Apparently, different cruise directors choose to use different names. Formal, and Dress to Impress, seem to be the most popular in our experience over the last 18 months. We always dress up on those two (or three, on a 12-night) evenings; some do, some do not.
What ship will you be on, and how long?
Harmony of the Seas.

It's been a while since we cruised. I always enjoyed getting all dressed up for elegant evenings. We will be cruising on Royal Caribbean in November. Is it correct that they no longer have elegant nights?

Thank you all so much! No, we have definitely never been on an Oasis class ship. I'm not sure how well I will like such a huge ship. The shows sound wonderful so I don't want to miss them! Thanks again!

It's been awhile since we've cruised so I am totally unfamiliar with needing reservations for shows. We will be on Harmony of the Seas in November. When and how is the best way to make reservations for the shows?

I'm not sure how to get from Civitavecchia to Ostia Antica (it's an easy train ride from Rome) but a visit to the site is definitely worth it. Was the highlight of one of my trips to Rome. Seeing the mosaic floors in situ, walking the streets and sitting on the steps of the 6th century BCE theater are a wonder not to be missed. Similar to Pompeii but much more intimate.
Or consider an "underground" tour of Rome. The Scavi Tour under the Vatican and St. Peter's, or the 1st century pagan temple under the Basilica of San Clemente, or the Catacombs, or the roman house Le Domas Romane di Palazzo Valentini. The Scavi Tour is one that needs to be arranged ahead of time and is a very fascinating tour.
There's amazing history everywhere you turn in Rome. you can't go wrong. My son's highlight of our stay in Rome was a Segway tour!
Thank you so much. Those are some great sounding ideas! My planning has been kind of on hold with the uncertainty of weather our cruise will take place.😥

Thank you so much. I'll check out your other posts. I would be very happy to stay in Rome and check out some lesser known sites.

My husband and I will be at this port for 12 hours this September. We have already been to Rome and toured the high points of that city. Does anyone have any ideas of other things to see and do in or around this area?

No they won't. Only one 750 ml or smaller bottle per person. Even if you try to convince them that there's 2 people, so 1.5 liters is the same amount, they don't let it through.
Thanks, that's good to know.

I am about to take my 2nd cruise and both times we fly in the day off. I guess I just like living on the edge. LOL
Don't do it!! We missed a cruise a few years ago doing that. That is no fun!!

If I brought a 1.5 liter bottle of wine will Carnival take it?

Mickey- I cruised the Carnivale in 1990 in March- when did you cruise? I'm wondering if he was our CD and I didn't even know it!
We were on in Dec. You would have known if he were the CD. He was everywhere running everything! Cruising was very different back then wasn't it.
-
We took our first cruise on the Carnivale in 1990 to celebrate our 25th Ann. and John Heald was our CD. We will be on the Pride in Jan. to celebrate our 50th it would have been so neat if he would have been our CD again. Sounds like not the case.

I contacted Carnival who wouldn't even talk to me since I booked with a TA. I talked to my TA and it sounds like Carnival has just disregarded my form since it was not done by her so that's that I guess. I'll keep watching for the next price drop.
-
Has everyone who filled in the forms for the price drop on the 12 hr. sale heard from Carnival by now?
I had booked my cruise through a TA but by the time I saw the 12 hr. sale my TA's office was closed for the day and the sale would be over by the time they opened in the morning. I filled out the form myself and as of yet have not heard a thing. I wish I would hear one way or the other. Do I have a chance of getting the price drop even though the form was not filled out by my TA?

Great suggestions! I wish we would have more time to do this shopping but every minute is accounted for so I will have to be fast about it. I'm not complaining as I want to see as much as possible in the short 8 days we have to tour (this is a land tour not a cruise but, being a cruise person I have learned to love this site for travel tips). It seems there is never enough time on any trip! I am just so blessed to get the chance to go!!

Eilat stone when set in silver is quite inexpensive. You will see it everywhere and some are used by very talented craftsmen. Many other semi-precious stones are cheaper than in the states as is gold jewelry .
You can also by beautifully embroidered children's ad women's blouses, skirts and dresses.
There are several brands of Dead Sea cosmetics which make good gifts provided your not sold a bill of goods that they do any more than any cosmetics which do not contain fragments of dead sea water.
The Dead Sea is great for your skin provided, you bathe in it often for a length of time, as I did for years.
Thanks for the ideas. I'm not a real shopper when traveling but have family I feel the need to bring something and of course I need something as a memento.

What are some of the best inexpensive things to buy in Israel as gifts for people back home and as souvenirs for ourselves. We will have very little time for shopping so would like to have some good things in mind.

Just a lump of coal in my stocking.

I use a Capitol One Venture card. It pays 2% on everything. I also pay it off every month. The cruise we are taking in Jan. will be paid entirely using my cc points.

So, do all of you getting this offer play in the casino often? I don't gamble so that would leave me out. I guess it's like they say you can't win if you don't play.

Ours was the Carnivale 24 years ago. It bore very little resemblance to the cruise ships today but it was still a good time. We were in a port hole room. The beds were apart and bolted to the floors. The pictures were bolted to the wall. I always remember this because one of the pictures was crooked and I kept wanting to straighten it but couldn't be done. Obviously, the stabilizers didn't work as well back then. I got sick the first night.

That is very strange though that all the prices would double. I had this happen once and it turned out that when I was looking at the prices I had forgotten to change the 1 cruiser to a 2 so I was paying for a single in a room rate. Make sure that isn't what happened to you.
Elegant nights?
