  1. We had a lanai cabin on the Maasdam a year ago on a South Pacific cruise, and we loved it. It is smaller, and the sliding door is heavy, but being right on the walking deck was so great. And I, especially, loved the deck chairs where I could put up my feet. We had a slight problem at the beginning with others sitting in our reserved chairs, but they were gracious, and we had no further problems on the trip. If this cabin is available on future cruises, we will take it!
  2. My husband and I had a lanai stateroom on the Maasdam for the South Pacific cruise last spring, and we enjoyed it very much. We like to walk, and it was convenient to have direct access to the Promenade Deck. We also enjoyed our own deck chairs right outside our cabin. We felt less isolated than in a veranda (which we had on other trips). But this cabin will not be for everyone--the storage is less and the cabin is slightly smaller. We did not have any problems with people on the outside seeing in; during daylight hours, the windows were reflective, and we kept the curtains drawn at night (with chip clips!). Outside noise was not a problem; we could hear the tenders being lowered on tender port days, but we were up and dressing and it was not a distraction.
  3. I have an additional question pertaining to this topic. What about various bars around the ship? Are wine packages *=(4, 6, or 8 bottle packages) consumable in the Crows Nest or Ocean Bar?
  4. It's been about eight years since my husband and I took this cruise, but we used a tour operator in St. Petersburg called "Red October"!!! I got a kick out of the name, but they were really wonderful. They arranged the Russian visa and set up a great two-day tour of the area that included the Hermitage, a boat tour, Peterhof, Catherine's Palace, and many beautiful churches. I'm a history teacher, and I knew what I wanted to see, and I could not get what I wanted with the ship's tours (either Peterhof or Catherine's Palace but not both with the ship's tours). Our guide was Irina, a Master's level student in English--she was wonderful. Our driver (of our Mercedes!) was Sasha, a former KGB agent! It was not cheap, but I doubt we will ever be able to do this again. We had a wonderful time, and I highly recommend Red October.
