  1. I cancelled. I figure if things get better, I'll get a great deal. Or not. I just don't want to lose my deposit...
  2. I wanted to do the same but my Travel Agent said the 1000 off meant I lost all of my OBC and the aft wasn't a guarantee
  3. I'm thinking of cancelling for now. The full payment is due in April. I think there will plenty of room even if I rebook in May. I already have my flights to Anchorage and return from Vancouver so I really WANT and kind of NEED to go unless I give up the flights too. We have a Neptune aft suite. Do these book up quickly?
  4. I'm curious what perks you might mean. He got nothing! He said he'd book our flights for us without charging us his usual 50 dollar fee but we ended up booking them ourselves. Can I transfer him back off? I'm just so annoyed that he's done nothing to help.
  5. So I went online and looked around and the cabin type we chose (Neptune alt) is best price through HAL that I can find. Plus I got the OBC and free gratuities. I guess I got a good deal. Regardless we will have fun. Darn TA is getting the big commission for doing nothing.
  6. Actually I booked it myself online. I guess it was a promotion through HAL since I booked it a year in advance - no clue if it's a good deal or not........ I never cruised before so I didn't know differently, but I wonder if I would have gotten a better deal through the agent. This agent actually asked to take over the cruise after I booked it and I stupidly agreed thinking he would be helpful with other things. As it turns out, I booked my own air, my own helicopter and now I'm waiting for him to get the train tickets back after the Dyea Dave tour that I booked myself. At first he told me that there were no train tickets (it's true that on the train website they don't go on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). It took me one email to find out that you have to call them yourself. He said he'd do that, but he hasn't done so yet.
  7. I don't mind at all. My suite came with 1600 OBC and my daughter's cabin came with 400. The OBC came from HAL when I booked.
  8. I spoke to a different agent yesterday. She did indeed find a wait-list reservation which she emailed me. She said indeed it is a special type of wait list and 100% guaranteed. She said it doesn't happen often that they allow OBC to be used - and that our CC will be charged upon disembarkment for the balance. We won't pay ahead of time - nothing on our CC prior to the cruise. She said it has happened before and there's never a problem... She said they have removed the tour for purchase (removed 4 of 6 tickets on the 10:15 am helicopter tour) so it's ours. My TA spoke to them and said they told him the same thing. Thank you for planning your cruise vacation with Holland America Line. Please keep this email as confirmation that you've been added to the waitlist shown below. Once the Shore Excursion Tour becomes available, we will notify you by email with instructions on how to complete the purchase. You will then have 72 hours to make your purchase before the space is released to the next person on the waitlist. 9. Well I was there with my adopted daughter from China on a heritage tour. In fairness I was with a Chinese guide and my daughter who speaks some of the language so maybe it was "easier," for us to use cash. It was definitely easier than using a credit card. I was able to use my card in Shanghai at a nice restaurant. Yes, there were cash machines in some of the nicer hotels, but I found it easier to just have the cash. I never worried about being robbed (beyond the concern in any large city of course). It's certainly an experience more than a vacation. I treasure the memories. Ellen
  10. I was in Beijing last summer (not on a cruise). Even getting cash is hard. You need to bring crisp, new 100 US bills to exchange. ATM's are difficult to use. Exchange cash in US and bring it. That's my suggestion. I was there for 17 days (all over China). I brought 1000 in Chinese currency and had American hundreds. We were able to use cash at restaurants, but not credit cards. Be sure to get a VPN if you want to use internet. I used Panda VPN which was free. Have fun!
  11. Yeah but if I heard her correctly she’s saying I won’t be charged until I board July 12. She’s definitely not dishonest I agree she could be wrong. I will certainly call Monday thank you guys so much!
  12. Big cruise ship I meant it's a big cruise line. I'm new to cruising. I just meant that she (the agent) I'm sure was totally honest and believes she booked it just right. But once you board (which is in July) who knows if the line and the agent have it ... I'm not sure exactly what I mean. I just mean it's not a small company like Dyea Dave who doesn't pre-charge. Thank you all. I will call Monday and reiterate my concerns and say if she is unable (not her fault) to provide that to cancel it and I'll pay out of pocket. I would rather absorb the cost than miss it! Again thank you so much and I apologize for being so "green." 🙂 Ellen
  13. Thank you for your replies. They didn't say anything about charging my credit card other than the cost beyond the 2000. She said she was using the OBC and would charge the rest of my card. I thought she meant when we boarded but it's fine if she does it now. I looked at my card and no charge -though it was Friday at 4 pm EST so might not have gone through yet. I wouldn't like it if they charged 2400 now, but I would live with it. I asked for an email confirmation and she said I'd get one closer to the sailing date which didn't make me very comfortable. I totally believe her - she couldn't have been nicer. I told her my biggest concern was that the large cruise line wouldn't have the reservation at the time of sailing and it would be too late. She told me not to worry. I still worried so I posted. She even told me the time I am booked (10:15 am). It was all verbal - but she said she could see the reservation.
  14. Hello! I will be cruising Alaska in July 2020. When we booked, we were given $2000 OBC (total for our 2 rooms). I called the excursion desk and was able to get us 4 tickets on the helicopter tour in Juneau with the credit (she -said the balance to be charged to our credit card - 599 per person). I know it's a bit cheaper if you book it independently. But great deal if it's not too good to be true. She (Lovely lady from excursion desk on the phone) said it's booked as a wait-list, but it's not a wait-list like other wait-lists. She said it's back office wait -list which means that it's not really wait-list. She said if I go on the website, it will show that 4 of the tickets will be sold. She said no worries - I have the excursion. I love using the OBC for this, but it's a not-to-be-missed for us. I worry something will go wrong... Thoughts? THANK YOU
  15. Thank you again! The cruise excursion manager (I think she's the manager) said I could use my OBC for the helicopter. She said that she was putting it down as a wait list but it's not really a wait -list. cost 599 a person - I realize that's more, but IF it's really my OBC it's worth it because I have 2000 of OBC which I won't use (all of). But she said call her in 3 days because she has to double check this with her supervisor. I realize she might come back and say the supervisor said no in which case I will book on my own. Questions: If she says yes - should I feel confident? I do not want to miss the helicopter - rather pay. Second - is it okay for the TA to book it if I don't go with the cruise company? He said 2100 for the 4 of us through his provider. THANKS
