  1. Thanks for the replies! Sounds like Blue Lagoon is out. I forgot to mention that my 9 year old wants to be a cruise ship designer. :) Do you think the Doubletree view would be a thrill for him? Also, as long as there’s one decent casual restaurant option nearby, we are good with that. We will not have much time for shopping, etc.., Looks like pricing for Hampton Brickell and Doubletree are similar for that night if that makes any difference...
  2. Hi! My family of 4 including two kids will be traveling with my parents and adult brother to take a cruise out of Miami this April. I have narrowed it down to several hotels I have read good things about and would love your thoughts on which you would choose. 1) Hampton Inn Brickell 2) Doubletree Biscayne Bay (I love the waterfront location of this hotel, but have read some bad reviews, mostly of people who were switched to the "condo" section rather than the hotel. Is this a widespread issue?) 3) Hampton Inn Blue Lagoon Our top priorities would be a good pool for the kids, a safe neighborhood, and clean, nice rooms. We will likely not arrive until later afternoon/early evening the night before the cruise, so won't be doing a whole lot of sightseeing, etc... Thanks!
  3. Thank you for the helpful information. So am I understanding correctly that there are two options for soda packages... either $8/day per person, which I assume is unlimited and includes tip? or the $50 "gift card" type options where you pay $25 in advance and then swipe it each time you get a soda?
  4. Thank you for the information! Do you know if I would qualify for the $25 for $50 of soda discount deal if I buy it as a gift?
  5. My parents are taking a Holland America cruise this fall. My dad is very frugal, so although he loves soda, he never treats himself to the soda package. I thought it might be fun to give this to him as a birthday gift. First off, what is the current cost of the soda package? Also, what would the best way be for me to pay for this? Is there such a thing as a Holland America gift card that they could use to purchase it onboard, or is there a way for me to pay for it in advance? Thank you!
  6. Hi! Do you have suggestions for resources for last minute (2-3 weeks out) cruises that offer discounts? Is it best just to use the cruise line sites or are there better options? Thanks!
  7. We are slightly considering booking the first sailing after the current drydock (April 7) on the Navigator due to good pricing for the type of room we are looking for. I know some people are hesitant to book the first sailing after significant work is done for a number of reasons. What is your opinion? Would you do it? Also, other than adding all of the waterslides, etc... what other changes will be made? I've read some not some favorable reviews about the condition of the ship and staterooms prior to the drydock and was curious as to whether you anticipate these things to be improved after the current work. General opinions about the ship would be welcomed as well! Thanks!
  8. Thanks so much! That’s great information. It sounds like the ships are quite similar to you other than size and the extra pool? Quick question... was Grease appropriate for elementary aged kids? I know some parts of the movie are a bit questionable for younger ones and I wondered if they modified that on the cruise to make it more family friendly. 😊
  9. They are 9 and 12. Good to know that the port area is safe. On a shorter cruise, I don’t love the idea of only one port that we actually get off at, so it’s good to know that we could get off in Falmouth and not feel rattled around the port. Is it mainly just shopping and dining in the port?
  10. Thank you! Did you feel safe in the port area in Falmouth? I’ve heard even there the atmosphere is on the aggressive side in terms of vendors. Was that your experience?
  11. It is very interesting to hear that most people prefer the Independence. I completely get the 5 day vs 4 day issue, but interesting that it sounds like the Indy is more liked by those posting in general. I read tons of reviews on CC and Mariner seemed to be more highly regarded as a ship based on those reviews. Some of the reviews on the Independence mentioned very dated staterooms and some general disrepair and lack of cleanliness on the ship... did those sailing recently feel differently? We are newbies in terms of the ship options and this all feels pretty overwhelming!! Thank you!
  12. Thank you! Would you mind telling me what things on the Independence make you prefer the larger ship?
  13. Good suggestion! I would love to hear what things you prefer about the Voyager class if you don’t mind?
  14. Thanks for the information! Was the road to Dunn’s River Falls a rocky or bumpy one? When I went years ago, I remember it being really rough. Hopefully there have been improvements since then?
  15. Thanks! Yes, this April. We are aware the water park will not be open until May... do you think there will be significant construction issues that would impact April cruisers? Also, approximately what is the cost of the zip line and coaster on Labadee? Thanks!
  16. After much deliberation and consideration of various cruise lines, we have decided to broaden our horizons from DCL and take the leap and take a RCCI cruise. :) Thanks to all of the great tips on this board, we have narrowed it down to two options. 1) 4 day on the Mariner (April) to Nassau and CoCo Cay. We have been to Nassau several times on other cruises and are not huge fans. We did the dolphin excursion at Blue Lagoon on our last DCL cruise, so would be looking for another beach type excursion to take if we returned there. (Not wanting to fork over the big bucks for Atlantis water park though! :) Concerned about the number of times CoCo Cay is missed.... however, the dock SHOULD be done in March, so hoping we would be ok... We LOVE Castaway Cay with DCL, so curious as to whether Labadee or CoCo would be more similar to this laid back, gorgeous beach feel. I have heard that there are much more aggressive vendors in Labadee, which wouldn't be super appealing to us. :) 2) 5 on the Independence (April) to Labadee and Falmouth. I have heard mostly negative about Falmouth and Jamaica ports in general. Years ago, my husband and I did Dunn's River Falls and enjoyed it, but I think that is a 45-60 minute ride from Falmouth and I don't think my kids would love that. Are there other good options for excursions at that port? Any opinions on these two options (based on ship itself, or itinerary) would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
  17. Yep, I was newly feeling things out regarding Princess as a line at that point and now I have an actual itinerary and ship picked out, so looking for more specific info on those factors before making our final decision.
  18. Thank you for the comments... what types of activities do you enjoy doing with your son at those ports? Are the pools busy or is he able to use them as he wishes. Are there any shows that he enjoys?
  19. Looking for some thoughts on the 4 day Pacific Coastal on the Oosterdam from San Diego to Vancouver with a stop in Victoria. My husband and I are looking for a quick getaway and this looked like a fun and different option. If you have done this itinerary, could you share your thoughts? What did you do in Victoria? Did you plan activities in Vancouver when you finished the cruise or San Diego prior to the cruise? Thanks!
  20. It would be a 7 day to Princess Cays, St. Thomas, St. Maarten. The length of the cruse is what makes me worry that there wouldn't be enough to keep the kids busy since they are not fans of kids clubs... They do love nature, though, so wondering if there might be some fun, brief activities in the clubs that they would enjoy since they are based on "Discovery."
  21. We sailed on the Emerald Princess years ago without kids. We are now considering a trip on the Regal Princess with our 9 and 12 year olds. How would you compare these two ships? Are there adequate pools for kids on the Regal? Is there a list somewhere of the activities that the ship offers each day for kids? Trying do decide if we should go for it (the price is right! :) or try Royal Caribbean, which I have heard is Kid Friendly. However, I want to avoid the Party Boat feel, and am guessing Princess would be a "nicer" experience as long as the kids can find enough to do. :) Thanks!
  22. We are beginning to look at options for a cruise for our family including our 12 and 9 year old kids. My husband and I sailed RCI once 10 years ago, but have sailed with our kids on DCL since then so feel like we are newbies to the line again! Now that the kids are no longer into the Disney characters, etc... we are ready to branch out and try something new! :) We would like to do a somewhat shorter itinerary for this time.... probably 4-6 days if possible. The kids do not use the kids' clubs, so that is not a factor for us. We love doing fun things onboard as a family but also like quiet relaxation and sitting on our veranda, as well as swimming in pools and using waterslides if available. My kids always love the activities on DCL like making a car out of veggies and racing it and animation classes. We don't need tons of bells and whistles in terms of being on the biggest, most elaborate ship, and prefer to have a more low key vibe vs wild and loud all the time. We would love to have plenty of options for onboard activities for the kids, but don't need a million of them. Great service, good food, and a clean ship are top priorities for me. In terms of ports, I love ports that are "easy" and that have options without booking excursions everywhere and that feel safe when walking around with kids. I know many on this board have a ton of experience with the ships and itineraries, so I wondered if you might be willing to share your suggestions given what we are looking for. Thanks so much!
  23. Thanks to all for the great comments. It gives me some idea of the options for the kids should we choose to try Princess. Does anyone know if there is a list of the activities/classes offered for kids online? I checked past Patters and only saw adult options. I know on DCL there is a list of what activities are happening in the clubs and around the ship and their times. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
  24. Hi! We are currently looking into a cruise for our family including a 12 and 9 year old. We have cruised Disney twice and loved it. There are some great itineraries on Princess that interest us. Do you think Princess would be a good fit for the ages of our children? I wondered if the movies, dining and activities would be aimed at adults rather than children? They are not fans of the kids clubs, so wouldn't likely utilize those. Also, we have only done shorter sailings... do you think there would be enough to keep the kids busy for a 7 day cruise? (They do like just relaxing and arent kids that have to be on the go every moment.) Thanks so much!
