freestyle dinning- they give you a beeper when a table is tready and once we had to wait 40 minutes!

Haven't been on RCCL in a while but don't rule them out.

I love freestyle dining. I don't want a set dining time because I don't always want to eat dinner at the same time or in the same place or with the same people every day. Obviously this is just my preference and I know many see it differently and enjoy traditional dining.

I have been on six NCL cruises and have never been given a beeper or waited more than 5 minutes for a table in the MDR. If you have reservations in a specialty restaurant there is no wait.

We are doing the Dawn for the second time next year.

  14. When we go out we usually tip approx. 20% to our server. Our next cruise is costing us $2200. 20% of that is $440. The service charge on NCL for 10 days for the 2 of us is $240. Even adding an extra tip to some workers, I feel that I am still ahead. As we say in New York "IT'S A DEAL!!!!!".

The last time we were on RCCL we were at a table with lovely people. One couple did not show up for the last nights dinner and I realized there were more empty seats around the dining room that night. Maybe I am wrong, but I think it had to do with those last night envelopes and not tipping the waiter.

    It is only my opinion,

    Jeanne

I agree. I hated those little envelopes on our first cruise (RCI). I found it totally embarrassing running around the ship looking for people, and I also noticed a surprising absence at the table on the last night. Also, I disliked my waiter and loved his assistant. I did the recommended but if it was on the NCL plan, I would find the assistant and slip him some extra while leaving the DSC in place. I think of the DSC as a minimum, and it saves me a lot of hassle. I enjoy recognizing a few outstanding crew members with the little appreciation cards they have at the desk and some $, usually the cabin steward and a favorite dining server and/or bar staff as well as people outside the tip pool, like the kids' club workers.

I would like to say that it's up to the passenger what to tip, but it aggravates me no end to see the giant line of people the last night getting the DSC removed.

  15. Truthfully I save money with the 15% added on as I would most likely tip more.

When I found that a bartender on the NCL Jewel was polite, conversational and mixed a good drink, I left extra.

I was on vacation and didn't count pennies or worry about it.

The automatic charges don't bother me.

This is my sentiment exactly. We also have gone back on the last evening at our favorite bar on the ship and left a substantial tip for our favorite servers.

  16. I agree. The winning dress was the only one that I felt positively about when it came down the runway. It seemed to me that many of the outfits- in addition to being just plain ugly- were not appropriate for a gala event. Like Seth Aaron's- I actually liked it but would anyone wear it to a ball? And IMHO shiny red satin has a strong tendency to look cheap.

Holy Moley on Jesus' dress. I am usually sympathetic to the designers when the judges question the taste level, but come on. So short- so bare- and then capped off by the rhinestone straps. (I must immediately go to Lifetime and read Chris March's blog!) And even though Emilio is a sarcastic guy, I agreed with him on Mila's star dress.

I like the show better in NYC!
