Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. The cashback hasn't been posted automatically. Amex has "escalated" the issue and is "confident" I should have it within ten business days ...
  2. That’s good to know, thank you Keith. My payment has been posted as three transactions, I’ve never seen a single transaction split like that, I have a screenshot of the single transaction on NCL if the credit doesn’t show up.
  3. I was delighted to see this offer—I've been waiting to see if one would show up before adding FAS+ and extra dining. Even though I checked out once, it shows three pending transactions on Amex, each less than £750. Hopefully, they will consolidate into one transaction. I've successfully obtained the statement credit twice by paying over the phone. As far as I know, this is the only way to make a partial payment. It is definitely worth only paying the £750 now—you may get another offer before the final payment is due.
  4. We were chatting to a guy on our Trade Routes cruise last year who we understood to be pretty senior in the Viking Rivers hierarchy. We both said we would love to try a river cruise but would never, ever, ever do one unless we could dine at a two-top. He seemed surprised by how much of a deal-breaker it was for us. We like chatting with folk, but we like being able to excuse ourselves if necessary, which is not easy when sharing a dining table.
  5. Viking told us that our April 2025 Homelands changed from Mariehamn to Tallinn about a month ago. Looking forward to seeing Tallinn.
  6. I’ve only ever seen Fever Tree in the “nightclub”, Torshavn. It was readily available there last April anyway. I’ve never asked for an unopened bottle to take back to the cabin but I may try it on my next trip. Elsewhere, sadly, it’s Schweppes, with artificial sweeteners, which I think are some of the worst things you can consume.
  7. I would take €100 at most out at a bank ATM when you arrive. Almost everywhere takes credit cards. If they don’t, I would wonder why any tax paying business wouldn’t accept credit cards.
  8. I somehow managed to reply to this in a different thread ... My experience is that Fever Tree Tonic is only available in the evening in Torshavn. It was readily available there in April 2023 when we did Trade Routes. It was the only tonic water we could drink on the ship, all other ones (not just diet versions) available at other bars contained artificial sweeteners. Awful stuff indeed.

  10. Another option perhaps is to book your own flights independently of Viking. We have only done it on cruises departing from Europe, the UK booking discount for not taking Viking air is modest, but better than nothing, and for us being in control is what is important.
  11. We were overwhelmed by the helpfulness of the staff at Bergen port last month. Specifically on the taxi question, they called us a taxi and it arrived in less than 5 minutes. We had also booked a transfer service to take our luggage to Oslo, we were taking the train, when they were late arriving the port staff called the company and reassured us that they were on the way. The young staff insisted on helping us with our luggage.
  12. We were in Falmouth and Portsmouth with Viking last month, no issues getting alcohol while in port at all. Def not a UK issue.
  13. Sadly I never found any San Pellegrino or other bottled sparkling water on the Jupiter the last two weeks. Not sure if a supply issue or a policy change. The free sparkling stuff is fine and I never did get round to asking why.
  14. It is a pain. Bad photos from the Jupiter last week, list seems same this week. By the glass wines are ok, not found a red entirely to my taste but the Pinot and the Nero d’Avola are fine and the New Zealand Greystone white is pleasant.
  15. 14 days until we leave for our Trade Routes sailing I’m spending most waking hours thinking cruise stuff so I’m particularly interested to read your thoughts. Growing up in the north of Scotland anything more than 10 degrees centigrade is a toes out kinda day but even I am packing a rain coat and lace up shoes (Allbirds have been life changing for my temperamental feet) for Bergen in April. But my feet will mainly be in Teva & Birkenstock sandals. My rain hat of choice is from the Canadian company Tilley, their waxed bucket hat and other hemp hats have worked well for me. I have new white Oakley sunglasses that I was be hanging on to for dear life, so interesting in others thoughts.
