  1. I would say because its touristy (near a resort) and that its basically enclosed by a jetty (making it not a great beach). It's perfectly fine to kill some time and take a quick dip. To elaborate on what Scott said, you just need to read the room. Just know that there is anti visitor sentiment and it can pop up here and there. Not something you will see in most of the more touristy areas that you'll be in, but places like Hana you can certainly run into it. As an example, the Hana road was closed to anyone but residents for most of Covid and a lot of the locals would like to keep it that way. When it did open there were plenty of beaches that you would see a sign saying "locals only" even though all beaches in Hawaii are technically public. Plenty of other beach options rather than stir the pot.
  2. If you want to splurge a bit and have fantastic amenities (like a rooftop restaurant and rooftop pool that overlook the Acropolis) my favorite hotel in town is the Hotel Grande Bretagne. Part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, you can sometimes get great deals using Bonvoy points.
  3. Not any more or less than you would at say the Jersey Shore. They certainly exist there but sort of come in and out in waves. We've been there numerous times and have had zero jellyfish and have been there and there were so many Portuguese man o'war in the water that you couldn't swim. There is no way to predict them but June the water is still cool enough that it's not a usual occurrence. We've always had more issues (and again, not often) later in the season in August/Sept when the water is warmer.
  4. Unless there is some significant issue or congestion, Princess ships will embark in Brooklyn. Occasionally can get bumped to Manhattan if the QM2 is in port as well etc. Do you plan on staying a night prior to embarking or flying in the day of? If you are staying somewhere the night before, whether that's in Brooklyn or Manhattan, I would grab things there at a Duane Reed/CVS etc and bring them with you to embark. Red Hook has come a long way but not a super pedestrian area right there by the cruise terminal and not a lot to choose from there. A few dollars per bag is completely adequate for embarkation. We usually will put 2 large bags through and I will give them $10.
  5. They might be just being bigger penny pinchers than other lines that might eat the cost for the benefit of guest experience. Again, we don't have the official reason but it has to be something with taxes and a business decision that NCL made that others didn't.
  6. Its a different type of booking-- a day use rate is specific to an early check in and check out in the late afternoon. Some hotels offer it, some don't, and some only offer it if there is space. But you wouldn't make a regular overnight booking-- you would specifically book a day use rate to get a morning check in. You can do it with Marriott family hotels by using code "ZDY". https://help.marriott.com/s/article/Article-23598
  7. Its called the St Marks Campanile. Its fine-- it can be crowded and there are more interesting places to get great views of Venice. As cruisemom mentioned, while a lower vantage point, the Loggia Cavalli gives great views over the square. One of Venice's great views is atop the famed Hotel Danieli just off Piazza San Marco. You can skip the super expensive meal now and just have drinks at Terrazza Danieli bar which provides the same views as those paying an arm and a leg for lunch or dinner. There are also other campanile around town you can climb. Keep in mind that the San Marco Campanile is a replica finished in 1912 after the original one collapsed so while historic, it's not the original.
  8. It's most likely that there is some additional tax or duty on spirits and cigarettes that's specific to Livorno that NCL doesn't want to have to pay. Clearly it's not because alcohol is banned outright.
  9. I'll second either of these. Newport also has a great dining/drinking scene that can make for a fun afternoon. Easy to walk along the wharf and pop in and out of places. Some favorites are the water front bar/restaurant at Forty1 Degrees North Hotel, The Black Pearl on the wharf, and the lawn at Castle Hill Inn (you'll want a quick Uber) is stunning.
  10. If you don't get off the ship and spend time in Maui, honestly I don't know what the point of taking a Hawaiian cruise was in the first place. It's a cultural center-- something between a community center and an Elks Lodge. https://www.mauijungalow.com/2012/11/hale-nanea-hidden-hawaiian-cultural.html Scott has hinted at this but I'll be a little more blunt-- the beach you are looking at is most likely a locals hang out and the locals do not want you there. This can range from just general distain and dirty looks all the way up to flat out confrontation. It's best to stay out of the local hangouts as a tourist in Hawaii. There are some fabulous beaches in Maui-- some of the highest rated in the world. Anything on the west side resort area is beautiful with a ton of services for day guests. You don't need an excursion-- you can easily take a taxi each way from the ship to a ton of beach options which will give you a great day off the ship and show you a little bit of an amazing island.
  11. If you would rather be in Atlantic City an extra night (vs an airport hotel in Newark) there's really no reason why you couldn't easily commute from AC to the pier the day of departure-- its only about a 2 hour drive straight up the Garden State Parkway. If you were up and out, conservatively at 8-9am, you would have the car dropped off and over to the pier by 12-1pm with plenty of buffer time. I'd personally enjoy that a lot more than staying by the airport.
  12. As Horseman says, many trains a day and quite easy. For your stay in Montreal, if you want to avoid a lot of cabs/Ubers and if fits in your budget, you can stay at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth. The hotel is directly on top of the Gare Central and you can literally take a discreet elevator from the lobby to the train station.
  13. It’s also not practical in that you’ll pay the hefty airport rental car taxes twice (that are usually not shown in your initial rental cost when booking). Not as much of an issue at a non airport rental location but in all likelihood the overall cost would be more expensive than 2 days on the same reservation,
  14. I would agree here-- there is zero reason to purchase an expensive ship tour in Newport unless you have some onboard credit you are trying to burn.
  15. Inside The Breakers, Marble House, and most other mansions operated by the Newport Preservation Society you can take pictures without flash and exterior pictures however you want. They do not allow pictures in Hunter House but that's not usually on the agenda for most folks that are touring. Another very interesting option is to tour Doris Duke's Rough Point mansion, which is located further down from Marble House. It is run separately from most of the other mansions but it was lived in by her as recently as 1993, so provides a different more "modern" perspective than the other mansions which were stuffed and mounted in the 1950s and early 60s.

    Gambling

Alaska has a much longer history with gambling and loose women than Hawaii does...
  17. Way too broad-- what's the budget? Rooms in Charleston can run from low $200s for a 2-3 star to $700-800 a night for a 5 star and everything in between.
  18. The bus works or it's like a $12 Uber for up to 4 people to Whalers Village if you don't want to wait for the bus.
  19. With Dial7 and Carmel the driver doesn't work for the company-- everyone who drives for them is a third party independent contractor. So it doesn't surprise me that issues like this come up.
  20. Similar to what you said I was going to say that there is a small sand area (tough to call it a beach) at the very beginning of the breakwater behind the elementary school. You access it by walking down along the harbor along Wharf and then onto Canal St. I was just there a few weeks ago to catch a glimpse of the old Rotterdam (now Borealis) that was anchored off Lahaina. It is VERY rocky-- not recommended but if you must get into the water in Lahaina proper you could in theory do it there.
  21. Currently yes, but they will be charging 5 euros per person starting soon-- was just announced. No timed tickets but there will be an entrance fee.
  22. Yes-- you can of course visit on your own. I believe they sell combination tickets that include both the Colosseum and Forum. It's been since 2018 since I was there so I'm not sure if they are timed or not. Our hotel concierge took care of getting them for us but I'm sure someone has a website.
  23. The question is a bit broad-- what is your budget? You could get a hotel near that station but it puts you outside of, but just on the edge of, the main tourist area. From a walking and touring perspective there are more centrally located options if you head a little more into the center of town. From the station you would be about a half hour walk from the Colosseum and 45min+ to the Pantheon. My point is you could avoid having to use multiple taxis/Ubers from a hotel near Ostiense each day by just taking one to a more centrally located hotel the first day. Again-- this will also all depend on your budget and touring plans which we don't know so its hard to make a specific recommendation.
  24. The locals are going to crucify you for saying San Fran (or even worse, Frisco).
