  1. Delta's published exception fare policy seems pretty straightforward to me, unlike what you may get with other carriers.
  2. My family's experience with Viking Air was that Delta tickets booked to a V fare class, which is a deep discount fare type but NOT a Basic Economy ticket. Seat selection, elite benefits, and the ability to buy a 'guaranteed' C+ ticket all worked and redeemable miles and elite qualifying miles were accrued according to Delta's 'exception fare' rules. https://www.delta.com/us/en/skymiles/how-to-earn-miles/exception-fares
  3. The typical airline reservation and passenger management system has its roots on a 1970s mainframe and has been patched and updated rather than thoroughly rebuilt between then and now. Add in trying to get different airline systems within an airline alliance to talk to each other for code share tickets and different naming conventions in different cultures (an airline like Iberia may have two surname fields but no middle name fields) and the occasional odd result from travel agency software for tickets bought through that route and reputable airlines have a pretty high tolerance for letting a gate agent sort out the mangling of names the reservations software can cause. (The stories involving problems with mangled but basically correct names tend to come from ultra low cost carriers in financial difficulty whose managers have told employees to find any way possible to avoid paying EU compensation or create a US involuntary denied boarding scenario. Those airlines such as Wow typically no longer exist)

  5. What you can do is call Alaska customer service and ask them to link the passenger name record/PNR/record locator. Tickets and groups of tickets are contained in this virtual folder known as a PNR and linking PNRs is a manual entry in the system that will help (but not guarantee) keeping your party together in the event of flight delays or other irregular operations where you may need to be rebooked by the airline.

  7. A full two hour change is typically enough to trigger your option to change the ticket within reason or refund it. If there is a later flight into Phoenix, I'd ask them to put you on that later flight.
  8. Florida driver's licenses have been Real-ID compliant since at least 2010. (I remember going through the hassle that year and then was like 'maybe it's time to get a passport again since I have all necessary documents in one folder because of the stupid driver's license thing')

While there aren't a ton of domestic flights involving F, Delta seemed to have the 737s often parked at E concourse flipping back and forth between domestic and Caribbean routes a fair amount in 2019. Since E was originally international flights, it seems odd to be doing domestic routes near the 'giant ear of corn' gate. While it's definitely not 100& of the time, Delta does tend to cluster similar aircraft types, so if you're talking two flights both scheduled as Mad Dogs/717s, they're often not that far from each other.
  10. The minimum legal connection time I could find for most domestic flights at ATL is 35 minutes. (Which isn't me idea of the minimum sensible connection time there) If the connection goes below that, or if then change is more than 90 minutes, then it's a guaranteed free schedule change. Delta's customer service reps also have a decent amount of leeway to change tickets without a fee if you say you're uncomfortable with a connection that gets decidedly closer to the minimum, though it's not mandatory that they reroute or refund like it is for more than 90 or less than the MLCT.
  11. Also, if the two airlines are part of the same alliance, don't use the same frequent flyer number on both tickets. A note for those coming across the thread later on, if you have multiple bookings on Southwest and their computer system detects that it would be impossible to fly them because they overlap, it will start auto-cancelling bookings until their algorithm says you can make all the flights booked.
  12. The airline Minimum Equipment List (MEL) for safe and allowed operation is a strange beast. A plastic cover is a delay reason, but then over Christmas, I was on a flight with an inoperable Auxiliary Power Unit, which not only powers the heat & air conditioning while on the ground but is also needed to start the main airplane engines. The pilot came on with a 'Well folks' explanation on why the plane sounded different durkng boarding because we were running power from the airport to keep the heat on and other technical stuff and it filtered down to my mind that 'so the FAA says it's safe for a plane to fly even if they have to jump start the engines?' and apparently it is.
  13. Mechanical delays can happen and aren't anything to worry about from a safety standpoint. Everything on a commercial airplane involves heavily redundant systems and there are incredibly detailed requirements for commercial air operations in the USA and European Union realm. A mechanical delay can be for something as small as an inoperable pa system, burned out emergency light bulb, or a lack of plane safety cards in every seat back pocket.
  14. Tall folks are the group who is actually better off paying for extra leg room or exit row seating in economy class, even if it's otherwise the same economy seat and amenities.
  15. Also, it's a DFW connection so it's an American flight, and their operational reliability is a bit of a hot mess right now.
