  1. I have both a P&S and a better DSLR, Some of my favorite pictures have come from my point and shoot (even though I love my DSLR too).

DW has a nice Sony DSLR, but I shoot with a Panasonic Lumix 18x zoom FZ28 or 24x zoom FZ40 P&S that cost me less than $300! Her pictures are often better than mine, but I carry a lightweight camera that does not need different lenses. I am lazy :D!

Your pics are so nice, I would have guessed you had a much more expensive camera- it just goes to show that a good photgrapher doesn't always need an expensive set-up.

My daughter and I went to a local garden park a few weeks back; she used her iphone and I took my DSLR. It was hard to tell a difference in quality- hers came out beautifully.

  2. Hi all……WOW. I just want to say that all your photos are amazing. So many have taken my breath away. You have inspired me.

A few years ago, before our first Princess cruise, I wanted a digital camera. So, I bought myself a little Cannon Power Shot A530, 5 mega pixels, 4X zoom.

So, off I went with a smile on my face because I was convinced I was going to take some amazing photos.

After we came home, I overheard my son tell one of his friends that most of my photos were random, nothing special.

I was quite proud of some of them.

Then I came across this thread. I viewed your photos and tried to see what made your photos so special. I’m thinking it’s your fancy cameras. But I’m also seeing what you are taking your photos of; opportunity, imagination. You just happened to be at the right place at the right time to see that sunset, those birds, that cat’s yawn, that spider. I realized that you can’t just walk around; you have to look around for that special shot. And of course, be ready. So, on our next few trips, I was ready.

I have since bought myself a little Kodak, 12 mega pixels, 5X zoom. No viewfinder, which I hate, but I can keep it in my pocketbook for those unexpected shots.

And a Fuji Fine Pix, 14 mega pixels, 24X zoom. I bought it for the zoom. But it’s also a bigger camera.

I still have a lot to learn. I don't think I can ever compete with your pics,

but I’m having fun trying. And I really have to thank you all for opening my eyes.

    Teresa

  3. dang...Mr Bushbys looks grat! What beach is he on? & how easy is it to get to?

Mr. Busby's is at Dawn Beach.

I can't remember the exact drink prices but they were on par with most beach front bars- probably around $7 dollars. The burgers were quite pricy though. You can get them for considerably less at the Oyster Bay resort to the left.

  4. Absolutely stunning shots everyeone! I can't wait to get my hands on a D60 or a 7D, preferably a 7D. Not sure I'll have the patience for it though. ;)

A few shots from over the last year with my XSi ...

I really NEED to make myself get out more and shoot.

All your shots are great, but this one is really cool!

  5.

Just wanted to share our recent incident on the Sapphire Princess. I was taking my wife's photo inside the Solarium when a lady ask: "Would you like for me to take your picture together?" Not having very many photos together, I said: "Yes! thank you".

The lady took one shot then told us she wanted to take another shot. She moved location and while walking, she tripped on one of the lounge chairs and...dropped my camera. My camera is a Nikon D90 with an 18-105 lens. We all gasped after hearing the loud thud when the camera hit the solid wood deck floor. Other passengers looked shocked but didn't know what to do. The lady (never got her name) said: "I better leave you two alone...and hope to God your camera is ok". We subsequently discovered a few broken pieces after removing the lens. Regrettably, the camera stopped working. Fortunately, it was the second to the last day of the cruise. It was an accident...and we learned a valuable lesson. Don't let anyone borrow your camera, and if you really must...place the strap around their neck. Note: The last photo she took came out nice. :)

Wow! I'd be heartbroken. A girl asked my daughter to take her pic recently with her camera (just a point and shoot, but still) and my daughter accidently dropped it. They were both mortifed. Luckily, the camera was fine. I don't think I'd ever let anyone use my good camera- I hope you can get it fixed reasonably.

  6. The Blue Angels come to Seattle every year. I usually take movies!

Thanks for posting. I may try videos eventually too. We have a prime viewing spot right across from the Naval Academy and went every year to watch them. Last year, I had just purchased my camera and really didn't know how to get the best shots.

I was eager to try again this year. Something happened at the show right before Academy show and the pilots were sent back to Florida for more practice. Even worse, they won't be back next year due to a scheduling conflict and there are rumors they may stop altogether.

Here's some shots I took a year ago- not sure I'd be able to get close enough anywhere else- they flew right over us in Annapolis.

  7. Nice airshow pics MDSue. It's been 2 years since I've been to one. There's one coming this weekend in a neighboring city. Hopefully I can go there.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! Every year we go to see the Blue Angels perform at the Naval Academy and this year, they cancelled at the last minute. I was so disappointed.

We went to the Ocean City, MD airshow instead. The planes weren't as beutiful as the Angels, but I'm really glad I went. There were some really cool demonstrations.

  8. These are a few of my favorites from my latest Southern Caribbean cruise

  9. Hi Matt,

My wife and I are interested in having Princess buy back an original Behrens we paid $17k for in 2002. When I contacted Princess' Art Dept a few months ago, they told me the buy-back policy had been dropped a couple of years ago. Have you had success with your buy-back?

Thanks for shedding some light on this for us.

I attended an art auction on Princess last month and they did specifically mention their buy-back guarantees that they offered. However, when I listened to the explanation as to how it works I got the impression that they will take the artwork that you wish them to buy back and offer it for sale on future cruises. If it selld, then you will recieve the payment for it, minus their 15% premium they automatically charge on all sales.

While the art auction I attended sold many pieces of art that were reasonably priced lithos or gi-clees, I'm not aware of a single original or expensive piece that sold. Most of the art that sold was priced between $500- $1200 dollars.

While I originally thought I'd never by art online, I did find many pieces that I liked and ended up making a purchase. I believe Princess is able to offer good deals on the framed prints becuase of the sheer volume of art they move every week. A small art gallery cannot possibily draw in the amount of customers that a cruise line full of shop-happy customers onboard. I look in ozen of galleries on the ilsands we visited and hoped to buy an original painting from a local artist. When I didnt find anything I really wamted I recultantly decided to sit trough an art auction, I walked away believing that good deaks were avaikable. After mich comparision shopping

I feel I got a fair price for a print that I love and it will look beautiful hanging hanging in my room. The auctioneers on Princess seem to be a different breed from the PArk West varietys. There were no false promise of buyers making instant riches off their purchase.

I can't wait for mine to arrive. I stuck with a reasonably priced gi-clee. I'm satisfied with the price I paid. You won't find me buying ecpensive one-of-kind artowrk, but there is a nice selection onboard

  10. Great Pileated Woodpecker capture!

Thanks, I was so thrilled that this one stayed around for a long time while I was taking his (or her) picture. I'm hoping they will return. I saw babies on the same tree last year just as they were leaving the nest, but I couldn't get good shots. I'm hoping there will be another chance this year.

  11. My husband and I are planning our first cruise. We will be sailing to Alaska in August and couldn't be more excited.

I am fairly new to photography, but it has thoroughly hooked me. I have been using my 50mm alot lately because I have been doing a lot of indoor photography. Here is an image I took today...

I am looking forward to spending sometime on this board. Enjoy your evening.

Welcome Jen, My two favorite things in life are cruising and photography. You should have some great picture taking opportunities in Alaska!

  12. My sister bought a bottle of rum at the Bacardi factory. It was kept by the cruiseline for the duration of the cruise (Serenade of the Seas). It was an expensive bottle with a nice custom case, so she did not make any attempt to sneak it onboard. The only issue she had with them taking it for the cruise was they marked the collector case with a sharpie to identify it, which ruined the case.

I'm sure people have been successful at sneaking liqour onboard, but I just wanted to mention that it is not allowed and they will take it if they find it. (On the other hand, they could care less about soda- have walked onboard every cruise with it).

  13. We have a problem too. My son purchased a ring in St. Kitts Milano's on Dec 2, 2010. Yes last month! He gave it to his Girlfriend on New years eve and now they are engaged. The problem is on Sunday Jan, 2 a diamond fell out and we can not find it. I can not find a number to the store in St Kitts does anyone know the number? I hope there was some kind of guarantee. The diamond must have already been loose.

I'm really sorry about the lost stone- I suspect there will be no recourse but you should certainly try. Does your son have homeowners insurance that might cover the loss? It is relatively cheap to insure jewelry so I make sure I have it for my pieces that are worth more than a few hundred dollars

Keep searching! My engagement ring fell off my nightstand years ago and landed in a trash can. The trash had been thrown out and was at the curb for pick up when I decided to check the bag. I brought inside right before the truck came around. Luckily, after a tedious search, the ring turned up. I hope the diamond will re-surface for your son and future daughter-in-law.

  14. I'm not sure if Hanno is back. I read a few months ago that he was working in the US for a few months. We toured with him twice and he does a great job. We liked him so much the first time, that we requested him again on our second visit. I know the Victor work diligently to provide is customers with a great day. If you don't get one of the well-known guides, I'm confident he we choose a great person for you.
