Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. I've not needed assistance (yet), but your airline could probably arrange chair or cart easier than you trying to do it through the airport. Just a thought. Safe travels!
  2. We've used Uber multiple times in the past year. From the port to the airport was about $5 USD at the time we travelled. From the airport to the port was about $15. It all depends on the time of day, the demand and whatever.... But Uber was very inexpensive and we had no issues with the drivers nor the quality of cars they drove. Have Fun!
  3. I'll haveb to check out True Detectives. We too would go on Hurtigruten again. We have two cruises booked this year, but not on Hurtigruten. We have the month of May on Seabourn's Pursuit in the South Pacific (Papua New Guinea, Solomons, etc.) And then almost a month on Regent Seven Seas' Splendor from Lisbon down the west coast of Africa to Cape Town. If Mike doesn't have plans he gets antsy. Safe travels wherever you go next! Linda
  4. @doobieb - We had a great time on the MS Trollfjord but the Northern Lights only showed themselves once on our two-week journey and we missed them (probably around 2- 2:30 in the morning). One of our neighbors on the ship did get pictures. We really enjoyed the trip and the suite experience was great. The food in Rost was excellent as was our waiter/ sommelier. The ports were so much fun. Mike and I did an alternate dog sledding trip in Tromso where he did the mushing for about an hour. The Bucket-list trip we had booked was oversold and we were given two options. I was the passenger in the sled and had the opportunity to mush half the trip, but did not think I could do the brake so Mike was in for the run. Overall, our experience was great. Being our 3rd Hurtigruten trip and our 3rd ship, we would keep them on our list of lines to consider for future travel. I hope are safe and warm in northern Alabama! We're good in middle Alabama! Safe travels, Linda
  5. Thank you for your review. We join the Trollfjord Tuesday! Mike and Linda
  6. We arrived in Oslo Friday. Glad you're having a great time. We board on Tuesday. Say hello to Alabama for us! Mike and Linda, Wedowee, AL
  7. Hello Tashaaa, I agree with everything CDNPolar stated. We were on the Fram December 2022 (In Depth Antarctica...) and on the Nansen (Disco Bay, Greenland). Both were expedition and had the same amenities. We did not do a drink package and thought drinks were reasonable. Optional (extra cost) excursions were by lottery in Antarctica on the Fram. The demand in Greenland was less and I don't remember a lottery for excursions. Whatever you decide, it should be a fantastic trip! Linda
  8. Same info here. The Atlanta consulate is not accepting applications at this time.
  9. This morning we spoke to our travel agent, Seabourn and the agency Seabourn uses for visa services. At this point none of them knows what will be needed by Brazil. We are booked from Miami on 29 September to Manaus on 24 October. Since we will be on-board the day visas become required on 1 October it is a concern. The visa agency has recommended we contact them again on 1 September. The last time we were in Brazil was 2010 (on a visa long expired). The process then required that passports be brought/mailed to the Consulate in Atlanta and the picked up/ mailed back to us. We lived in Georgia at the time. The process was about 2 weeks then - before e-visas were in place. Hopefully this is worked out soon for all of us. Safe travels! Mike and Linda
  10. GottaKnowWhen, Thanks for the detailed information about your cruise. We just booked for the March 4th 14-day cruise. Can you verify that Windstar uses the port in Old Town? I will assume they will use the same port each time in San Juan. We have been to San Juan several times but never on a cruise and know there is another port. This will be our first time on the Pride. We were on the Legend twice before the stretch and on the Surf and the Spirit. Thanks for your help. Mike and Linda
  11. First, I would like to thank those who provided answers to the many MS Fram questions about our trip to Antarctica in November/December 2022. We followed any threads on the General and Roll Call boards to gather information. As noted, there is not a lot of activity on the Roll Call boards for Hurtigruten and as we are preparing for a second cruise with them in July 2023 we are hoping for any tips for a trip to Greenland. I have posted on the roll call boards already and hope to get more information from the general Hurtigruten board for anyone's insight who have taken this cruise in the past. "We are Mike and Linda from Wedowee, Alabama, U.S. and have just booked this cruise on the MS Fridtjof Nansen. It will be our second Hurtigruten Expedition cruise. We have never been to Greenland and are looking forward to this new adventure! The Nansen may be twice the size of the Fram, but we are anxious to experience a new ship and meet our fellow travelers." Thanks in advance for any input you may have. Mike and Linda
  12. We were on MS Fram 11/26 - 12/18/22 In-depth Antarctica. We just booked Disco Bay, Greenland with round-trip from Reykjavik, Iceland. We got a 5% prior cruiser plus an additional 5% booking within 30 days of our last (and first) Hurtigruten cruise discounts, and booked during a sale! The Hurtigruten agent in Estonia was very helpful in securing discounts and transferring reservation to an agent we use is the U.S. Our Fram voyage was fabulous.
  13. Edhopper, We were on the Fram in December, so my reply may not be perfect for the Amundsen. The dress was casual all day and only a few people changed for dinner except to remove rain pants and parka. It was not chilly on the Fram except sometimes in the Explorer Lounge in the evenings and on deck (of course). During the day it was warm throughout the ship. Internet was included in the cruise fare. We had good to OK internet almost all the time. Sometimes it was slow, but we were both able to upload pictures and send them on facebook from a netbook, tablet and phone (if the number of pictures was not large). One day in Antarctica I was able to post 10 pictures at one time within 2 minutes on my phone. Another day it took 30 minutes using the netbook. Some folks got more agrevated than we did. Nothing was said about the sunscreen that I recall. The biggest biosecurity was our boots being cleaned before and after each landing. They will issue boots for use and take the cleaning very seriously. We stepped through virkon disinfectant going onshore and upon returning to the ship. On some days we also had to go through the "guano-matic" that scrubbed the outside of the boots. We also needed to keep the tread on our boots clean between excursions using a large bent paperclip and/or brushes that are available. There is an issue with bird flu and they needed to keep foreign seeds and soil from contaminating the wildlife. I hope your cruise is as memorable as ours was. Safe travels, Mike and Linda
  14. We were on the MS Fram 11/27 - 12/18. The ship changed times two or three times back and forth during the cruise. It seemed odd since we did not dock at any ports with the exception of Stanley, Falkland Islands. It kind of kept us on our toes to be able to go on excursions with our group. We were divided into 6 groups for landings and/or cruising. Safe travels, Mike and Linda
  15. Deck has not been bad, crew keep them pretty clear and close them occasionally if too much ice. I have mostly worn trainers on board and husband wears Sketches slip on shoes with no problem. No self service laundry. ex. Jeans, pants 5 euro, t-shirt 3 euro. No one dresses up for meals, very casual. Breakfast and lunch are buffet, dinner is served most nights with an occasional buffet night. Wine at meals changes, but nice variety from worldwide at both lunch and dinner. Beer also at meals. Mix of guests from Australia, Europe, Canadians, Americans and a very few Asians. All announcements have been in English, then German, then French. Enjoy your cruise.
