  1. We have been on NCL ships many times where my wife has had to check in with the Restaurant Managers on the different shipsmand also the Maitre' D at each restaurants to let them know about her food allergies. We have had nothing but great meals in specialty restaurants were we are only the two of us.

We were thinking of eating at Teppanyaki but would have some concerns with a larger group number one, having the chef cook all the meats and shellfish on the same grill and the chances of cross contamination of food. Not sure if they use peanut oils on the grills?

Anyone had any experience with this restaurant and food allergies?

    Thanks

I sailed on the Gem severals years ago, I have a shellfish allergy. They cooked my entire meal in the kitchen, Nothing on my plate came off the grill. Everything was hot and delicious

  2. We are on the Breakaway next month. Is JC a man? woman? Did you like JC?

    Thanks

JC is a male. He is entertaining when you see him which isn't often. He will be present at all the main shows in the Atrium and in the theatre. I loved Dan the Man when he was CD on the BA. He had an infectious laugh and seemed to get into the spirit of everything. Julie was the next cruise director we met when we sailed BA last year. She was ok. I guess Dan the Man ruined it for me, like I said I loved him the three times I sailed with him. I wonder what ship he is on today.

  3. I was questioned after getting off the Gem two years ago regarding jewelry I purchased. I listed everything I purchased on that cruise. I had other jewelry with me which I did not say anything about since i brought it with me. The problem was I keep my jewelry in original boxes. They tore my luggage apart and "found" what I told them I had. I paid the duty but they gave me a really hard time about my other jewelry I had. We argued back and forth about the other jewelry in boxes and they finally stopped after a supervisor came out. I have a friend who was in charge of the ports in NY until he retired. He told me customs has the right to access all information regarding your on board purchases prior to disembarking. They are ready for you when you go thru and pull you right out. Nothing is random,if you buy jewelry on the ship declare it. They were convinced my other jewelry was purchased off the ship which they would have no knowledge of. They do profile people also and they will not answer anything you ask them, they will explain nothing. Terrible experience and it was not necessary to be treated so rudely and like a criminal.

  4. I sailed last month on the Breakaway. One night I got the super free spins on a Wonder Four machine on the FireLight game I was playing 2.40 a spin and ended up with 204 free spins payout was $1,987. The next morning I won on a Wonder Four machine again, not the same one, super fee spins on the Firelight game, ended up with $1,750 payout. Also won $900 on Mr Cashman Enchanted Eyes machine by Bar 21. Last year same cruise I won over $2,500 on Wonder Four machines super games on Firelight again. Casino has been good to me. Also saw a $15,000 winner on Quick Hit during the bonus spin round, $4,000 was won by someone on poker. $8,000 by someone else, not sure the machine. Guess we had a lucky cruise.:) And my winnings accompanied me home. :D

  5. But, I will keep it to my biggest pet peeves by the rudest passengers.

Pushing their way onto the elevator you were waiting patiently for.

Cutting in front of you at the buffet almost knocking your plate out of your hands.

Allowing doors to close in your face, instead of holding them open for you.

Screaming in your ear while they are standing behind you to get someone's attention who is in front of you.

    Banging on your cabin door.

Playing music so loud on their balcony which is next to yours you can't hold a conversation.

Allowing their children to run around unsupervised and causing havoc

Coughing or sneezing in your face.

I could go on, but I'll stop here

  6. First cruise I used the Scope patch behind my ear, heard it was the best way NOT to get seasick, well I was sick before we left the Hudson River. Finally called the ship dr at 9 pm because I was literally green (so everyone I was traveling with told me). He said I was having a reaction to the patch and to take it off immediately, which I did. Dramamine after that, no problems. I will take my 11th cruise very soon and I take Bonine, start the night before we leave. Take it twice a day, never any problems, and I have been in some rough weather. Hope you have a great cruise.

  7. Just got off the Gem February 7, 9 days to the Caribbean. Was also on the Breakaway in November to Bahamas. While on the Breakaway I missed the Spinnaker and the shows, the Atrium on Breakaway doesn't do it for me as far as having the shows there. I did not like the pool layout on the Breakaway, prefer it on the Gem. And I loved the two BBQ's we had last week. Miss that when on the Breakaway. Love the White Hot Party, the 80's party and 70's party on the Breakaway don't have the same feel. Entertainment (Rock of Ages, Burn the Floor, etc) on the Breakaway can't be beat, rooms layouts better especially the bathroom and shower on the Breakaway. Gem needs some repairs (cosmetic) lots of torn cushions, etc. Bottom line I loved both ships but would probably take Breakaway if I could, Gem would be second in line, but whatever ship is going where I want to go, thats the one I will be on. As you can see it's Breakaway again in 34 days.

  8. Agree. There is a children's program available for those parents who don't want to supervise their own children. I believe the program has different age groups also, so there is really no excuse for unsupervised children. Either enroll them in the program or watch them yourself, after all you decided to bring them on your vacation.

  9. It is a terrible tragedy what has occurred on the Breakaway. First I want to say I am a parent. Second I want to say I am responsible for the well being of my child. If I take my children on vacation I should know where they are and what they are doing. I should not be sunbathing in one area while my children are running around where they do not belong and most of all I should not have the expectation someone will watch out for their well being. I say this because I was on a cruise in November where two children approximately 10-12 years old were running around the adult pool area using the lounges like trampolines, cannonballs into the pool intentionally trying to land ON people, running along the top area of the pool kicking water into people faces. We (about 4 of us) watched this go on for approximately an hour, no parents ever showed up, so we stopped one of the children as she was ready to run and kick water at us once again and reprimanded her. Low and behold five minutes later two angry parents appear that we had the audacity to reprimand their children. Well they got blasted by the people who their children were tormenting for the past hour. In the end the father made the one child come and apologize to everyone she had abused for the last hour. I know there is a lot of controversy about the lifeguard issue, but from what I have witnessed not only here at the pool but elsewhere on the ship from unsupervised children I don't think lifeguards would really solve the problem. In the end I still believe we all need to follow the rules all over the ship and parents take care of your children don't expect everyone else to do that for you while you enjoy your vacation. Don't misunderstand I am not saying no one was supervising those two children. None of us know the entire story and I am sure the parents are devastated but everything is not the fault of the cruise line. I am sure they are looking into how this happened and do their best to make sure it doesn't happen again but we all have to do our part also.

  10. I've been on the Gem several times, loved everything about it. I have stayed in ocean view rooms up to the Deluxe Owners Suite and loved them all. The shows, the staff were great. I;ve eaten at the specialty restaurants and will do the same this cruise, Cagneys is always a treat. Le Bistro and La Cucina have never disappointed. I enjoyed the MDR and the buffet also. Breakfast outside at the Great Outdoors is very enjoyable on a nice sunny day. I will be happy to be back in the Spinnaker Lounge (I miss this on the Breakaway). White Hot Party is lots of fun and the shows like Dancing with the Gem Stars and Not so Newlywed game are always good for a few laughs. I highly recommend the ship. Hope you have a great trip.

  11. Just got off the Breakaway two weeks ago. We saw Burn the Floor, it was a good show for adults, kids I think would be bored after awhile. It was all different types of dancing. I saw it once that was enough. Rock of Ages I enjoyed but not for kids. Howl at the Moon are the dueling pianos, they are lots of fun and the people in the audience really make the show. You bring them requests with money of course and they sing them. Lots of audience participation. Ok for kids before 11 pm then it becomes more of an adult show. We also saw Second City, don't think kids will appreciate it. I thought it was funny, if you like improv you will like the show. Fat Cats is all jazz and blues, great music. I think the best show for kids is Cirque, we did not attend but some who did with children loved it. Fire and Ice that appear in the Atrium as well as the theatre should not be missed. Then you always have "Dancing with the Breakaway Stars" which is fun, plenty of kids present. We always enjoy this show, its always fun to attend. There is a drive in movie on deck 16 one night on deck 16, they were showing Skyfall, beautiful night it was fun. The 80's night party of deck 16 was great and the fireworks the kids will definitely love. Take advantage get dressed up in 80's costumes there were prizes. Family karaoke in Bliss lounge was fun too. Another night they showed Spiderman in the atrium on the big screen. They also had the kids out there dancing. There's lots to do for everyone and lots to enjoy

  12. My husband uses a C-pap and he called NCL they told him they will supply the water free of charge, it's British airways we are having trouble with not counting it as a carry on, they asked for our doctors number so they will call to verify

I called NCL twice regarding the water and they were clear it would not be available onboard, Fascinating, different answers same question. Instead of carrying the gallon onboard we purchased two long cylindrical water bottles that we filled and closed, they fit perfectly in my backpack and we had plenty of water for the week.

  13. My husband and I both have CPAP'S. We sailed on the Jewel this past November. I brought two extension cords and a power strip. We had one CPAP on each side of the bed on the small bedside tables and ran the extension cords under the bed into the power strip and plugged that into the outlet near the dressing table. I know the layout for Breakaway may be different but we are planning on doing the same thing. We are sailing on the Breakaway in June and I plan on calling my PCC a week or so before just to make sure there are no surprises. If you use distilled water, like we do, you should bring your own, they do not supply it and it is not available at all on the ship. At least that;s what we were told.

  14. My first cruise was on Celebrity Meridian from New York to Bermuda in July 1994. I got so seasick I wanted to die, so I can't say I got addicted at this point. I found out during the cruise, after a call of desperation, to the ships doctor, that the Scop patch I had on was actually making me sick. So off it came and a couple hours later I was feeling better after some Dramamine. I didn't cruise for a long time after. I really got hooked after our Carnival cruise to Canada and that one was on the tail of a hurricane that stalled over the Mid Atlantic area. I later found out the Meridian sunk off the coast of somewhere, not really sure where or why. Now I try to cruise every year and loving it.
