  1. One thing we didn’t like on Royal was they reserved many seats in venues or Promenade for extra fee champagne packages. Pool area and some of the promenade were free options. You already pay a premium for a NYE voyage so thought it was just gouging people. Neither one of us likes champagne so we didn’t see the need to buy one of the “limited” packages. We had a good laugh when we walked into 270 on the Anthem and one of the waiters said to sit anywhere if you didn’t reserve space and all we saw were reserved signs everywhere.

Would recommend you buy a package if there is a venues theme that you really like so you don’t miss out. We had previously been on NYE sailings with Carnival and NCL and all venues were first come first served so we didn’t expect many seats would be sold in venues. The amount they sold seemed to be limited to what they can sell.

  2. One thing we thought ridiculous is that it was an extra $5 for a baked potato with the dining package. Most lines let you choose from most of the main menu in their steakhouse with their dining packages, so we were pretty surprised that they would charge extra for a baked potato on top of having a much smaller menu.

  3. I was just reading the fine print of the email and it indicates “the FCC is based upon the cruise  fare paid for this voyage”.

I understand our deposit will be refunded, but does this mean we would just get 25% of our deposit amount paid as a FCC or would the FCC still be based on the full cruise fare w/o fees/taxes?

  4. Thanks for posting!

I didn’t see it in my account either, but wanted to check rates on our 6 day Mardi Gras out of NY anyway. I was surprised To see that both NY voyages are now missing. Both seemed to have plenty of cabins last week so don’t expect they are sold out.

Our reservation is still showing in my cruise manager. Maybe they want to exclude these particular cruises from the current promotion and just hid them.

  5. Thanks for the review and hope you are feeling better!

We were on the following trip and the germs were still alive and well. The whole ship was coughing away from day 1. We were shocked at how few people were using the sanitizers/washing stations going into the Marketplace and no MSC staff were proactively spraying despite all the coughing.

We survived until late in the trip and had to both visit the doctor for the same nasty infection once home.

  6. They also don’t provide you with departure times for shorter tours which I have never seen on other mass-market lines. Makes it more difficult to plan your day in advance so that 20% pre-cruise discount isn’t necessarily free.

The PM function doesn't work 🙄

9am I believe. Are you embarking? Would love to hear how the process goes as it's a new embarking port for MSC.

Not until the 18th. Was just hoping to check the NY harbor cams if I had a few minutes when it was due to sail in. Thanks for the info.

We were on the Seaside last Nov 10,2018 and only received 1 meal each, which was 2 meals per cabin even though we are both Black Card. Previously on the Divina we both received 2 meals each. They have reduced that from 2/BC to 1/BC.

I thought MSC changed it officially to one Black card meal per cabin even if there are two Black card members in the cabin? I know we only received one on the Seaside last year even after complaining onboard we should be entitled to two. Maybe this is another situation where it is interpreted differently by ship/staff member.

Maybe I am confusing it with NCL that only gives 1 platinum meal even if two platinum members are in the cabin.

  9. NCL charges a 20% gratuity on the full drink package price when you select their “free” drink package as a perk. Currently their drink package is $100 day and doesn’t include bottled water. We travel on NCL quite a bit and we are used to this extra charge needing to be included.

MSC charging $27 a day upcharge on an included Easy package seems like them just following the crowd to bulk up profits. I was reading that Celebrity is also thinking about adding a mandatory gratuity amount when you get the “free” perk of a drink package.

Waiting to see if the NYC rumors prove true that they can only serve beer/wine while in NYC. I will be asking for a $27 pp credit that day since I am not paying for a premium upgrade if that is all they are serving 😎

FF ... they don't serve drinks other than the included cocktails or specific wine that I think they may offer with the dinner in the Cirque venue, regardless of what cabin category you're in or drinks package you have.  Here's the dinner menu that's offered:

    Thanks Bea!

Do you know if the menu is the same for both shows?

Seems that they have improved the selection on the Easy package. A new menu posted on social media shows an increase in the number of cocktails available under Easy. They probably had a lot of complaints about the limited choice yet the price was only 10 or 20 cents more for a preferred brand which did not make sense.

See the difference in these photos. The first one I took in Feb on the Meraviglia, the second was posted recently on social media although I notice my menu is in Euros and the second one is in Dollars it appears .

Thanks for this. Very interesting. We had already upgraded to premium due to the minimal Easy menu. We could easily live with this new menu and save the cash. They better be prepared for some unhappy campers if they will not refund the upgrade amount if this menu is the new standard.

There are very few 2-tops in the MDRs and are reserved for those celebrating milestone anniversaries/birthdays and those with special needs.  Black Card members are given priority for the remainder by the m'D, who you need to see on embarkation at the designated time to make a request for one.

Some 2-tops are very close to other tables - which kinda defeats the purpose lol.

    Hi Bea,

are there any more 2 tops in the Meraviglia anytime dining room compared to the traditional dining rooms?

    Thanks!

  13. Yes, they were sold at Headliners and they were $209 each. There was a staff member right when you walked in that you got a ticket count number for each pass you wanted to buy and then brought them over to a cashier who reminded you of the new price.

i didn’t take a picture of the lunch menu, but it was the same Haven lunch menu we have ordered on the Breakaway courtyard in the past with burgers/sandwiches . It isn’t the Haven dining room lunch menu.

You will I’ll need to ask previous Vibe purchasers if this was included in the past since this was our first time in Vibe. I don’t believe it was a previous inclusion since I never remember

reading about it as a perk prior to the price increase.

This was part of my longer review from my 5/12 Escape Sailing to Bermuda I just posted. I though it deserved it's own thread as I know the Vibe passes are a popular discussion.

19th deck bar: I found this little hidden Gem. Never crowded when I went and ended going there a few times to catch up on the PGA. This is the bar which is right to the right before you enter the Vibe. The Vibe Bartenders service this bar. I got to speaking to one of the Vibe’s bartenders, her name was Febry. Great personality. She gave me a tour of the Vibe and told me to comeback tomorrow and she would let me spend the day there. I did not however because we were in Bermuda and spent most of the day off the ship. She did mention to me that they have not sold out of the Vibe passes since they raised the prices (I think about a month and ½ ago).

    Thanks for posting this!

We were on the May 5 voyage and bought Vibe passes for the 1st time. The staff told us only about 25 passes were bought for the previous week and only 44 for our week.  Whether this low count is due to the increased price or just due to people expecting lower temps traveling to Bermuda is anyone’s guess. Many people speculated that it would once again quickly sell out for the summer sailings.

The staff as you indicated were exceptional. Febrie, Carla and July provided great service all week. We didn’t realize that they had coffee/pastry in the morning and you could also order lunch from the Haven courtyard sandwich menu. They also brought around little sandwiches, fruit skewers and cookies throughout the day.

Would have preferred the lower price, but we still felt we got our money’s worth. We have done a Haven room before and always thought the Haven sundeck was subpar without a bar.

  15. Thanks Captain-John for all the info and everyone else’s additions!

i know that you were in the YC, but did you notice in the dailies what were the fixed dining times in the main restaurant? We booked an Aurea cabin for one of the Canada trips out of NYC so we have anytime dining. It looks like we can save a lot of money downgrading to a Bella or Fantastica cabin, but you then need to select a fixed time.

With the downgraded Aurea drink package, no other Aurea perks interest us enough to pay the substantial price difference for just anytime dining.

    Thanks!

  16. So it appears only the Excel suites will have access to the loft 19 with the exception of anyone buying cabanas in that area if Excel passengers don’t buy them. I know that MSC had Cabanas in their suite area but the cabanas weren’t available for purchase by anyone not in the Yacht club accommodations, but Carnival wants to ensure they are always filled.

As described, it appears that only the highest level Excel suite would also have access to the Havana area. There is no mention of Excel or non-Excel suites having access to the Havana Area so there would appear to be roughly 150 suites that don’t have a perk of a separate sun deck area.

  17. It was a very interesting track and I enjoyed it since it was very unique for ship tracks. Really enjoyed the hill which was nice since there were no chaises to sidestep there. Wind wasn’t too bad on sea days, but some areas are more exposed than others. It is tight heading towards the rooftop garden and not especially safe cutting through the garden since staff were around the area and sometimes chairs blocked it a bit.

overall liked it since there was a little less tourist traffic with the way they designed it compared to other ships. Have a great trip!

  18. She was only on the Edge inaugural western cruise 1 day. She said a few words before the deck party and saw her walking around with the Captain. There were rumors of a QA, but not sure if it ever happened. Maybe we had an unreasonable expectation. We expected many more events and her being around for most of the week, but I guess she met her requirement since she did cruise for a day on the same ship.
